April 27 (Reuters) - London hopes to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, UK Sport, the Mayor of London and Athletic Ventures announced on Sunday ahead of the 45th running of the London Marathon.
A formal expression of interest will be submitted to World Athletics in September, with the bid contingent on securing 45 million pounds ($59.91 million) in government support.

A feasibility study projects a record-breaking economic and social impact of over 400 million pounds, UK Athletics, Mayor Sadiq Khan and Athletic Ventures said in a statement on Sunday.
Athletic Ventures is a joint venture between UK Athletics (UKA), Great Run Company and London Marathon Events.
London followed up on the 2012 Olympics by hosting a successful world championships in 2017, with sell-out crowds for all the evening sessions at the Olympic Stadium.
"London 2017 showed the world what this city and this country can do," said UKA President Denise Lewis, who was part of the team that secured the 2017 bid.
"It was an incredible example of how we can unite behind a vision — full stadiums, global energy, and a lasting impact. I know we can do it again in 2029."
Sunday's London Marathon provided the springboard for the announcement, with 56,000 runners expected to take part.
The bid for 2029 is part of a wider vision to redefine the delivery of major international events in the UK, said Lewis, the Olympic heptathlon gold medallist in 2000 in Sydney.
Birmingham in England has been selected to host the 2026 European Athletics Championships.

New £34m Man City hothead Rayan Cherki riled Man Utd fans with crude gesture and demanded to be sent back to youth team

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) RAYAN CHERKI has never been afraid of giving two fingers – and sometimes even more – to his haters on and off the pitch. Manchester City's new £34m midfielder is a maverick with a history of making headlines with his football and his attitude. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 6 Manchester City-bound Rayan Cherki is used to making headlines Credit: AFP On the surface, City's deal to sign the Lyon talent looks like a coup for one of the brightest young sparks in European football. But Pep Guardiola will be faced with the challenge of moulding Cherki's attitude as well as his game, with the Frenchman's reputation preceding him. Back in April, having scored in extra-time to give Lyon a second leg aggregate lead against Manchester United in the Europa League quarter finals, the Old Trafford fans gave the young Frenchman a right earful. The 21-year-old responded first by shaking his fist and then by grabbing his crotch with the wry smile of someone who embraces being the pantomime villain – no matter how crude. READ MORE ON FOOTBALL COULD DO WIRTZ Grealish lined up as Wirtz replacement and accepts Man City career is over It's that bold confidence that is one of Cherki's biggest strengths, making him ready to take the Premier League by storm, but others have suggested it is a weakness of the rising star. It's the first time Cherki has been involved in controversy either. 6 Cherki grabbed his crotch after scoring against Manchester United in the Europa League this season PAST ISSUES The Lyon academy graduate caused a stir when he demanded he was sent back to the youth team to protest being benched for a first team fixture. His strop, which even left his father questioning his behaviour, was another example of behaviour that has left managers questioning his mindset in the past. CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS Lyon bosses of old have repeatedly voiced concern over Cherki's attitude. Rudi Garcia, who was the first Lyon manager to give Cherki a shot in the first-team, previously warned: "We all tell him that he'll have the career he deserves, provided that he keeps working. Arsenal legend Thierry Henry's wild dancing after guiding France to Olympics 2024 final "The danger is making him believe he is already one of the world's best players." Peter Bosz didn't hold back in his assessment of Cherki when he was playing him less than most fans would have liked after replacing Garcia. He said: "I choose my players to win. If I think I can win with Rayan, he'll play. It not, it will be someone else". While Fabio Grosso, Lyon boss in 2023, bluntly called out Cherki during his time in France. He slammed: "He's not an exceptional player. He has enormous technical talent but needs to work on the rest." Cherki has always been highly rated in his home country of France, and he finally announced himself on the National team scene with a stunning debut volley during France's 5-4 Nations League semi-final loss to Spain last week. 6 Cherki scored a stunning volley on his senior France debut last week Credit: AFP A LONG-STANDING REPUTATION At club level, his talent has always been known. Described as one of Lyon's most talented ever academy products, at the age of 16 years and 102 days he made his senior debut in the Champions League in November 2019. Two months later, he scored two and assisted two in a 4-3 Coupe de France win over Nantes. Not even Kylian Mbappe had announced himself so emphatically, and Cherki did so while still a schoolboy. Such inexperience but also such flare, individuality and showmanship. He had outgrown the youth system, playing with the U17s aged 14, and described it as being 'too easy' for him. Lyon's former academy director Jean-Francois Vulliez said: 'Every day, every training session, he would be dribbling past opponents and wanting to score. It was just in his DNA. 'We still do not know if his best foot is his right or left. At seven, eight, nine, it was the same. He could always play with both.' Physically, he was ready for the biggest of stages, but psychologically, he was not, struggling mentally to comprehend the spotlight he was now constantly in. His mentality was questioned, as was his physique, with cruel trolls mocking his stockier build, likened to a young, raw Wayne Rooney. As a result, his form became patchy. Vulliez added: 'Everything happened so fast and at the age of 16 he did not know what professional football was. He was a kid. 'There were a lot of people who were trying to smash him, but the fans did not understand when he lost the ball many times during games. 'He was always respectful but he could be emotional. He did not understand when he had to go to the bench.' 6 6 Cherki has had a reputation as one of France's top young talents since he was a kid Credit: X 6 A young Cherki was criticised for his attitude at times Credit: EPA FINDING HIS FEET This season has been the year that Cherki's reputation has reached the rest of Europe - registering 32 goal contributions in 44 appearances for Lyon across all competitions. That's sparked a move to Guardiola's Man City, a switch to play under a hard-hitting boss with a reputation of getting the best out of his players. And if Cherki's glowing reviews about his ability are anything to go by, City have secured the services of a gem in their pursuit to replace Kevin de Bruyne. Thierry Henry, Cherki's former France U21 coach and Olympic manager, claimed he had never seen a player dribble at such speeds with both feet. He told L'Equipe: " For me, we're talking about a guy who should have been battling with the others, at the very top, for a long time to see who is the best. "He fell behind because it took him a while to understand... But now, he's understood.' Lyon team-mate Alex Lacazette has suggested that the negative noise around Cherki was wide of the mark and his ability is the only thing that matters. He said: "I wondered what was going on because I saw his talent and I heard a lot of things I didn't understand. "He's just a player who needs help, to be told what he should do most and perhaps do a little less". Speaking this week about his perceived flaws, Cherki said: 'People don't know me very well, otherwise I'd be criticised less. "When people really get to know me, more than a few are surprised.' Man City and Guardiola know what they are getting with Cherki: a maverick, an entertainer, a creator – but one that has finally found his place, and is finally accepted for who he really is.

