Iraq's Al-Sistani says Pope Francis sought peace
Baghdad – Grand Ayatollah Ali Al-Sistani, Shiite Islam's highest authority in Iraq, offered his condolences on Monday for the death of Pope Francis, praising his work promoting 'peace and tolerance'.
Al-Sistani, 94, who met the late pontiff in 2021 in the first-ever papal visit to Iraq, said in a statement issued by his office that it was an 'important milestone' in supporting interfaith dialogue and 'rejecting violence and hatred'.
Francis had a 'special role in serving the causes of peace and tolerance, and solidarity with the oppressed and persecuted around the world', Al-Sistani said.
After his historic trip to Iraq, Francis said his meeting with Al-Sistani — who is extremely reclusive and rarely grants audiences — had been 'good for my soul'.
The meeting marked a landmark moment in modern religious history and for Francis's efforts to deepen interfaith dialogue. Al-Sistani told the pope that Iraq's Christians should live in 'peace'.
Despite the high risks to his personal safety, Francis visited the largely-ruined city of Mosul that was ravaged by the Islamic State group until the jihadists' defeat in 2017.
By the time of Francis's visit, Iraq's Christian population had shrunk during years of violence in the country to fewer than 400,000, from around 1.5 million before the US-led invasion of 2003.
Francis prayed for the victims of war outside the ruined centuries-old Al-Tahera (Immaculate Conception) Church, where he pleaded for Christians in Iraq and the Middle East to stay in their homelands.
On Monday, Benedictus Younan Hanno, the Archbishop of the Syriac Catholic Church of Mosul, the capital of Nineveh province, home to one of the world's oldest Christian communities, called on churches to ring their bells for the deceased pope.
Iraq's Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani mourned a pope who had 'a life devoted to serving humanity.'
'We recall with reverence his historic visit to Iraq… an event that laid a meaningful foundation for interfaith dialogue and promoted fraternity and compassion among people of all faiths,' he said.

Areas we are closely monitoring, with a focus on statements by governments, terrorist and rebel groups, and their leaders, include: Iran: As U.S.-Iran nuclear talks seem unlikely to lead to an agreement, Iran is continuing its activity to attain nuclear weapons. However, the problem of Iran is not limited to its nuclear ambitions, but is much broader: its dictatorial Islamic regime, its ideology ("Death to America"), its terrorist activity and proxies, its repression of human rights and ethnic minorities, and more. Qatar and Turkey: Qatar, the foremost sponsor of terrorism worldwide, that pretends to be an ally of the U.S., is under increased scrutiny amid its campaign to buy influence, including in U.S. higher education. (It will be recalled that when ISIS emerged in 2014, Turkey, with the approval of President Erdogan, allowed many thousands of foreign fighters cross its territory to join its ranks.) Gaza and Lebanon: In Gaza, Hamas continues to reject any deal involving a release of the living hostages it holds and the bodies of those it murdered. In Lebanon, Hizbullah is reorganizing in the south and in Dahia on the outskirts of Beirut, and the Lebanese government is not fulfilling its commitment to tackle it – thus, Israel is forced to continue the war to stop it. (As will be remembered, the day after Hamas's October 7 attack, Hizbullah joined the war, bombing Israel's north, killing residents and displacing 350,000 of them to other areas of the country.) Syria : The U.S. has decided to comply with the request of Turkey and Qatar – which pretend to be allies of the U.S. – to give Syria's new government a chance, although it is headed by a designated terrorist who headed a designated terror organization that attracted jihadis from across Asia, all in order to prevent Iran from reinstating its influence in Syria. We are monitoring this process in order to be certain that Syria is not turning against the U.S. or Israel – and there are already indications that it might be. Yemen's Houthis: The Houthis, an Iran-sponsored jihadi organization, has disrupted shipping in the Red Sea, launching missiles and drones against U.S. vessels and Israel. The U.S. has quieted them to the point where they agreed to a ceasefire – but they continue to attack Israel. Jihadi activity: There are increased threats and chatter about lone wolf attacks in the West, from ISIS, Al-Qaeda, and other jihadi organizations. Russia-Iran-China Alliance: The triad of evil continues its joint military and political activity against the West, as each individually continues to focus on its own goals in their respective regions – Russia on Ukraine, Iran on all its terror proxies, and China on the Pacific Rim, including South Korea, Taiwan, and the Philippines. US envoy warns of assassination threat to Syria's Al-Sharaa
Shafaq News/ On Tuesday, US envoy to Syria Thomas Barrack voiced concern over the safety of Syria's transitional president, Ahmad al-Sharaa, warning that his efforts to promote inclusive governance and build relations with the West could make him a target for assassination by what he described as 'disgruntled militants.' In remarks to Al-Monitor, Barrack called for the establishment of a coordinated protection system around al-Sharaa, underscoring that US and Syrian interests are increasingly aligned. Barrack also highlighted the continuing risk posed by armed factions of foreign fighters who had joined forces with al-Sharaa during the campaign that led to the removal of former president Bashar al-Assad in early December. Although the current leadership is working to integrate these fighters into the national army, he noted they remain susceptible to recruitment by extremist groups, including ISIS. That risk, Barrack added, is part of a broader set of challenges confronting al-Sharaa's administration. These include the integration of Kurdish military units into the national army, the absorption of foreign fighter formations, and the management of extensive detention facilities across northern Syria. Turning to regional dynamics, Barrack voiced cautious optimism that, despite the absence of direct communication, Israel and the new Syrian leadership could reach a tacit understanding, warning that any military escalation at this point would carry severe consequences for all sides.

CENTCOM chief: US ready to strike Iran if Trump orders
Shafaq News/ On Tuesday, CENTCOM Commander General Michael Kurilla announced that the United States is prepared to respond with 'overwhelming force' to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, if ordered to do so by President Donald Trump. In an address to the Senate Armed Services Committee, Kurilla described the current moment as a 'strategic opportunity' to stop Iran from becoming a nuclear-armed state, confirming that a broad set of plans had been presented to both the president and the secretary of defense to address the Iranian nuclear program. In his final testimony before leaving office, Kurilla labeled Iran's response to the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack on Israel as a turning point, accusing it of 'operationalized its entire proxy network and arsenal of standoff capabilities' to advance long-standing strategic aims. He noted that the network includes groups such as Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis, which have suffered major setbacks in recent months. On Yemen, he considered the Houthis as a deeply entrenched force aligned with Tehran, responsible for more than 300 attacks targeting Israeli assets and international shipping lanes, adding that CENTCOM responded with targeted military operations that significantly degraded the group's capabilities, forcing the Houthis to halt maritime assaults.
