Months-old footage misrepresented as missile attack on Pakistan

Yahoo16-05-2025

The video, showing a barrage of missiles and explosions illuminated against the night sky, was shared on X on May 7, 2025.
The clip, which was viewed more than 1,400 times and bears the watermark of Indian news channel DD, circulated after New Delhi launched deadly missile strikes on Pakistan (archived link).
"Hello @RahulGandhi and @ArvindKejriwal. Here is the video proof of Air Strike on Pakistan and its terror bases. Now don't dare to ask for proof from my beloved Indian Army," reads its caption, addressing opposition leaders Rahul Gandhi and Arvind Kejriwal.
The politicians had in previous years asked for proof about strikes across the border, and were criticised by the ruling government (archived here and here).
New Delhi said the strikes were in response to an attack that killed 26 tourists on the Indian-run side of disputed Kashmir, which it blamed on Islamabad. Pakistan has denied any involvement.
The nuclear-armed neighbours then exchanged tit-for-tat missile, drone and fighter jet attacks which killed at least 70 people in the worst violence between the arch-rivals in decades (archived link).
The latest conflict sparked global concerns that it could spiral into a full-blown war before a ceasefire was brokered on May 10 bringing a halt to the violence.
The clip purportedly showing the Indian air strikes were also shared in similar posts on Facebook and X.
But it previously circulated in news reports from October 2024 which said it showed Nevatim airbase in Israel being struck by Iranian missiles.
A reverse image search on Google using keyframes from the falsely shared video led to the same footage published on the YouTube channel of Indian news channel DD India on October 2, 2024 (archived link).
The title of the video reads, "Iranian missiles targeting the Nevatim airbase in the Negev Desert".
Iran said the attack was in response to the killing of Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah in September and Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in late July (archived link).
According to the Pentagon, Tehran launched about twice as many ballistic missiles as it had in its previous direct attack on Israel in April 2024.
The same video was also published on the verified YouTube account of The New York Post on October 2, 2024 (archived link). The footage was credited to video agency SCOPAL.
"The video was provided to us by an Arab Israeli agency who is a very regular supplier to SCOPAL," the agency's chief executive Andrew Steele told AFP on May 16, 2025.
AFP has debunked other misinformation stemming from the India-Pakistan crisis here, here and here.

Trump on Insurrection Act: ‘I would certainly invoke it'

President Trump on Tuesday said he would 'certainly' invoke the Insurrection Act to respond to the demonstrations on the streets of Los Angeles over his immigration policies, if he deemed the move necessary. 'If there's an insurrection, I would certainly invoke it. We'll see,' Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. 'But I can tell you, last night was terrible. The night before that was terrible.' When asked what would lead him to decide an insurrection is taking place, Trump said that in certain areas of Los Angeles last night 'you could have called it an insurrection. It was terrible.' The president had previously suggested he's open to invoking the Insurrection Act, which is a power used sparingly in U.S. history that allows for the use of the military to quell a rebellion. He made the decision to send in the National Guard to Los Angeles without a request from Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) in an unprecedented move to respond to protests of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement raids. He told reporters on Sunday, 'depends on whether or not there's an insurrection' when asked about invoking the law. 'We're just going to see what happens. If we think there's a serious insurrection … we're going to have law and order,' he said. When asked what the bar would be for sending in the Marines, Trump said, 'The bar is what I think it is.' By Monday, 700 active-duty Marines were sent to Los Angeles. As of Monday, a total of 4,000 California National Guard troops were sent in. The Pentagon estimates the deployment of National Guard troops and Marines to the California city will cost around $134 million, the Defense Department's acting comptroller said Tuesday. The president said on Tuesday he would keep the National Guard in place 'until there is no danger' and he also insisted that some demonstrators in Los Angeles are paid insurrectionists. Trump had flirted with the idea of using the Insurrection Act during the 2020 protests over police brutality following the killing of George Floyd in his first term in office. And, he referenced the possibility of doing so during the campaign in the event of protests against his victory, saying he would do so in Democrat-run states.

