Marcus Brigstocke opens up about ‘shameful' and ‘lonely' porn addiction

Independent28-01-2025

Comedian Marcus Brigstocke has opened up about a difficult porn addiction, which he says left him in a 'terrible place'.
The 59-year-old actor, known for his stand-up comedy and acting, including a cameo in Love Actually, said he's been in recovery for over seven years.
'It changed my sexual self completely,' he told The i about his challenges. 'The things I was into sexually were altered by what I was seeing. I won't go into specifics but it taught me there is so much elasticity in our sexuality.'
He added that porn addicts have 'really f**king awful sex if they're having sex at all', describing his experience as 'awful, shameful, lonely'.
He added: 'It's unhappy. Unhappy making. Afterwards, porn addicts will lie there thinking: 'Well that seems to have made us really quite miserable'.'
Brigstocke said that it 'one hundred per cent' changed the way he interacted with women, leaving him in a cycle of shame and isolation and creating a 'hole' that left him feeling unlovable.
The comedian split from his first wife Sophie Prideaux after an affair with his 2010 Spamalot co-star Hayley Tammadon.
'It's a terrible place to find yourself in, because even if somebody looks you directly in the eyes and says 'I love you', you're thinking, 'That's because you don't know what I did,' he said. 'You wouldn't love me if you knew'.'
After a difficult detox that took months, Brigstocke says that these days he is overly cautious and is unaffected even by images on social media.
'You can start to be in the world and enjoy the simple things again,' he said. 'I've quit it in all its forms. Even a scantily clothed person on Facebook, I scroll past and do not pause for a split second. Now I have rediscovered the joy of simple things, of living in the moment again.'
Describing the effect on children, he explained that he'd had a frank discussion with his son about porn and its dangers.
'I had a conversation with my oldest son about it when he was in his early teens,' he explained. 'I said: 'You're going to see things that don't look like love, don't look like sex, don't look like how people in the real world should treat each other.'

ITV Coronation Street viewers rumble devastating split for beloved fan favourite couple

Coronation Street fans believe the end is near for one beloved couple as viewers have predicted a break-up is on the cards in upcoming scenes. ITV Coronation Street fans believe that a beloved couple could be set to split in upcoming scenes. Carla Connor, played by Alison King and Lisa Swain, portrayed by Vicky Myers, started their relationship at the end of last year and have since been hailed as a "power couple" by viewers. The pair, who are affectionately nicknamed as Swarla by fans, are currently living together with Lisa's teenage daughter, Betsy, played by Sydney Martin. It's been a difficult few weeks for the detective sergeant after the death of her employee, Craig Tinker, played by Colson Smith, last month. ‌ Lisa was left heartbroken by Craig's death with Carla left to console her at home. Keen to secure her future with Carla sooner rather than later, Lisa asked her partner to marry her in a cliffhanger ending. ‌ Carla later questioned if Lisa had intended to propose with the detective admitting that she may have let her emotions get the better of her, Leicester Mercury reports. Carla asked: "So you didn't mean it?" Carla asked, with Lisa replying: "No, I did. Of course I did. I love you" before explaining that she was just trying to be "nice". ‌ Carla jokingly remarked that Lisa should buy her a cake if she just wanted to be nice, with Lisa responding: "Fine, I was stupid, so now I'm officially withdrawing my offer." Carla then said that she hopes they will get married one day but added that it needs to be out of "love, not grief". During Monday night's episode on June 9, Lisa gave Carla and Betsy the cold shoulder ahead of Craig's memorial the following day. ‌ At Underworld, Carla spoke to Betsy about her worry for Lisa, saying: "It's just your mum. She's very hard to read, isn't she? "I've been trying to get her to open up, what with it being the memorial tomorrow, and she won't say anything." ‌ Betsy revealed that she was used to being met with her mum's one-word answers, a sign that she was "struggling". Determined to cheer Lisa up, Carla decided to make her a romantic dinner. However, Lisa was not impressed with this kind gesture when she returned home, saying: "I didn't ask for this, Carla." ‌ Lisa insisted that she was "fine" and quickly left the flat to go for a walk to clear her head. After watching the tense scenes unfold, Coronation Street viewers are convinced that a break up could now be on the cards for the coule. Taking to a Facebook fan page, one wrote: "Wow Lisa, why not throw your truncheon and whistle out of the pram, what a child! ‌ Another chimed in: "Really can't see those two getting married". Meanwhile, a third agreed: "Don't think they are matched well for each other. They'll probably split soon." A fourth fan echoed the sentiment, saying: "Lisa has gone funny since Carla turned her down," with another similarly sharing: "I think they will split up, this relationship doesn't work."
