Snap to launch smart glasses for users in 2026 in challenge to Meta

The company has invested more than US$3 billion (S$3.8 billion) over 11 years developing its augmented reality glasses. PHOTO: SPECTACLES/INSTAGRAM Snap to launch smart glasses for users in 2026 in challenge to Meta NEW YORK - Snap will launch its first-ever smart glasses for all consumers next year, ratcheting up competition with bigger rival Meta in the wearable technology market. The augmented reality (AR) smart glasses, called Specs, will be lightweight, the social media company said on June 10. Long known for its messaging app Snapchat and animated filters, Snap has been doubling down on AR, which can overlay digital effects onto photos or videos of real-life surroundings through a camera or lens. Integrating technology into wearable products can open up new lucrative markets and diversify revenue streams for Snap amid an uncertain digital ad market due to changing US trade policies. The company had launched its fifth generation of Spectacles glasses in September, but these were only available to developers. The company has invested more than US$3 billion (S$3.8 billion) over 11 years developing its augmented reality glasses, Snap co-founder and chief executive Evan Spiegel said at the Augmented World Expo 2025 on June 10. 'Before Snapchat had chat, we were building glasses.' The popularity of Meta's Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses developed in partnership with EssilorLuxottica have prompted companies such Google to explore similar investments. Meta continues to add AI features to its glasses to attract more consumers. Snap's Specs will be available in black to start, with special editions to possibly follow later, Mr Spiegel said in an interview. He did not disclose the price or hardware specifications, except to say that the glasses will cost less than Apple's US$3,499 (S$4,502) Vision Pro headset. The glasses also incorporate an artificial intelligence assistant, a way to play games with friends, and a 'workstation' area where users can do things like browse the web and stream video. 'We're really focused on and investing in glasses with things that the phone just isn't capable of,' Mr Spiegel said. Mr Spiegel teased a handful of upcoming hardware features and software capabilities, such as using AI to help change a tire, set the dining room table or nail a tricky billiards shot. New versions of Snapchat Lenses, the company's augmented-reality experiences, run the gamut from having an archery match with friends to playing a 3D version of the classic Snake game. Over 400,000 developers have built more than 4 million Lenses using Snap's tools, Mr Spiegel said. Specs will also integrate with various AI models, including those from OpenAI and Alphabet's Google, allowing developers to build AI-powered Lenses that can respond to various inputs in real time. The device will also support uses such as AI text translation, currency conversion and recipe suggestions based on what's in your refrigerator – capabilities that have already been built for the latest developer version of the company's smart glasses. As the wider tech industry grapples with concerns over AI and privacy, Mr Spiegel said his company is taking the issue seriously. 'Regardless of the demographic or age, privacy is incredibly important to us as a company and incredibly important for the future of these sorts of devices,' he said, adding that the device will strike a balance between providing the right features while protecting users' data. Gold rises as US-China trade uncertainty persists, investors eye inflation data

GOLD prices edged higher on Wednesday as uncertainty surrounding the finalisation of a US-China trade agreement weighed on sentiment and fuelled some safe-haven buying, with investors awaiting key US inflation data for further market direction. Spot gold rose 0.2 per cent to US$3,328.89 an ounce, as of 0153 GMT. US gold futures were up 0.2 per cent to US$3,349.80. US and Chinese officials agreed on a framework to put their trade truce back on track and resolve China's export restrictions on rare earth minerals and magnets, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said on Tuesday at the conclusion of two days of intense negotiations in London. Lutnick said that the US team plans to present the framework to President Donald Trump for approval prior to implementation, while the Chinese delegation will similarly seek an endorsement from President Xi Jinping. 'We know that US and Chinese negotiators have agreed on a 'framework', but until Trump or Xi approves them, uncertainty lingers. And that uncertainty is supporting gold heading into the inflation figures,' said Matt Simpson, a senior analyst at City Index. The US and China had imposed tit-for-tat tariffs in April, sparking a trade war. Following talks in Geneva last month, both nations agreed to cut tariffs back from triple-digit levels. Sign Up Sign Up The World Bank on Tuesday slashed its global growth forecast for 2025 by four-tenths of a percentage point to 2.3 per cent, saying that higher tariffs and heightened uncertainty posed a 'significant headwind' for nearly all economies. The US consumer price index (CPI) report due at 1230 GMT could give investors more guidance on the US Federal Reserve's policy path. The Federal Reserve will keep interest rates on hold for at least another couple of months, according to most economists polled by Reuters, as risks linger that inflation may resurge due to Trump's tariff policies. Elsewhere, spot silver was unchanged at US$36.53 per ounce, platinum fell 0.4 per cent to US$1,216.42, while palladium was up 0.3 per cent to US$1,063.62. REUTERS

Ong Beng Seng to plead guilty on July 3 in case involving ex-transport minister

Ong Beng Seng to plead guilty on July 3 in case involving ex-transport minister Source: Straits Times Article Date: 11 Jun 2025 Author: Nadine Chua The 79-year-old property tycoon was previously scheduled to plead guilty on April 2. Billionaire Ong Beng Seng, who is facing two charges in a case linked to former transport minister S. Iswaran, will be pleading guilty on July 3. The date was set after his pre-trial conference on June 10. The 79-year-old was previously scheduled to plead guilty on April 2, but the case was adjourned after his lawyers asked for more time to obtain his medical reports. The property tycoon was charged on Oct 4, 2024, with abetting a public servant in obtaining gifts and with abetting the obstruction of justice. Under Section 165, it is an offence for a public servant to accept anything of value from any person with whom he is involved in an official capacity without payment or with inadequate payment. According to court documents, the businessman had in December 2022 allegedly arranged for Mr Iswaran to fly on Ong's private plane from Singapore to Doha. The flight was valued at US$7,700 (S$10,400). Ong is also said to have arranged for Mr Iswaran a one-night stay at Four Seasons Hotel Doha, valued at $4,737.63, and a business-class flight from Doha to Singapore, valued at $5,700. Court documents showed it was allegedly Ong who alerted Mr Iswaran that the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau had seized the flight manifest for the December 2022 trip. It prompted Mr Iswaran to ask the tycoon to bill him for the flight to avoid investigations. For this alleged offence, Ong was charged with the abetment of obstruction of justice. The businessman is known as the man who brought Formula One (F1) to Singapore in 2008 – the first night race in the sport's history. Mr Iswaran was chairman of the F1 steering committee and the Government's chief negotiator with Singapore GP on business matters related to the race. The two men had worked in the mid-2000s to convince then Formula One Group chief executive Bernie Ecclestone to make Singapore the venue for the sport's first night race. On Oct 3, 2024, Mr Iswaran was handed a 12-month jail term after he pleaded guilty to five charges, including obtaining valuable items as a public servant from Ong and Mr David Lum Kok Seng, managing director of construction company Lum Chang Holdings. Mr Iswaran was placed on the Home Detention Scheme on Feb 7, 2025. On June 6, the Singapore Prison Service said he completed his emplacement on the Home Detention Scheme and that he was no longer under prison custody. Source: The Straits Times © SPH Media Limited.
