Hyderabad: Health minister
Damodar Raja Narasimha
on Monday warned of serious action against '
ghost faculty
' in private medical colleges in the state. Noting that doctors of Telangana have a good reputation globally, he stated that such actions would lead to the deterioration of the standards of medical education in the state.
He was speaking at a review meeting with the management, deans, and principals of private medical colleges in the presence of senior department officials.
"If the quality standards in medical education decline, it will endanger the lives of the people. The govt will be very strict in this matter. We will take strict action against colleges that do not comply with the quality standards," the minister said.
Asking the officials concerned to pay stipends on time, the minister warned of strict action against colleges if they harass students in the name of additional fee or advance payment.
Moreover, he said that provisions of the Clinical Establishment Act must be followed in teaching hospitals affiliated with colleges. He assured colleges that the issues raised by them regarding NMC regulations would be brought to its attention with an approach to resolve them soon.

HC quashes govt. order on collection of fees from medical interns

The Kerala High Court has set aside the State government's order imposing internship fee on foreign medical graduates for doing their compulsory rotatory medical Internship (CRMI) in government hospitals. Justice N. Nagaresh passed the order recently while allowing writ petitions filed by students who completed their medical degree courses in countries such as Russia, Bulgaria, the Philippines, and Guyana. According to the petitioners, no fees can be collected from the foreign medical graduates in light of the circular of the National Medical Commission. The government was collecting ₹5,000 a month as fees. The court observed that when the National Medical Commission (NMC) Act mandated payment of stipends to medical interns for their services, the State government was not justified in imposing internship fees on them.

Govt axes diet contractor over food poisoning incident at IMH

Hyderabad: Taking serious note of a food poisoning incident that has already claimed one life, the State Government has terminated the services of the diet contractor at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) in Erragadda, Hyderabad. During the Telangana Formation Day celebrations on Monday, June 2, sweets distributed to inmates at IMH resulted in a significant food poisoning outbreak, affecting 92 individuals and leading to one fatality. The hospital's Non-DC ward, where the sweets were served, experienced a rapid increase in reports of nausea, vomiting, and discomfort. A total of 74 patients remained under observation at IMH, while 18 were transferred to Osmania General Hospital for further treatment. Hospital officials reported that the patients are in a stable condition. Health Minister Damodar Raja Narasimha visited IMH on Wednesday to assess the situation and inquire about the care being provided to the affected patients. He stated that the victims are receiving improved medical care and that the health status of all individuals who became ill is currently stable. Eighteen of the more severely ill patients have been transferred to Osmania Hospital. Six medical teams, including those from Gandhi and Osmania Hospitals, are overseeing the care of the remaining patients. Doctors reassured that the patients' conditions are not life-threatening, and they expect them to make a recovery within the next two days, as shared by Raja Narasimha. The Minister announced the formation of a committee to investigate the incident, affirming that appropriate actions will be taken against those found responsible once the report is submitted. He also mentioned that a case has been filed at the local police station concerning the incident, and authorities are still in the process of identifying the deceased.

Mayo sends 2 Covid samples to Neeri for genome sequencing

1 2 Nagpur: Days after two patients with comorbidities died at a private and a govt hospital recently, Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH) forwarded samples of two Covid patients for genome sequencing to Neeri lab on Wednesday. IGGMCH officials said these samples belong to their employees who tested positive and have recovered. No new Covid case was reported on Tuesday and the city now has only two active Covid patients who are under home isolation. The NMC too is likely to send samples of the two recent Covid victims for genome sequencing. NMC medical officer (health) Dr Deepak Selokar told TOI that all health workers have been kept on alert and testing would be scaled up if needed. "Samples of influenza-like illness (ILI) patients are collected and sent to medical colleges for testing. But currently there is no surge of ILI patients. We had just 10 Covid cases in May and two active patients at present," he said. Dr Selokar added that the deceased patients had underlying health conditions, yet it was decided to consider such mortalities as Covid deaths if the tests are positive. She started showing symptoms of respiratory infection, and hence her sample was taken, which tested positive. Accordingly, we updated the deaths on the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) portal," he said. Dr Sunita Sharma, Director General of Health Services, held a review meeting with representatives of Disaster Management Cell, Emergency Management Response Cell, National Centre for Disease Control, Indian Council of Medical Research, IDSP, and Central Government Hospitals in Delhi, along with representatives from all states and UTs, to evaluate the current Covid-19 situation and preparedness measures. The participants concurred that most cases are mild and managed under home care. Forty-four Covid deaths have been reported since January this year primarily among individuals with pre-existing illnesses. State and district surveillance units under IDSP are closely monitoring ILI and severe acute respiratory illness (SARI) patients. Testing is recommended for all hospitalised SARI cases and 5% of ILI cases as per guidelines. Positive SARI samples are sent for whole genome sequencing through the ICMR-VRDL network.
