BUENOS AIRES - A new trial into the death of Argentinian football hero Diego Maradona is to be held outside Buenos Aires, German Press Agency (dpa) reported.
Media reports on Thursday said the seventh criminal court in San Isidro, near the Argentinian capital, was chosen by lot to carry out the trial following a scandal involving a previous judge.
Seven medical professionals are on trial for the possible involuntary manslaughter of the legendary footballer in 2020.
Judges Roberto Gaig, Alejandro Lago and Alberto Ortolani are to conduct the new trial.
The first trial was declared null and void in late May after around two and a half months because the judge involved, Julieta Makintach, had simultaneously worked on an unauthorised documentary about the trial.
She has since been suspended from office and is awaiting separate impeachment proceedings.
It remains to be seen when the new main proceedings will begin.
Although a new trial date could theoretically be set soon, judicial circles are increasingly expecting a postponement to 2026.
Reasons given include a busy schedule and expected delaying tactics by the defence lawyers.
Maradona died of heart failure in November 2020 at the age of 60, a few weeks after an operation for a blood clot in his brain.
The public prosecutor's office accuses the medical staff of gross negligence in their care. - BERNAMA

Philippine Navy seizes US$175mil meth haul at sea

A pair of naval gunboats intercepted a fishing vessel carrying 1.5 tonnes of methamphetamine hydrochloride off the coast of main island Luzon just before dawn, Commodore Edward de Sagon told a news conference. Four people, including one foreigner, were arrested in the joint operation with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, according to de Sagon. "We still don't have the details of where (the drugs originated)," he said, saying they believed the haul had been transferred from a larger vessel to the fishing ship. "That was when it was intercepted. There was information and (manoeuvres) that made us suspicious," de Sagon said. Navy spokesman John Percie Alcos said it was "one of the largest illegal drug apprehensions in the history of the Philippine Navy". Meth, known locally as shabu, is the most prevalent illegal drug in the Philippines. Friday's haul follows the seizure of nearly 1.3 tonnes of meth valued at about $152 million in recent weeks, according to the presidential palace. "The illegal drugs were turned over by fishermen who found them in sealed packages left floating in waters off Zambales, Pangasinan, Ilocos Sur, Ilocos Norte, and Cagayan (northern provinces)," the palace said in a statement. The Philippines' biggest-ever drug seizure came in April last year when more than two tonnes of meth was seized at a police checkpoint on a road in Batangas province south of the capital, according to the presidential palace. - AFP

NBA great Vlade Divac injured in Montenegro motorcycle crash

BELGRADE: Former basketball star and LA Lakers centre Vlade Divac is recovering today after breaking his hip in a motorcycle accident in Montenegro, hospital staff told AFP. The 57-year-old was injured late Thursday after falling from his motorcycle near the coast, said hospital spokeswoman Ljubica Mitrovic. "Divac was immediately brought to the hospital in Risan, where doctors conducted thorough examinations," she said, referring to a town about 47 kilometres (29 miles) west of the capital Podgorica. "Unfortunately, it was confirmed that he had suffered a hip fracture. Surgery was performed." Divac is in a stable condition at the hospital. Drafted into the NBA in 1989 by the Los Angeles Lakers, the towering centre became one of the first European players to make an impact in the league. He played seven seasons for the Lakers before moving on to the Charlotte Hornets then the Sacramento Kings, and eventually finishing his NBA career back with the Lakers. Mentored by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson, he quickly adapted to the NBA and became the first player born and trained outside the United States to play more than 1,000 games in the league. A silver medallist in Olympic basketball with both Yugoslavia and later Serbia, he was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2019 and the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2010. He played 117 games for the national team of Yugoslavia and later Serbia and Montenegro, winning World Championship titles in 1990 and 2002, and was also crowned European champion in 1989, 1991, and 1995. The hospital has asked the public and media to respect Divac's privacy during his recovery. - AFP

Sri Lanka deports dozens of Chinese cybercrime suspects

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka deported 85 Chinese nationals today, months after they were detained on suspicion of carrying out cybercrimes against banks. The suspects were expelled for violating the terms of their tourist visas and fined around US$250 each. "They were arrested by police in October over allegations that they were carrying out online scams targeting international banks," a senior immigration official, told AFP. He said the group, including 13 women, was flown to the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou on a chartered SriLankan Airlines flight this morning accompanied by Sri Lankan police and Chinese security escorts. Meanwhile, Sri Lankan police said a court in the central Kandy district ordered the electronic devices seized from the group to be handed to Chinese authorities. Those deported were among around 230 Chinese men and women detained in October on cybercrime allegations, with the remainder awaiting legal proceedings. The Chinese embassy said at the time that Beijing's crackdown on cybercriminals at home may have pushed some to go abroad. Last year, police arrested another 200 suspects, mainly Indians, who were also accused of operating online financial scams.
