Anyone for tennis? Not me but the ace Megasaray Club Belek serves up a stunning five star treat for holidaymakers
Michael Gannon headed to Antalya in Turkey to check out a stunning resort that is a regular stopping point on the tennis tour
My new German chum recognised the Scottish accent but my gag was lost in translation.
'Ah, you are like Andy Murray, are you here for the tennis?'
'I'm more like Chic Murray,' I replied. Perhaps understandably he'd never heard of the legendary Scottish stand-up.
I wasn't there for the tennis either. I was at the Megasaray Club Belek for a luxurious family break.
And it was ace.
In fairness to my new friend, it was a fair question. The superb resort in Türkiye's Antalya coast is renowned for tennis. With more than 20 top class courts, exceptional training facilities, including a SPA and wellness centre, along with a gym.
Little wonder it's a regular staging point for World Tennis Association ranking events and a Mecca for amateur players looking to some game time in stunning weather.
There are as many racquet bags as there are beach bags around the stunning complex. There are plenty of sublime golf courses on the doorstep as well.
But we were not there to work up a sweat. We were there to relax and soak up some rays after a brutally long Scottish winter.
And this place delivered and then some.
Antalya has become a hot spot for tourists from the UK and beyond and there are a string of five star all includes right along the coast.
The Megasaray Club Belek is more of a hidden gem to British holidaymakers though as it's been more of a haunt for travellers from the rest of Europe.
It's time Brits got in on the secret though.
This place served up a treat.
We spent a week in late spring and it was a winner with my wife and six-yer-old daughter.
The first impressions were, well impressive, and the standards never slipped for a second.
Some of these huge resorts can feel a little overpowering but this one felt much more welcoming and relaxing, which is good going for a place with near 600 rooms and close to 1900 beds.
It was busy without every feeling overcrowded, sprawling yet intimate. We felt right at home from the first minute.
There are several pool areas with beautiful pine tree lined gardens. Each section caters for every taste. There's the main pool, the central hub with plenty of loungers and a winding river around it.
There's also an adults only pool for those wanting some extra peace and quiet with a couple of other ones – hugged by bars – for folk to relax next to.
But my wife's focus was honed in on one part of the hotel in particular – the beach.
The Megasaray has it's only private sandy section with a stunning pier as well.
And as a dedicated beach lover, it was right up her street. The soft sand and still water made it perfect for topping up tans and cooling off with a dip. The cabanas are sensational for those looking for a bit of coastal luxury, with food and drink dished out at a whim.
The pier has loungers and it's own bar too, and it's a stunning spot for a drink, especially later in the afternoon when the sun is starting to dip. Likewise the cool bear bar perched on the water's edge.
If all this sounds incredibly relaxing, you'd be right.
But don't be fooled. There's also a thrilling waterpark for the young – and the young at heart.
My we one is a daredevil at the best of times and her eyes lift up the moment she clocked the chutes and flumes.
I barely got time to slap on the Factor 50 before she had me whisked off to give them a whirl.
She had a ball – I had a bawl. Half of Antalya must have heard my scream when we rocketed down one of the four-storey chutes like the Jamaican bobsleigh team.
It was great fun though and put to full use every single day.
The rewards for her old day came elsewhere. Like the food and drink. And this is where the Megasaray really delivers.
The dinning options were not just good, like they are in a lot of five star all inclusive resorts, they were exception.
At some places, the buffets can be dull and the a la carte options limited.
Not here.
From a breakfast with more options than my mind could cope with, to the sensational street food stack corner and the evening buffet hub, it was full marks for the lot.
It was the a la carte restaurants that were another level. We went for several options, including the Italian, the Mexican and the Chinese.
It was tough to pick a winner as every one of them was top notch.
But if pushed, the Mexican narrowly came out on top. Oh wait, the Italian. No, the Chinese…
Mind you, the shrimp fajitas in the Mexican might just edge it. There was plenty for the fussy youngster in our group as well, with terrific kids menus.
The kids club got a big thumbs up too, as did the entertainment at night which starts with mini discos before a succession of cracking shows for all the family.
It was a hard place to leave but we did venture out to check out its sister hotel, the Megasasay West Beach Antalya, on the beautiful Konyaalti Promenade on the other side of the city.
There was a different vibe there, with a hotel that could have been airlifted out of Miami, with cool design and trendy restaurants and bars.
It's right on the beach and also close to the Antalya old town for people who fancy getting out and about to see the sights.
Back at our HQ we went from a regular room – which was anything but regular with a stunning sea view – to a swim up suite that was something really special.
The Megasaray Club Belek was a smash hit – and that's no joke.

