Amit Shah Calls CMs As Rains Batter Northeast; IAF Deployed For Rescue Ops

Heavy rain in the Northeast has caused severe flooding, disrupting normal life. The IAF rescued 14 people in Arunachal Pradesh. Assam CM Himanta Sarma issued flood alerts.
As heavy rain continues to pound the Northeastern region of the country, it has thrown normal life out of gear. Several areas continue to remain inundated on Sunday.
Earlier in the day, the Indian Air Force (IAF) was roped to assist in the rescue operation of people stranded amid floodwaters.
On Sunday morning, a critical humanitarian assistance and disaster relief mission was launched by the IAF in response to a request received from Assam and Arunachal Pradesh administrations. As many as 14 people who were stranded in the middle of flooded Bomjir river in the Lower Dibang Valley of Arunachal Pradesh (cut off from main land) were safely rescued to a safer place. The rescue operation was undertaken by Mi 17 helicopter.
Amit Shah Dials CMs, Assures Help
Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah dialed chief ministers of several northeastern states and assured them of all possible help in time of distress.
Taking to X, Shah wrote, 'Spoke with the Chief Ministers of Assam, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh and Governor of Manipur in the wake of ongoing heavy rainfall in their states. Also assured them of every possible help to tackle any situation. The Modi government stands like a rock in support of the people of the Northeast. (sic)."
Assam CM Issues Advisory Amid Rain Fury
Further, in the wake of rain havoc, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday advised people residing in riverside and low-lying areas to remain alert in view of incessant rain in the state and neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh.
Taking to X, Sarma issued the flood alert and said heavy rainfall has been recorded in Arunachal Pradesh's Kibitoo (17 cm), Hayuliang (15 cm) and Kalaktang (10 cm), which may cause a sharp rise in river levels downstream.
'Assam is already witnessing intense rain in Silchar (42 cm), Karimganj (35 cm), Hailakandi (30 cm) and in nearby areas. People in low-lying and riverbank areas are advised to stay alert and follow local advisories. Stay safe, stay prepared," Sarma further wrote.
Heavy downpour over the past few days has led to flash floods and landslides across several Northeastern states, triggering widespread destruction. So far, the rain fairy has claimed at least 30 lives in Northeast.
The downpour has severely affected road connectivity and infrastructure, damaged homes, and disrupted power supply, leaving thousands in distress.

North East rains: Assam's Silchar breaks 132-year rainfall record, 3,365 houses damaged in Manipur
The Silchar district in Assam recorded 415.8 mm of rain over a 24-hour period on Sunday, marking the highest single-day rainfall since 1893, NDTV reported. Rainfall in Silchar, the second-largest city of Assam, on Sunday shattered a 132-year-old record, surpassing the previous single-day high of 290.3 mm with 415.8 mm of rain. The flood situation in the rest of the state remains critical, with forecasts predicting more heavy rain on Monday, PTI reported. Meanwhile, heavy rains continue to batter other parts of the North East as well. In Manipur, more than 19,000 residents have been hit by floods after four consecutive days of downpour, PTI reported. The situation on the ground has been grim. Since May 30, at least nine have died in landslides triggered by relentless rain.