News outlets in crisis mode as Google-led AI search push crushes website traffic

Major news outlets are in crisis mode as artificial intelligence chatbots pushed by Google and other Big Tech giants crush website traffic. Google has rolled out an 'AI Overviews' feature in its search engine that demotes traditional 'blue links' to other sites in favor of auto-generated summaries. Last month, the search giant rolled out 'AI Mode' – which is expected to make the problem even worse by respond to search queries with chatbot-style conversations and few direct links. Nicholas Thompson, the CEO of news outlet The Atlantic, told employees earlier this year that they should assume traffic from Google will drop toward zero over time, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday. 'Google is shifting from being a search engine to an answer engine,' Thompson told the Journal. 'We have to develop new strategies.' 3 Google CEO Sundar Pichai recently rolled out AI Mode for search. AFP via Getty Images Dwindling traffic is hurting revenue for cash-strapped newsrooms and fueling layoffs. When Business Insider slashed 21% of its staff in a newsroom-wide culling last month, its top boss Barbara Peng said the move was meant to help 'endure extreme traffic drops outside of our control.' Traffic to Business Insider's website plunged by a whopping 55% from April 2022 to April 2025, according to data from analytics sites Similarweb cited by the Journal. HuffPost has also lost more than half of its traffic over the same period, the data showed, while the Washington Post – another newsroom racked by job cuts – has lost nearly half its search audience. The rollout of AI-generated summaries in place of links 'is a serious threat to journalism that should not be underestimated,' Washington Post CEO William Lewis said. Google did not immediately return a request for comment. 3 AI features are hurting search traffic for news outlets. REUTERS Despite the traffic losses, Google has claimed that it is still funneling traffic to news sites through search. Critics, such as the News Media Alliance – a trade group that represents hundreds of news outlets including The Post – has warned that AI Overviews and other Google-implemented AI features will have devastating consequences for the industry. They allege that Google and other AI giants have used news content to train their chatbots without proper credit or compensation – and then used those same products to erode traffic. Danielle Coffey, the CEO and president of News Media Alliance, blasted Googles' rollout of AI Mode last month as 'theft.' 'Links were the last redeeming quality of search that gave publishers traffic and revenue,' Coffey said. 'Now Google just takes content by force and uses it with no return, the definition of theft. The DOJ remedies must address this to prevent continued domination of the internet by one company.' 3 Google CEO Sundar Pichai is pictured. AFP via Getty Images The AI push comes as Google faces intense pressure from the feds over its business model – including losses in a pair of antitrust cases brought by the DOJ that could force a breakup of the company. US District Judge Amit Mehta is set to decide by August on how to break up Google's illegal dominance over online search after labeling the company as a 'monopolist' in an initial ruling last year. DOJ lawyers want Mehta to consider the future impact of AI when crafting remedies. Elsewhere, Google recently lost a separate DOJ case in which it was determined to have two illegal monopolies over digital advertising technology. In that case, US District Judge Leonie Brinkema touched on the impact to news outlets, finding that Google's 'exclusionary conduct substantially harmed Google's publisher customers, the competitive process, and, ultimately, consumers of information on the open web.' The remedy phase of the digital ad tech trial will begin in September.

Dem Calif. Rep. Maxine Waters blatantly lies about LA protests: ‘There was no violence'

Democratic California Rep. Maxine Waters on Tuesday made the outright false assertion that there was 'no violence' taking place in Los Angeles during its fiery anti-ICE riots. The lefty 18-term congresswoman told the enormous whopper during a press conference as she hit out at the Trump administration for deploying thousands of National Guard members and hundreds of active-duty Marines to try to quell the destructive chaos that have engulfed the city for four days and nights. 'Nobody was shot, nobody was killed, get it into your head,' the 86-year-old told reporters with a completely straight face. 7 Rep. BROWN/AFP via Getty Images 'Don't think that somehow because they called out the National Guard there was violence. There was no violence. I was on the street, I know,' she claimed. 'And I went from downtown detention back out into the community, what happened in Paramount, what happened in Compton, what happened in Inglewood. Get it straight, and don't just rely on what you're being told or the few incidents you saw.' Harrowing footage Sunday captured the moment California cops shot a New York Post photographer in the head with a rubber bullet as he covered one of the violent protests. An Australian TV reporter also was struck by a rubber bullet, and a New York Times reporter was hit, too, during the rioting. A dead man was found early Tuesday near the scene of some downtown looting, as well, although probers are not yet sure whether his death is tied to the chaos. Compton and Paramount were ground zero for some of the worst of the violence that has broken out in LA since the protests began over a series of raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement to root out lawbreakers. 7 Waters claimed that there has been 'no violence' at the anti-ICE protests in LA. AP Photo/Eric Thayer Rioters in Paramount hurled rocks and Molotov cocktails as riot cops fired back with less-lethal countermeasures including rubber bullets, smoke bombs and pepper spray to beat back the crowd. In Compton, dozens of masked, hooded thugs ransacked a convenience store, smashing windows and loading up with ill-gotten merchandise in a caught-on-video crime spree. Video inside the store showed criminals raiding the cash register and even cutting the cord to credit card terminals and stuffing them in plastic bags. 7 People seen looting a convenience store in Compton amid the LA riots. 7 People walking through broken glass doors at the Compton store. 7 Looters going through merchandise at the convenience store. Elsewhere around the city, at least 2,000 protesters took over LA's 101 Freeway, bringing traffic to a standstill as California Highway Patrol riot cops corralled the mob onto an exit ramp. The roadway was briefly reopened later that night but shut down again after rioters started throwing objects like bricks, scooters and other projectiles onto police cars traveling in the southbound lanes, the LAPD said. Cops have arrested nearly 60 rioters since Friday, with the Department of Justice promising to find and punish anyone who committed crimes against federal officers. 7 Rioters waving Mexican flags in front of cars set on fire in LA on June 8, 2025. Photo by RINGO CHIU/AFP via Getty Images Waters' fibbing echoes other Democrats as well as left-leaning media outlets' repeat assertions that the protests were 'peaceful,' despite several law enforcement officers being injured in the mayhem. Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) said on MSNBC that 'the vast majority of protesters and demonstrators are peaceful,' calling the rioters who torched cars and vandalized public buildings 'passionate.' Other pols, including Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ), blamed President Trump for the violence. 'A lot of these peaceful protests are being generated because the president of the United States is sowing chaos,' he said on NBC's 'Meet the Press.' 7 Cars getting destroyed during the protests against ICE raids in LA. Toby Canham for NY Post But Dem Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman warned his own party to keep things real. 'I unapologetically stand for free speech, peaceful demonstrations, and immigration—but this is not that,' Fetterman wrote on X on Monday evening. 'This is anarchy and true chaos. My party loses the moral high ground when we refuse to condemn setting cars on fire, destroying buildings, and assaulting law enforcement.'
