Get ready to turn on the air conditioners: Region turns hot and hazy as mercury rises

Boston Globe2 days ago

The setup
Simply put, high pressure continues to dominate the region, calling for mostly sunny skies across most of the Northeast, including all of New England. The recent warming trend paired with the strengthening high pressure, now positioned to the south, will bring a surge of warmth across New England, making it feel like mid-summer for the next couple of days.
High pressure will keep the sun out across New England with a warm, southwesterly flow.

Temperatures will already be in the mid-60s as you head out for the day on Wednesday. With the sunrise just after 5 a.m., the surface will warm up in a hurry with Boston and parts of Southern New England likely to reach the 80-degree mark before noon. Most will settle in the mid-80s during the afternoon.
I wouldn't be surprised if a few spots touch 90 degrees west of I-95, especially with haze lurking in the atmosphere from Canadian wildfire smoke.

Highs on Wednesday will push well into the 80s across most of New England away from the coast.

You'll notice the hazy tint of the skies right out of the gate Wednesday morning. If you're up early, you might see an orange or red glow with the sunrise, especially across Central and Northern New England. Most of New England could catch a fiery red sunset, too.
Most of the wildfire smoke should stay suspended high in the atmosphere and avoid widespread air quality alerts, but some spots in southwestern New England and the higher elevations of the Green and White Mountains might see poor air quality with thicker smoke present. Folks with respiratory challenges might want to limit time spent outdoors tomorrow.
Wildfire smoke will push into New England Wednesday, with the thickest smoke across the north.

Dew points will also take a jump up on Wednesday, but will remain in the 50s with the air feeling a touch heavy but still comfortable.
Thursday brings heat, humidity, & thunderstorms
This is where things get interesting. The dome of high pressure begins to break down on Thursday but not before one final surge of warmth is drawn into New England, making the day a real contender to hit 90 across Boston. Areas between I-95 and I-91 in Springfield can reach the mid-90s Thursday afternoon.
A look at weather across Boston for the next seven days.

You'll notice the surge in humidity, too, as dew points climb to the mid-60s, making the air feel heavy and sticky.
Dew points will jump into the 60s starting Thursday, making the air feel sticky across Greater Boston.
Boston Globe
A weak cold front will also push into New England late in the day, which will call for thunderstorms to pop up across the frontal boundary as the air is hot and moist, or in other words, unstable. Most shower and thunderstorm activity will be across Central and Western New England with a marginal chance for a severe storm or two.

Canadian wildfire smoke is still affecting Wisconsin. How to keep kids and pets safe with poor air quality

Like much of the Midwest, Wisconsin's air quality is still seeing effects from Canadian wildfire smoke, with Milwaukee experiencing some of the worst air quality in the nation. In fact, Milwaukee had the worst air quality in the U.S. on June 4 with an air quality index of 153, The New York Times reported. While Chicago has since topped the Times' list, Milwaukee remains in second with an AQI of 136. This AQI is considered "unhealthy for sensitive groups," according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's standards. An air quality advisory from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources remains in effect until noon on June 5. The National Weather Service also said in a post on X that healthy residents should consider spending limited time outdoors. While wildfire smoke can negatively impact anyone, children and pets are some of the more vulnerable groups. As the poor air quality continues throughout the state, here's what experts recommend you should do to keep them safe: Wildfire smoke is a "complex mixture" of pollutants shown to cause a range of health effects, according to the EPA. These effects can be "relatively minor," like eye irritation, to more serious, including premature death, the agency says. Children are "especially vulnerable," since their lungs are still developing, the EPA says. Aside from physical health effects, the agency notes children may also experience stress and mental health problems from wildfires. More: Milwaukee has the worst air quality in the US right now, according to The New York Times Like humans, animals can be negatively impacted by poor air quality, says. Those with heart or lung disease and older pets are "especially at risk" and should be closely monitored when air quality is poor. Children aged 2 and older can wear masks and respirators, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. However, masks approved by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health aren't made to fit young children, the CDC says. So, you should choose a mask or respirator that fits your child comfortably. The agency also notes certain face coverings, like surgical masks or breathing through a wet cloth, will not protect kids. According to the CDC, there are several steps you should take prior to the risk of wildfire smoke inhalation, including: Stock up on medication if evacuation may be necessary. Buy groceries you won't have to cook. Talk to your child's healthcare provider, especially if they have a chronic health condition. Once wildfire smoke hits, here's how the CDC says you can keep protecting your kids: Check air quality reports. Check school closings. Limit time outdoors. Keep windows and doors closed. Use an HVAC system with air filter. Use a portable air filter, if available. Consider evacuating if your child is experiencing breathing problems or other symptoms from smoke inhalation that do not improve. Seek medical attention immediately if they are having trouble breathing, is "very sleepy" or will not eat and drink. You should have "high efficiency filters" before fire season starts and consider creating a "clean room" with a portable air cleaner, recommends. Here are some tips from for keeping your pets safe once wildfire smoke begins: Keep pets indoors as much as possible. Bring outdoor pets into rooms with good ventiliation. Keep indoor air clean by avoiding certain activities, like vacuuming or burning candles. Limit time outdoors and physical activity. Include pets in any evacuation planning, if necessary. If your animal is showing any of the following symptoms, recommends contacting your veterinarian: Coughing Gagging Red or watery eyes Nasal discharge, inflammation of throat or mouth Reluctant to eat hard foods Trouble breathing, includes open-mouth breathing and if they're making more noise when breathing Fast breathing Fatigue, weakness or disorientation Reduced appetite Reduced thirst The DNR has interactive air quality maps, which show the AQI and any active alerts or advisories by county. You can view them on the department's website. You can also sign up for air quality advisory notices through the DNR's website at More: Canadian wildfire smoke could affect Wisconsin all summer. ‘She's sold out': Meghan McCain accused of going ‘full grift' after promoting COVID vaccine ‘detox'

