French President Emmanuel Macron to make state visit to UK in July

Euronews13-05-2025

French President Emmanuel Macron will make a state visit to the United Kingdom in July, Buckingham Palace has announced, as the two countries seek to bolster ties to counter Russian aggression and the economic fallout from US President Donald Trump's aggressive new trade policy.
Macron and his wife, Brigitte, will stay at Windsor Castle during the visit, which will take place from 8-10 July.
The dates mean that Macron will likely beat Trump to London. King Charles III invited the US president in February to make an unprecedented second state visit to the UK, but no date has been set yet.
King Charles and Queen Camilla travelled to France in September 2023 in a visit that highlighted the historic ties between Britain and its closest neighbour on the European continent.
That trip came after years of sometimes prickly relations strained by Britain's exit from the European Union and amid ongoing disagreements over the growing number of migrants crossing the English Channel on small boats.
Speaking to French lawmakers in the Senate chamber in Paris on the second day of that visit, King Charles said the alliance between the two countries was more important than ever as he recalled how they had worked together to defeat Nazi Germany.
King Charles was a frequent visitor to France before becoming king, making 35 official visits to the country as heir to the throne.
The last time a French head of state made a state visit to Britain was in March 2008, when President Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, were the guests of Queen Elizabeth II.
State visits are ceremonial meetings between heads of state that are used to honour friendly nations and sometimes smooth relations between rivals.
While the king formally issues the invitation for a state visit, he does so on the advice of the elected government.
State visits to Britain are particularly prized by some heads of state because they come with a full complement of royal pomp and circumstance, including military reviews, carriage rides and a glittering state banquet hosted by the monarch.
The events normally take place in and around Buckingham Palace in central London.
But the Macrons will stay at Windsor Castle, to the west of the capital, as Buckingham Palace is currently undergoing extensive remodelling.
Operations at Brussels South Charleroi Airport have resumed following a bomb threat on a Ryanair flight earlier on Tuesday, Belgian media reported.
All flights into and out of the airport were suspended for several hours after reports were received shortly before 11 am of a bomb on board a Ryanair flight from Faro in Portugal.
That prompted airport authorities to divert the aircraft to a separate area of the airport and set up a 500-metre security perimeter.
The terminal was not evacuated as it lies outside the security zone.
Police carried out security screenings and determined that air traffic could resume.
"Since 13:45, the runway has reopened and operations have resumed," the airport said in a post on Facebook.
However, delays were expected throughout the afternoon, it said.

US pushes countries for best offers by Wednesday as tariff deadline looms

The Trump administration wants countries to provide their best offer on trade negotiations by Wednesday as officials seek to accelerate talks with multiple partners ahead of a self-imposed deadline in just five weeks, according to a draft letter to negotiating partners viewed by Reuters. The draft, from the office of the United States Trade Representative, provides a window into how President Donald Trump plans to bring to a close unwieldy negotiations with dozens of countries that kicked off on April 9 when he paused his "Liberation Day" tariffs for 90 days until July 8 after stock, bond and currency markets revolted over the sweeping nature of the levies. The document suggests an urgency within the administration to complete deals against its own tight deadline. While officials such as White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett have repeatedly promised that several agreements were nearing completion, so far only one agreement has been reached with a major U.S. trading partner: Britain. Even that limited pact was more akin to a framework for ongoing talks than a final deal. According to the draft document, the U.S. is asking countries to list their best proposals in a number of key areas, including tariff and quota offers for purchase of U.S. industrial and agricultural products and plans to remedy any non-tariff barriers. Other requested items include any commitments on digital trade and economic security, along with country-specific commitments, according to the letter. The U.S. will evaluate the responses within days and offer "a possible landing zone" that could include a reciprocal tariff rate, according to the letter. It was unclear to which specific countries the letter would be sent, but it was directed at those where negotiations were active and included meetings and exchanges of documents. Active negotiations have been under way with the European Union, Japan, Vietnam and India, among others. A USTR official said trade negotiations were ongoing. 'Productive negotiations with many key trading partners continue at a rapid pace. It is in all parties' interest to take stock of progress and assess any next steps.'
