Seattle light rail service will shut over weekend, shuttles offered
The Brief
There will be some service disruptions to a portion of the 1 Line over the weekend.
A shuttle service will plug the service gap in the area between SODO and Capitol Hill.
This is the fourth and final shut down of its kind for this round of improvements.
SEATTLE - Light rail riders in Seattle will again have a weekend of disruptions to navigate. However, there is good news.
Sound Transit has been doing weekend shut-downs to prepare for 2 Line integration and improving infrastructure at the UW Station. The Sound Transit schedule page shows this to be the last weekend of such closures for this project.
What's next
From Friday, Feb. 14 through Sunday, Feb. 16, shuttle buses will replace service between Capitol Hill and SODO.
The shuttles will run every 10-15 minutes, according to Sound Transit. Train service will continue from Lynnwood to Capitol Hill and SODO to Angle Lake every 15 minutes.
What they're saying
This weekend's disruption will "allow for the completion of tie-in work that will connect the 1 Line and 2 Lines as well as work to repair overhead power at the UW Station," according to the Sound Transit project page.

Ms Rachel says she'll risk career to advocate for children in Gaza
Ms Rachel, the children's entertainer and educator whose YouTube videos have been watched by millions of families around the world, said she is willing to risk her career to keep advocating for suffering children in Gaza. In an interview with WBUR, a Boston-based public radio station, Ms Rachel, whose full name is Rachel Griffin Accurso, said she had received pushback for speaking out to raise awareness of the situation in Gaza, where more than 54,000 people have been killed in Israel's ongoing military assault. But Accurso said she would continue to advocate for children's safety. Related: Gaza's youngest influencer aged 11 among children killed by Israeli strikes 'I wouldn't be Ms Rachel if I didn't deeply care about all kids. And I would risk everything, and I will risk my career over and over to stand up for them. It's all about the kids for me,' Accurso told WBUR. The UN has described Gaza as 'the hungriest place on Earth', and warned that the Palestinian territory's entire population is at risk of famine. Accurso said she had recently met with Palestinian women whose children were suffering in Gaza. 'When you sit with a mother who's FaceTiming her boys in Gaza who don't have food, and you see that anguish and you are there with her, it really moves you – I'm sorry to get emotional – to do everything you can for her,' she said. 'And of course, you say: 'I need to do more. What can I do to help?' I do have a big platform, and I look at it as a responsibility.' In April, a pro-Israel group urged the US attorney general to investigate Accurso over her messaging about children suffering in Gaza, and Accurso has been criticized by rightwing media and commentators. Asked about the criticism, Accurso said: 'It's really painful. And I have to remind myself that people don't know my heart, and people try to tell you who you are, but you know who you are. And I know how deeply and equally I care for all children, and I do lean on my faith in that situation. 'I care so deeply about every child. As a teacher, you have children from many different places, especially in New York City, and you care exactly the same about them. That's the basis of everything for me, is that children are equal, that they all deserve everything they need to thrive.' Accurso said in May 2024 that she had faced 'bullying' after launching a fundraiser for children in Gaza, Sudan, Ukraine and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In April of this year, Accurso donated $1m to World Food Program USA, which provides meals for starving people in Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen and 11 other impoverished countries, after the Trump administration said it would end funding to the program.

UN warns of surge in acute malnutrition among Gaza's young children
More than 2,700 children below the age of five in Gaza have been diagnosed with acute malnutrition, marking a steep increase in the number of children suffering from the serious medical condition since screening in February, the United Nations reports. Of almost 47,000 under-fives screened for malnutrition in the second half of May, 5.8 percent (or 2,733 children) were found to be suffering from acute malnutrition, 'almost triple the proportion of children diagnosed with malnutrition' three months earlier, the UN said on Thursday. The number of children with severe acute malnutrition requiring admission to hospital also increased by around double in May compared with earlier months, according to the report by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). According to data from the Nutrition Cluster cited by OCHA, more than 16,500 children below the age of five have been detected and treated for severe acute malnutrition in Gaza since January, including 141 children with complications requiring hospitalisation. Despite the increase in children suffering serious malnutrition and requiring hospitalisation, 'there are currently only four stabilisation centres for the treatment of [severe acute malnutrition] with medical complications in the Gaza Strip,' the OCHA report states. 'Stabilisation centres in North Gaza and Rafah have been forced to suspend operations, leaving children in these areas without access to lifesaving treatment,' it UN's latest warning on the health of young children in Gaza comes as the Palestinian territory's entire population deals with starvation, and the World Health Organization (WHO) warned that the enclave's 'health system is collapsing'. Issuing an appeal for the 'urgent protection' of two of Gaza's last remaining hospitals, the WHO said the 'Nasser Medical Complex, the most important referral hospital left in Gaza, and Al-Amal Hospital are at risk of becoming non-functional'. 'The relentless and systematic decimation of hospitals in Gaza has been going on for too long. It must end immediately,' the WHO said in a statement. 'WHO calls for urgent protection of Nasser Medical Complex and Al-Amal Hospital to ensure they remain accessible, functional and safe from attacks and hostilities,' it said. 'Patients seeking refuge and care to save their lives must not risk losing them trying to reach hospitals.' UN experts, medical officials in Gaza, as well as medical charities, have long accused Israeli forces of deliberately targeting health workers and medical facilities in Gaza in what has been described as a deliberate attempt to make conditions of life unliveable for the Palestinian population in the Strip.
