Wales 3-0 Liechtenstein: Craig Bellamy's side remain unbeaten after comfortable win

Wales Onlinea day ago

Wales kept up their unbeaten start to their World Cup qualifying campaign with a straightforward 3-0 win over Liechtenstein in Cardiff.
Ahead of Monday's clash with top seeds Belgium, Wales ultimately made light work of their Goup J opponents with a professional performance at the Cardiff City Stadium. Quickfire second-half goals from Harry Wilson and Kieffer Moore sealed the win after Joe Rodon had opened the scoring before the break.
Craig Bellamy had admitted ahead of the match that he'd been having sleepless nights ahead of facing a tiny principality that had not won a competitive game in five years.
On the night when Belgium started their own World Cup qualifying campaign with a 1-1 draw against North Macedonia in Skopje, simply maintaining his unbeaten start to life as Wales manager with three points against the minnows would be enough for Bellamy.
"Win the game," he said in the week. "That is it."
12 months to the day from a goalless draw against Gibraltar towards the end of Rob Page's reign, few Welsh fans would blame him for that attitude.
Unsurprisingly, the man who had lost sleep over the world's 205th side lived every kick in the early exchanges.
From the off, Wales dominated possession as you would expect.
Wanting to inject pace into the game from the first whistle, the Wales manager had his head in his hands after one quick free-kick was pedantically pulled back.
Wilson had an early effort sail off-target, before Neco Williams could only find the arms of goalkeeper Benjamin Buchel with a shot from outside the box.
Just three of Liechtenstein's squad in Cardiff are professional, with Swiss-based goalkeeper Buchel one of them.
That shone through on the fair occasions in the opening exchanges when Wales tested him, with the goalkeeper denying Moore and Brennan Johnson with smart stops.
However, clear-cut chances in the early part of the first-half were few and far between. While Sorba Thomas continually had the beating of Livio Meier on the left, finding a killer ball proved more difficult.
Wales' advantage on that side of the pitch was dealt a blow when Williams was stretchered off after 20 minutes after twisting his ankle after trying to pick out a team-mate in the box.
Far from what it meant on the night, the connotations of what it meant ahead of Monday's clash with Belgium were clear to see as the 24-year-old shook his head while being wheeled off.
Corners proved to be a source of strong chances. Ben Davies and Moore went close with headers, while Ethan Ampadu had a speculative overhead kick that required a desperate scramble from Buchel after it took a deflection.
Connor Roberts did manage to get the ball in the net as the first-half wore on, only for the goal to be chalked off for offside.
In the end though, the breakthrough would come six minutes before the break. Another pinpoint corner found the head of Rodon, with the centre-back making no mistake from close range.
As the first-half drew to a close, Thomas continued to be Wales' biggest threat - with Wales peppering the box in search of a second before the break.
However, a wild effort from Ampadu would be as close as they got.
In an effort to deal with Thomas' marauding runs, Liechtenstein made a change, bringing on Kenny Kindle for Meier.
It didn't work. Within three minutes of the restart, Kindle was in the referee's book for hacking down Thomas after he's gone past him with ease.
Despite the problems that Thomas was causing the fresh Kindle on the left, it was the other wing that produced Wales' two best chances in the opening minutes of the second-half.
First, a neat one-two with Roberts allowed Johnson to get in behind, but Moore didn't gamble on his teasing ball across the box when a goal looked certain.
Minutes later, Johnson again found Moore from out wide, but the striker's header at the back-post was off-target.
Perhaps fittingly, the next goal would come from the left - even if it came moments after Thomas had been replaced.
After substitute Lewis Koumas retrieved possession, Jay Dasilva whipped in a cross from the left for Wilson to head past Buchel.
Minutes later, Wales had their third. Another cross from the left found David Brooks at the back-post.
His effort was saved, but the rebound fell to Moore who made no mistake from close range.
With the away side tiring, Wales nearly had a fourth - but Buchel was equal to Brooks' effort.
Brooks would go closest again with a couple of half-chances, but it mattered little in the end as Wales did exactly what Bellamy had asked. Win.

6 surging Rangers transfer headlines that go beyond Coady and Turgeman as £20m vision faces strict timeline