Cap on bus fares to stay in place until 2027, Rachel Reeves announces

The £3 cap on bus fares in much of England will remain in place for the next two years, Chancellor Rachel Reeves has announced. Passengers around the country were facing a steep rise in the cost of a bus ride when the cap was due to come to an end later this year. But in a win for the Department of Transport, the scheme has been extended until March 2027. It will not apply to bus riders in either London or Greater Manchester, as transport in both cities is controlled under separate systems. The bus fare cap was set at £2 when the previous Conservative government introduced it in an effort to combat the cost-of-living crisis. It had been set to expire in December 2024, but Reeves instead increased it to £3 at her first Budget last October. A government source said: 'Buses provide lifeline access to opportunity for people across the country. 'Keeping fares affordable is a top priority for the Transport Secretary, as our landmark Buses Bill overhauls how services are delivered.' Sir Sadiq Khan's team is concerned the spending review spells bad news for transport in London. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander is expected to be among the big winners when Reeves unveils the detail of her review tomorrow afternoon, with some big investments already announced. The Chancellor pledged £15 billion investment to improve tram, train and bus connections in the North and Midlands last week, with the Greater Manchester, Liverpool, West Midlands and West Yorkshire transport networks in line to get around £2 billion each. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video But London City Hall is concerned after a lack of funding promises for major upgrades to the capital's transport, like the DLR and Bakerloo line extensions, which are on top of the TfL wishlist. A source close to mayor Sadiq Khan told Metro warned that this would be a 'missed opportunity for London' and that levelling up the country 'shouldn't level down London.' They said funding the Bakerloo line extension would help meet growth and housing targets and create 'thousands of new jobs.' The source said: 'Over the past nine years as Mayor, Sadiq has fought to deliver for London – in the best interests of Londoners and the whole country. 'We know that when London does well it means the whole country does well, and that it will simply not be possible to achieve national growth ambitions without the right investment and growth in our capital. 'We must not return to the damaging, anti-London approach of the last government, which would not only harm London's vital public services, but jobs and growth across the country.' They added: 'It's also important to recognise that parts of London still have some of the highest levels of poverty anywhere in the UK.' But the mayor's intervention has been met with derision by some in government. When announcing the increased investment in the north of England last week, Reeves said 'a Britain that is better off cannot rely on a handful of places forging ahead of the rest of the country'. It was described by Treasury as a 'long-overdue investment outside of London and the South East'. While there was no promise of government backing for the Bakerloo line extension, this doesn't mean that the project is not going ahead. The source said the next opportunity for government money will be the autumn budget. The extension from Elephant and Castle to Lewisham, which has been in the pipeline for more than a decade, is estimated to cost between £5 and £8 billion. Money for the mega project will come from TfL, the borough councils and developers – but a contribution from the government is needed before the plans will become a reality. If the proposal goes ahead as planned, there will be two new Tube stations – at Burgess Park and Old Kent Road – and new interchange stations in New Cross and Lewisham with links to the DLR, Overground and rail services. TfL will launch a new express bus service called the Bakerloop as the wait for the Tube line extension continues. Set to launch this autumn, the route BL1 will run along the same route as the extension between Waterloo and Lewisham, with only a limited number of stops to keep the journey time quick. The Docklands Light Railway extension is estimated to cost around £1 billion in 2022 prices, but it could rise to £1.7 billion, according to BBC News. Along with the two new stations at Beckton Riverside and Thamesmead, the plan would deliver up to 30,000 new homes and 10,000 jobs to boost growth, TfL said. More Trending TfL said it is working with partners to 'maximise local and regional funding.' 'We're also finding ways to reduce costs and create efficiencies, but Government support is needed because of the size of the project,' it said. A Treasury spokesperson told Metro: 'The success of the London transport network helps both the capital and the UK's economy, which is why during the Budget the Chancellor announced TfL would receive nearly £500 million in additional funding. 'This week's Spending Review will deliver economic growth for all parts of the country, driven by investment and focused on the priorities of working people, putting more money in their pockets.'
