Cynthia Erivo crowned best actress at BET Awards
British singer and actress Cynthia Erivo was crowned best actress at the Black Entertainment Television (BET) Awards in Los Angeles. Hosted by Kevin Hart, Monday's BET Awards celebrated the work of black people in music, entertainment, film, sports and philanthropy. The London-born star, who rose to worldwide prominence last year for her role in Wicked, was also nominated for the BET Her Award — which recognises empowering songs that focus on women — for her rendition of Defying Gravity. Grammy Award-winning rapper Doechii used her acceptance speech to sharply criticise US President Donald Trump's handling of protests in Los Angeles. The Swamp Princess takes her crown again! Standing ovation please for the #BETAwards Best Female Hip Hop Artist, @officialdoechii 👑 In case you couldn't tell, we're your biggest fan! — #BETAwards (@BETAwards) June 10, 2025 Collecting the award for best female hip-hop artist, she accused the president of 'creating fear and chaos' in his response to demonstrations against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids, which sparked days of protest across the city. 'I do want to address what's happening right now, outside the building,' she said. 'These are ruthless attacks that are creating fear and chaos in our communities. In the name of law and order, Trump is using military forces to stop a protest, and I want you all to consider what kind of government it appears to be, when every time we exercise our democratic right to protest, the military is deployed against us.' Mr Trump announced plans to deploy 2,000 National Guard troops to California to quell the protests, which began on Friday. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the move was 'essential to halting and reversing the invasion of illegal criminals into the United States'. The decision drew sharp criticism from Democratic politicians, including California Governor Gavin Newsom, who called the move 'purposefully inflammatory'. London-based girl-group FLO missed out after picking up nominations for best group and the Bet Her award for their track In My Bag, featuring GloRilla. Fellow UK artists Bashy and Ezra Collective earned nominations for best international artist, while multi-genre artist Odeal and R&B singer kwn were shortlisted for best new international act. Kendrick Lamar, who led the pack with 10 nominations, took home awards for album of the year and best male hip-hop artist. He also won video of the year and video director of the year for his hit Not Like Us, as well as best collaboration for Luther, his track with SZA SZA won best female R&B/pop artist, while Chris Brown took home best male R&B/pop artist. The evening featured a star-studded cast, including actor Jamie Foxx, with performances by Ashanti, Mariah Carey and GloRilla. Foxx, Carey, gospel star Kirk Franklin and Snoop Dogg were honoured with the ultimate icon award for their contributions to community, entertainment, and advocacy. Miles Canton, Luke James and Lucky Daye delivered an R&B tribute to Quincy Jones, who died in November.

Tyler Perry Slams Erasure Of Black History In Politically Charged BET Speech
Tyler Perry wasted no time tearing into Trump's administration and the divisive state of America during the BET Awards Monday night. After sharing a brief story about his son, the billionaire media mogul launched into an impassioned State of the Union-esque address to condemn what has been happening in the country as of late — specifically with the erasure of Black history. 'I want you to pay attention to— don't miss this,' he began onstage. 'They are removing our books from libraries. They are removing our stories and our history. They are removing our names from government buildings as if someone wants to erase our footprints.' 'Because what we need to understand is that if our children don't know our history, they won't know our power,' Perry added. The filmmaker pointed his message to Black viewers, telling them, 'The truth of the matter [is], it's impossible to erase our footprints, because we left them on water. What I mean by that is, we were snatched from our homeland, bought across the ocean and left footprints all the way to America.' Perry continued his history lesson, nodding to the sanitation of African American history in museums and calling out American tragedies like the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, where several businesses were famously burned down on Oklahoma's Black Wall Street in an effort to destroy the thriving community. 'So, this is not the time to be silent,' Perry continued to the audience. 