Russell Martin and sporting director Kevin Thelwell are scouring the globe for new recruits New Rangers boss Russell Martin is looking to add some new talent to the Ibrox dressing room before pre-season kicks off. That gives sporting director Kevin Thelwell until June 23 to snap up some new talent - with Conor Coady and Dor Turgerman on the agenda. ‌ Negotiations have started with Leicester City over a potential deal to bring in experience Coady - while rising talent Turgerman has opened the door to a move by admitting he is ready to leave Maccabi Tel Aviv. ‌ But with the American revolution in full flow at Ibrox, CEO Patrick Stewart has promised Martin he'll be handed a significant chunk of the £20million set to be injected in the Premiership giants by their new owners.. So, who else could be coming in? And who could be shown the door? Record Sport takes a look. Metinho Troyes' midfielder Metinho has caught Rangers' eye after a successful loan at FC Basel last term. But the Light Blues' face a battle to land the £5million-rated star as they prepare for his signature with the Swiss champions - who are looking to make the deal permanent despite not holding an option to buy. BaZ report it is "unclear" if Basel will be able to secure a return and meeting the valuation - leaving the door open for a move to Ibrox. Largie Ramazani Reports in Spain suggest Leeds United's Largie Ramazani is a target for the Light Blues' this summer - just a year on from his £10million move to Elland Road from Almeria. And former Leeds' goalkeeper Paul Robinson has urged the club to cut their losses with the winger, telling MOT Leeds News:" He's struggled to get in the side this season and I think at times, to his detriment, he's been an impact player off the bench. And I think that's maybe how the manager sees him. ‌ "And if they can get better than what they've got, which is what they have to do to stay in the Premier League, he could be one that's allowed to leave. 'He had a little spell of games, didn't he, in the Championship, but didn't play regularly, week in and week out. And he may be one where Leeds need to cut their cloth accordingly. He may be one that's allowed to move on.' Cyriel Dessers The striker has already revealed he has interest from Greece this summer - but while on international duty he has set himself the goal of scoring more for Rangers. ‌ When asked about his lack of recent caps for Nigeria, he said: 'I'm not the one making the choices. So, the only thing I can do is to perform well and score goals at my club … to ensure that I'm ready to be called up. 'Once I'm called upon, I should be able to show what I can do for the team. That I would have to do with goals, hard work and dedication,' ‌ Nedim Bajrami Nedim Bajrami will hope to impress his new boss when he returns for pre-season - with Record Sport understanding the Albanian is keen to stay in Glasgow and fight for his place in the team. After a disappointing first season in Scotland, reports in Albania suggest that clubs in Germany and Italy are on alert for a potential deal. Harry Darling He has already been signed twice by Russell Martin at MK Dons and then for Swansea City - but Record Sport understands Rangers are currently not in the race for his signature as his contract ticks down. Director of football Richard Montague says Swansea remains hopeful Harry Darling will sign a new deal with the club - despite reports that Norwich City are leading the race for the soon-to-be free agent. ‌ He told Wales Online: 'The ball is very much in Harry's court. "We made him what we thought was a very strong offer and I believe he would think is a very strong offer. Jamie Vardy It would be a landmark signing for the new owners - and Rangers are said to be among the club chasing Jamie Vardy after his Leicester City exit. ‌ The signing race for the 38-year-old appears to have lost a club - with Wrexham transfer consultant Les Reed telling the i: "Let's take an equivalent of Jamie Vardy. "Everyone thinks he's out of contract, there's no transfer fee, Wrexham could do that. You're talking about players who are on £140,000 a week. "We are a million miles away from that. There is a certain level of Premier League player who, if they are on £100k to 150k-a-week, are still going to get closer to that if they move to the MLS or Saudi Arabia than if they go to Wrexham." The Republic of Ireland legend accused the Three Lions of "looking bored" in Barcelona on Saturday. 3 Roy Keane laid into England's 'poor' attitude in their limp 1-0 World Cup qualifying win over Andorra 3 Thomas Tuchel was also left concerned by England's efforts England made it three wins out of three for Thomas Tuchel, who hasn't conceded a goal yet, but their performance left a lot to be desired. After a dreary first half, which saw England booed off, Harry Kane found a breakthrough by tapping in Noni Madueke's cross. That ended up as the only goal in the entire 93 minutes as Tuchel's players were accused of playing "walking football" by Keane's ITV co-panellist Karen Carney against the minnows. Keane, 53, was also critical of Kane's post-match assessment which included the captain saying, "We take the points and move on." "We defend the players, say it's the end of the season and talk about the hot conditions, and Kane looked shattered. "I worry when I see players getting bored. It's Andorra - go and get some more goals! Tuchel has since seemingly agreed, saying that England "played with fire". Andorra v England match played in near empty stadium The German boss said: "I didn't like the attitude how we ended the game, not the whole game, it's a big difference. "I liked the attitude in the first 25 minutes, but I didn't like the last half an hour. We lacked the seriousness and urgency needed in a World Cup qualifier. "We played with fire and I didn't like the attitude at the end. I didn't like the body language, and I don't think it's what the occasion needed." Tuchel also told Three Lions fans their vile chants about Prime Minister Keir Starmer were "not acceptable." Some of the travelling supporters called Starmer a "c**t", "w**ker" and "nonce", as well as singing "no surrender" during the national anthem in a reference to the IRA. The RCDE stadium, home of Spanish side Espanyol, looked noticeably empty during the match. Sparse pockets of fans spread across the stands in Barcelona with just shy of 7,000 tickets sold to England fans for the match inside the 40,000-seat stadium.
