Euro 2025 a 'fresh start' for youthful England, says James
The Women's Euro 2025 campaign will be more like a fresh start than a title defence for England with the team full of young players looking to prove themselves on the big sage, forward Lauren James said.
James, who made her senior international debut just over a month after England won the European title in 2022, has recovered from the hamstring injury which sidelined her since April in time for next month's continental campaign.
"A fresh start, a bit like a new era ... hungry girls wanting to do well," the 23-year-old told The Guardian.
'It's not really about defending a title because it's a completely different team. This team's got a lot of youth in it and this will be some people's first big tournament," added James, who has scored seven goals in 27 appearances for England.
England begin their Group D campaign against France on July 5, followed by games against Netherlands and Wales.
The tournament runs from July 2-27. REUTERS

PLEASE CONTACT YOUR ACCOUNT REPRESENTATIVE FOR FURTHER DETAILS../File Photo REUTERS Leicester City have parted ways with manager Ruud van Nistelrooy by mutual agreement after the team were relegated from the Premier League last season, the club said on Friday. Former Manchester United and Real Madrid striker Van Nistelrooy joined Leicester in November with the side struggling in 16th place in the table. They ended the campaign in 18th. The 48-year-old won his first match in charge but was unable to turn Leicester's season around, winning only five matches during his tenure as they finished 13 points from safety and returned to the Championship. "Ruud has overseen a challenging period for the club," Leicester said in a statement. "(He) moves on with the respect and thanks of everyone at the football club for his dedication and hard work, and with our very best wishes for the future." Regarded as one of the Premier League's best strikers ever, Van Nistelrooy previously led PSV Eindhoven to the Dutch Cup as manager before joining compatriot Erik Ten Hag's United staff as an assistant coach. He served as interim coach at Old Trafford after Ten Hag was fired, until new manager Ruben Amorim took charge. 'I would like to personally thank the Leicester City players, coaches, academy and all the staff I have worked with for their professionalism and dedication during my time at the club," Van Nistelrooy said in a statement. The first-team coaching staff will oversee the start of pre-season until a new manager is appointed, Leicester added. ‘No more repeat matchups!' Tennis fans post wishlists ahead of Wimbledon 2025 draw
Photo: Freepik Fans are expecting the main draw results for Wimbledon 2025 to be revealed on June 27. In a Reddit post, one tennis fan started a discussion and asked, 'What is your personal wish list for the draw?' The Redditor added, 'Could be matchups that you really want to see… Or just easy draws for your favourites/hard ones for your unfavourites lol' Other tennis fans shared their answers in the comments section. One wrote that she expects to see more diverse matchups, commenting, 'Just give us different matchups. I don't want to see Alcaraz playing the likes of Tommy Paul or Musetti, Sinner with Medvedev/Shelton, or Zverev with Griekspoor or Fritz (I like seeing him lose, but tennis-wise I've had enough).' 'Same with Zheng and Sabalenka for the women,' one fan wrote. Many agreed with the fan, and another Redditor echoed the sentiment, saying: 'We need WAY more variety!!!' Another added, 'I'd like Dan Evans to get a winnable first-round match as I feel like this might be his last Wimbledon. I also agree with others that I'd like to see different match-ups rather than the same old.' 'I'd like to see a strong test for Raducanu straight away. Her fitness is still a big question mark, but she's proven capable of consistently performing at a top 50 level. I'd rather see whether she can bring out her best against the best on centre court than her draw open up and achieve a good result that way,' another tennis fan admitted. Several users shared specific hopes for the upcoming draw, expressing a desire to see certain players kept apart. Some mentioned wanting top seeds like Djokovic, Sinner, and Alcaraz placed on opposite sides, while others hoped to avoid emotionally draining matchups, such as Paolini facing Vekic again. A few also wished for gentler early rounds for players like Naomi Osaka and hoped that the favourites would avoid tricky early opponents. The possible matchups of each participating athlete will depend on their seedings. As in other tennis tournaments, the top two seeds can only face off in the final round of Wimbledon. The third and fourth seeds may be positioned in either the upper or lower half of the bracket. Seeding is used in tennis to arrange the highest-ranked players within the tournament bracket to ensure they do not compete against one another in the initial rounds of the event. Lion Pollock handed chance to make number eight his own in Perth
SYDNEY :Henry Pollock's rise in the rugby world has been nothing short of meteoric and on Saturday he gets a chance to make another mighty leap in a red British & Irish Lions number eight shirt against Western Force in Perth. The explosive 20-year-old has gone from England under-20s representative, to full international and then Lion in little more than five months and made his debut for the tourists in the loss to Argentina in Dublin last week. Number eight is traditionally the province of the biggest and brawniest man on the pitch, but Pollock has been given licence by Lions coach Andy Farrell to make it his own. "He knows what we want from our eights, but he's got to find his own version of that, as that's what we want, him being himself," Farrell said after naming his team on Thursday. "His point of difference is his ability to see things quickly and act upon that and his line running, for example, is pretty good. "His awareness of space and how sharp he is in his mind and his athletic abilities are up there with the other lads in the squad." After setting the rugby world alight with a brilliant display in his normal openside flanker role as his club Northampton beat Leinster in the Champions Cup semi-finals last month, Pollock was named number eight for the final. It did not go as well as he hoped with the Saints losing 28-20 to Bordeaux Begles but Farrell said such experiences were all an important part of his development. "The final was perfect for him as at the top end of club level, and international level, and the top end of British & Irish Lions matches, they're all experiences that you'd hope to get," he added. "He's had one of those where it all didn't go his team's way. He's got to find a way within that. That's going to happen on a tour like this." By contrast with the 2013 Lions tour of Australia, which Warren Gatland won with what local media described as "large slabs of meat", Farrell is more blessed with athleticism than size in his loose forwards. Injury robbed him of Ireland captain Caelan Doris, who fits the more traditional mould, and Ben Earle, the archetype of the smaller, more athletic eighth man, was at the back of the scrum for the Pumas match. Replacement Jack Conan gives Farrell another bigger man to turn to if he needs to against a Force team who have built a reputation for physicality under Simon Cron, the nephew of longtime All Blacks forwards coach Mike. Cron senior is now an assistant coach under Joe Schmidt at the Wallabies and he will no doubt be keeping a close eye on the balance of the Lions pack on Saturday. Western Australia, and the Force since 2006, have never provided that much opposition to the Lions, losing 44-0 in 1989, 116-10 in 2001 and 69-17 in 2013. Even with four players held back in Wallabies camp, however, the 2025 Force team is studded with internationals hoping to do enough to be in Schmidt's squad for the three tests in late July and early August.