Meghan McCain, who once chastised rap superstar Nikki Minaj for spreading 'vaccine hesitancy' during the covid-19 pandemic, is now partnering with a fringe 'wellness' company to promote a 'detox' supplement for those who 'regret taking the shot.' The former host of The View hawking $90 bottles of the 'Ultimate Spike Detox' prompted critics to call out the daughter of John McCain for going 'full grift' and accuse her of selling out 'to the crazies' after championing herself as a 'voice of reason on the right' for years. McCain, who now hosts a twice-weekly podcast, took to X Wednesday to announce that she was 'thrilled to partner' with The Wellness Company, a business run by Canadian entrepreneur Foster Coulson that is 'rooted in conspiracy theories' and employs 'several doctors who have been accused of spreading medical misinformation.' Coulson, who has paid accused rapist and mysogynistic influencer Andrew Tate to sell his products, says he is creating a 'parallel economy' for 'consumers who believe their freedom is under threat by censorious elites and corrupt scientists.' Other ventures he has backed include a dating site for unvaccinated singles and an 'anti-woke' coffee brand. One of the doctors Coulson has employed is Dr. Peter McCullough, who is listed as The Wellness Company's 'chief scientific officer' and developed the 'Ultimate Spike Detox' supplement line. McCullough, who was an early proponent of the debunked hydroxychloroquine covid-19 treatment, co-authored a retracted paper that claimed 74 percent of autopsies of people who 'suddenly died' showed they were vaccinated, suggesting that was the cause. According to the company's site, the 'extra-strength formula' designed by the 'world's leading pandemic expert' includes 'a key enzyme that may help break down spike protein and disrupt its function.' It also claims it will provide the user's 'body with unparalleled support for cellular defense and detoxification.' Despite McCullough having his board certifications for cardiovascular disease and internal medicine revoked by the American Board of Internal Medicine earlier this year for promoting misinformation about covid-19 vaccinations, McCain urged her followers to buy the supplements – and even gave her name as a promotional discount code. 'Concerning data continues to emerge regarding mRNA vaccines and their unforeseen health impacts,' she tweeted on Wednesday. 'They did not deliver what was promised by government + health officials. I have friends who suffered – heart and menstruation issues & more. It's time to pull them off the market NOW.' McCain added: 'Thrilled to partner with The Wellness Company! If you regret taking the shot, there's hope. Dr. Peter McCullough's all-natural Ultimate Spike Detox is helping people worldwide. Use code MCCAIN for 10% off + FREE shipping on all orders.' It was just a few short years ago, however, that McCain was criticizing others as being 'deeply irresponsible' for pushing skepticism over the vaccines. Additionally, when the Biden administration was first rolling out vaccinations to the public, she expressed 'vaccine envy' because she wasn't sure when she was personally going to get the shot. Along those lines, she complained during a July 2021 broadcast of The View that the Biden White House turned down her offer to help the president reach out to 'vaccine-hesitant' Republicans and convince them to get the jab. McCain promoting a disgraced doctor's supplements while partnering with a company that is pandering to anti-vax conspiracists prompted several media figures and observers to call her out as a right-wing grifter. 'Meghan Goes Full Grift: Is Meghan McCain that desperate for some extra cash?' Status News founder Oliver Darcy pointed out in his newsletter, adding: 'For someone who spent years portraying herself as the voice of reason on the right, this is quite the grift.' Gizmodo reporter Matt Novak shared a screenshot of McCain's tweet and noted that 'the entire conservative movement must be funded by health grifts at this point,' while author Stephen Elliott claimed that 'they all sell snake oil eventually' because the 'incentives are too great not to.' Cybersecurity expert Rob Graham, meanwhile, said that while McCain 'would speak out against the crazies' and defend actual science five years ago, she has since 'been captured by her audience' now that she is a conservative podcaster. 'Her audience is drifting further to the fringe, so is she,' he stated. 'So she's now become the thing she [fought] against 5 years ago. From being the champion on the Right-wing against the crazies, she's sold out to the crazies.' Ironically, it was just a few months ago that McCain herself appeared to take issue with those she saw as hustling and camming their audience. 'Grifters can only keep up a grift for so long,' she tweeted in December. Representatives for McCain did not respond to a request for comment. This isn't the first time McCain has been accused of hypocrisy. Earlier this year, she announced that she was 'excited' to be joining a media startup run by political journalist Mark Halperin, whom McCain had publicly trashed years prior over allegations that he sexually assaulted and harassed multiple women. 'With age comes wisdom and different perspectives on people. I am now a 40 year old mother of two. I have grown and evolved like everyone else, particularly in the past five years — Mark has also grown and evolved,' she said when asked at the time by The Independent what had changed regarding her views on Halperin. 'Like Mark, at this point in my life I believe in giving people the presumption of grace and forgiveness as I would like it in return.' Just three months after joining Halperin's 2way network, low viewership continued to plague the show, prompting her to merge her existing Citizen McCain podcast with the YouTube program in hopes of sparking interest.