Matt O'Riley's Brighton future ‘uncertain' as Premier League rivals target Celtic hero just nine months after £25m move
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) IT hasn't even been a year since Matt O'Riley sealed a bumper exit from Celtic for £25million. But just nine months on from his megabucks switch to Brighton, the midfielder could be on the move again. He scored 18 goals in 37 Scottish Premiership appearances as the Hoops retained the league title in Brendan Rodgers' first season back as manager. O'Riley had been a revelation at Celtic Park following his £1.5million switch from third tier English side MK Dons back in January 2022 under Ange Postecoglou. His performances quickly caught the attention and by the time the summer transfer window came around last year, it looked like an uphill battle for Celtic to keep the fans' favourite at Parkhead. And so it turned out, as in late August, O'Riley sealed a Scottish record £25m-plus transfer to Brighton and he signed a five-year contract. The big move began in nightmare fashion for the Denmark international. He made his debut in an EFL Cup clash against Crawley the day after completing his move but lasted just nine minutes. A horror tackle resulted in O'Riley having to undergo ankle surgery and he wasn't able to return to action until November. He made his comeback in style, netting a late winner for the Seagulls in a memorable 2-1 win over Manchester City. All in all, however, it was a frustrating season for O'Riley. Matt O'Riley limps off just minutes into Brighton debut after horror Crawley tackle Despite returning to fitness, he failed to hold down a regular starting spot in Fabian Hurzeler's side. Carlos Baleba has been a first pick in the German boss' midfield, while January signing Diego Gomez has also slotted in since his arrival from Inter Miami. The likes of Yasin Ayari, Brajan Gruda and Jack Hinshelwood have also been used more regularly. That's meant O'Riley has largely been restricted to a substitute's role although he did mange a few more starts towards the end of the season, starting six of the last eight matches. O'Riley netted from the spot in the final day 4-1 win over Tottenham after coming off the bench. He's already been linked with an exit from Brighton this summer, with unnamed clubs from England, Germany and Italy credited with an ongoing interest in him. Now, Sky Sports claim that Everton are 'keen' on signing O'Riley should Brighton be willing to let him leave. The report says that there is 'uncertainty' surrounding his future but that the Seagulls also believe O'Riley can play a significant role next season. Meanwhile, Everton have also been linked with a move for Rangers star Mohamed Diomande. The 23-year old joined the Light Blues on an initial loan deal from Danish club Nordsjaelland in January 2024, before the move was made permanent last summer. Diomande is under contract at Ibrox until 2028. Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Ex-Rangers striker sparks wild celebrations with cup-winning penalty
The Northern Irish striker smashed home the winning penalty for Johnstone Burgh to beat Tranent in the final at Broadwood Stadium. Lafferty, who has three top-flight Scottish titles, a Scottish Cup and two League Cups as well as a Serie B title and a Championship winners' medal made no mistake from the spot as he lashed home the crucial spot-kick. The 37-year-old climbed off the bench to play a decisive role in the victory after Ciaran Diver equalised, following Tranent taking the lead through a Harry Girdwood header in the first half. Tranent were reduced to ten men with 13 minutes left to play as Scott Gray was shown a second yellow card. Read more: With the scores tied after 90 minutes, the final would go to penalties with Burgh perfect from the spot. Dean Brett fired his penalty over the bar with Luke Scullion saving Tranent's third penalty from Euan Bauld. Diver, Fraser Mullen, Ross Davidson and Lafferty were on target for Burgh to win the cup, and spark wild celebrations as supporters raced onto the Broadwood pitch. Lafferty said on BBC Alba after the cup victory: "You always want to get to finals, no matter what standard you are in. "When I first signed for the club, that was the first thing they said to me: 'We need to win the Scottish Cup, that is the cup we want'. "It's been a long, long time since they've been to the final, never mind winning it."

Ex-Liverpool chief outlines key detail as second Florian Wirtz bid rejected
Florian Wirtz is at the top of Liverpool's list of transfer targets but their first two bids for the German star have fallen short of Bayer Leverkusen's valuation Former Liverpool CEO Peter Moore has suggested the Reds will be looking to offload players to raise money before upping their bid for Florian Wirtz. Bayer Leverkusen have knocked back two bids for Germany star Wirtz, the second of which could have seen Liverpool pay north of £100million including add-ons. Wirtz has emerged as a major target as Arne Slot looks to add further quality to his Premier League winning squad. The Reds look to have fought off the challenge of Bayern Munich to install themselves as frontrunners, but they're still some way from Leverkusen's valuation of their star man. Moore, who was CEO between 2017 and 2020, worked with FSG when the owners sold Philippe Coutinho for a nine-figure sum in the same window the club completed a club record deal for Virgil van Dijk. "I think three or four key signings will be critical," he told talkSPORT. "There are going to be some hard decisions on players who are going to have to leave, and if Wirtz is real - I know my owners pretty well - then somebody is going to have to go to a) get the money [back] and b) make room in the payroll salary for that." The Reds have already brought in around £8.4million after allowing Trent Alexander-Arnold to join Real Madrid a few weeks early, but there could be more work to do. Slot's team have already added around £60m of new talent, with Giorgi Mamardashvili and Jeremie Frimpong joining this summer. When it comes to raising funds, though, there are a few contenders to be offloaded. Chief among that number is Caoimhin Kelleher, whose time looks to be up following Mamardashvili's arrival. The Irish international is a target for Brentford, and appears likely to net his club £18m. Darwin Nunez is another who could fetch a significant fee, with interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia, while Barcelona and Al Nassr have their eye on Luis Diaz. If Liverpool do cash in on Colombia star Diaz, they can expect to turn a profit on a player who cost them north of £40m when he joined from Porto in 2022. Over the weekend, Diaz's partner Gera Ponce prompted speculation over the forward's future with an Instagram post. "To the incredible Liverpool fans. From the first day we arrived, we felt first hand what it means to be a part of this club. "We knew the slogan was 'You'll Never Walk Alone', but to hear them sing it with so much passion, support us every moment and show such unconditional love... confirmed to us that here you never walk alone," she wrote. "This fan doesn't just support, it feels. And what you have made my boyfriend and our entire family feel is something we carry in our souls. "Thank you for so much love, for so much dedication and for making us feel at home. Being a part of this fan is a privilege. There's no doubt: they're the best in the world. This is a real bond, deep and strong, that reaffirms that we'll never walk alone." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