'This is not the time to give up. This is the time to dig in and keep leaving footprints everywhere you go.' He even took a moment to brag about how he's 'made more Black millionaires than any studio in this city combined.' 'Because I'm making footprints,' he added. Perry concluded his powerful speech, saying, 'So I don't care if you're struggling, if you're trying to make it, if you're trying to build a business. If you have a dream, keep making footprints. Don't let anybody stop you. You can do it.' Perry isn't the only star who took hold of the BET Awards spotlight to deliver a politically charged message. Doechii, who won Best Female Hip-Hop Artist, used her acceptance speech to blast the 'ruthless attacks' from Trump's administration after it deployed military forces on Los Angeles protests over the weekend over immigration raids. 'Trump is using military forces to stop a protest,' she said. 'And I want y'all to consider what kind of government it appears to be when every time we exercise our democratic rights to protest, the military is deployed against us.' 'I feel it's my responsibility as an artist to use this moment to speak up for all oppressed people,' the rapper added. 'For Black people, for Latino people, for trans people, for the people of Gaza, we all deserve to live in hope and not in fear, and I hope we stand together, my brothers and my sisters, against hate. And we protest against it.' Jon Stewart Weighs In On L.A. Protests, Says Trump Is Escalating To Distract From Elon Musk's Epstein Accusation: 'Petty And Petulant Man-Babies'
Jon Stewart weighed in on the Los Angeles protests in opposition to Donald Trump's escalation of ICE deportations, saying the tactic is to distract from the tit-for-tat feud between him and Elon Musk, in which the tech titan accused him of being in the Jeffrey Epstein files. 'Is your city ever not on fire? Whether you win a basketball championship, a World Series championship, whether you have an exploding piñata gender reveal gone wrong — congratulations, it's a boy and an evacuation — or you're just protesting the Trump administration's expanded deportation raids, L.A. continues to be our most flammable city,' Stewart began during tonight's installment of The Daily Show. More from Deadline Why There Is So Much Worry In Public Media That Donald Trump Will Win Fight To Defund NPR, PBS And Local Stations Trump Sending Marines To L.A. To Respond To ICE Protests; POTUS Also Plans To Deploy Additional 2,000 Guard Troops, Gavin Newsom Says - Update BET Awards Set To Go On Amid LA Protests Against Immigration Raids Commenting specifically on the autonomous vehicles that were set on fire during some of the demonstrations, Stewart quipped: 'Took five of them before you were like, 'Should we stop sending the Waymos?'' He added jokingly, 'How dare you? How could you use Waymo's innocence and helpful spirit against the Waymo? Imagine for a moment: Waymo's disappointment upon realizing it was, as Admiral Ackbar might say, 'a trap!' You got Waymo going, 'Hello, it is my honor to take you to Hollywood and—what are you doing? My God no! I'm giving you only one star. Tell my Roomba I love her!'' In his signature misdirect, Stewart then seemingly praised the MAGA-sphere for approaching the crisis in the City of Angels with a 'somber' tone, playing clips of a series of newscasts, including Ted Cruz saying the situation was 'deeply unfortunate.' Except — 'I'm sorry, I'm being told that wasn't about Los Angeles,' Stewart said, 'that was them heartbroken that Trump and Elon have gone no-contact. That's a slightly different thing. That's true. See, for the Right right now, I guess that's the real national tragedy … See, the upset in L.A. is in a blue state, in a blue city, with people that they don't give a f— about.' Insinuating that the sending of the National Guard is to 'distract from' another important matter, Stewart addressed Musk's allegation, which has since been scrubbed from his X social media platform. 'Oh right, that's what we were talking about, which, now, to be fair to Trump, it is ridiculous — I mean, you can't just make wild accusations like that just because Trump and Epstein hung out once, or twice, or Trump was in the flight logs or Epstein called Trump his 'closest friend,' or they went to parties and whispered, I can only assume, Biblical passages in each other's ears,' he said. Concluding his segment, the political comic added, 'It must be hard for the Right to see how petty and petulant these two man-babies are and how they wield their power in vindictive and capricious manners when they don't get exactly their way and the damage that that behavior causes. And I guess what I would say to the Right is: 'Welcome to our f—ing world every day. Now you know.''
