Hastings couple charged with manslaughter in fire deaths of woman, child in Dutchess Airbnb
A Hastings-on-Hudson couple pleaded not guilty this week following their indictments in the deaths of a Massachusetts school teacher and her 1-year-old daughter in a fire last fall in the couple's Airbnb rental in Dutchess County.
Meredith Darcy, 55, and Dennis Darcy, 57, were charged with second-degree manslaughter, accused of recklessly causing the deaths of Shannon Hubbard and her daughter Maggie in the Oct. 13, 2024, fire at the home on Clinton Landing Road in Clinton.
State police said that an investigation determined that the home "was not properly equipped with functional smoke detectors, in violation of New York State fire, building, and residential codes."
The fire was not deliberately set and was believed to have started in a chimney flue, state police said.
Patricia Gunning, a New City lawyer representing the couple, said the Darcys were "absolutely devastated" by what happened, but she suggested the homicide charge was an overreach by prosecutors.
"We sharply disagree with the conclusions made by the District Attorney's Office," Gunning said Thursday night. "My clients steadfastly maintain there were smoke detectors in the home and would never have knowingly put another family in danger."
She said the couple regularly stayed in the home with their two children, including a week before the fire.
Hubbard, 35, and her husband, John, a Dennis, Massachusetts, police officer, rented the house and were staying there with Maggie and their 3-year-old son. They lived in Brewster, Massachusetts, and Shannon Hubbard was a teacher at Chatham Elementary School in Chatham, Massachusetts.
The fire broke out at about 10:30 p.m. The Hubbards smelled smoke while they were on the patio.
John Hubbard called 911, while Shannon Hubbard went inside to get their sleeping children. John Hubbard also tried to rescue the children, but was unsuccessful. Firefighters got Shannon Hubbard and the children out of the home, but mother and daughter died from their injuries.
Dutchess County District Attorney Anthony Parisi said in a statement that the fire was preventable and that "we must commit to ensuring that no other family faces this same devastating fate."
"The deaths of Shannon Hubbard and her young daughter in this senseless fire serve as a tragic reminder of the critical role smoke detectors play in safeguarding lives," Parisi said. "Their absence was not only a failure of the necessary safety measures; the Grand Jury concluded, the Defendants were aware of and deliberately ignored the significant and unjustifiable risk of death that this absence created."
Dutchess Judge Michael Hayes set bail at $50,000 cash, $100,000 bond or $200,000 partially secured bond. Gunning said her clients were released after posting bail. They are due back in court on April 7.

Two teens arrested after deadly shooting at Columbia, South Carolina Airbnb
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WJBF) — A shooting at an Airbnb in Columbia, South Carolina, left one teenager dead and three others hospitalized. At a news conference Sunday afternoon, authorities said the shooting happened around 5:15 a.m. Friday. Officers were patrolling the Elmwood Park neighborhood when they got a call about a possible break-in. That call quickly escalated to reports of shots fired — and then to someone being shot. When officers got to the home on Lincoln Street, they forced their way in after hearing screams inside. 'They immediately encountered an incredibly chaotic scene with multiple victims,' Columbia Police Chief Skip Holbrook said. 'Four young people shot multiple times.' Eighteen-year-old Jayden Cavon Brackens died at the scene. 'He died from multiple gunshot wounds and nothing else,' Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford said. 'Please be mindful of what you post on social media. His mom, his family, his community. They're reading these posts that you're putting out that contain false information.' The three other victims — two 18-year-olds and a 17-year-old — are still in the hospital. All are from the Columbia area. Police described the scene inside the Airbnb as devastating. 'This shooting crime scene can only be described as a war zone,' Holbrook said. 'The level of destruction caused by the gun and the gunfire was really just indescribable.' More than 30 shell casings were found from multiple weapons, including an assault-style rifle. So far, two arrests have been made. A 15-year-old male is facing charges including armed robbery and possession of a weapon during a crime. An 18-year-old has been charged with murder, three counts of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, and more. His full name was not released. Police are still looking for a third suspect, another 15-year-old boy. 'We anticipate additional charges and additional arrests,' Holbrook said. 'This investigation is advancing rapidly and effectively.' Cornerstone Properties owns the house where the shooting happened and was being rented as an Airbnb. Police have issued a notice of intent to declare the property a public nuisance. 'The owner has been ordered to cease operations of the Airbnb immediately,' Holbrook added. 'They've been 100% cooperative.' Some neighbors say they've long had concerns about short-term rentals in the area. Holbrook said that's a separate issue that the city's code enforcement division may address. As for motive, police say it's still unclear. 'We have some working theories,' Holbrook said. 'But we do not have a motive that we're in a position to speak on with certainty.' Anyone with information is asked to contact Columbia Police or call Crime Stoppers. Karoline Leavitt rips Van Hollen, media for portrayal of Kilmar Abrego Garcia
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt called out Democrats and the media for defending illegal immigrant and suspected MS-13 member Kilmar Abrego Garcia Friday. Abrego Garcia, who was deported in March to an El Salvador mega prison, was returned to the U.S. Friday to answer federal charges for human smuggling and conspiracy. 'The Justice Department's Grand Jury Indictment against Abrego Garcia proves the unhinged Democrat Party was wrong, and their stenographers in the Fake News Media were once again played like fools,' Leavitt said in a statement to Fox News. 'Abrego Garcia was never an innocent 'Maryland Man'– Abrego Garcia is an illegal alien terrorist, gang member, and human trafficker who has spent his entire life abusing innocent people, especially women and the most vulnerable,' Leavitt added. She also called out Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., who traveled to El Salvador in April 'to show solidarity' with Abrego Garcia. 'Abrego Garcia will now return to the United States to answer for his crimes and meet the full force of American justice,' Leavitt said. 'The Democrat lawmakers, namely Democrat Senator Chris Van Hollen, and every single so-called 'journalist' who defended this illegal criminal abuser must immediately apologize to Garcia's victims. The Trump Administration will continue to hold criminals accountable to the fullest extent of the law.' 4 White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt called out Democrats and the media for defending suspected MS-13 member Kilmar Abrego Garcia. According to Abrego Garcia's indictment, he played a 'significant role' in a human smuggling ring operating for nearly a decade, and Bondi described him as a full-time smuggler who made more than 100 trips, transporting women, children and MS-13 gang-affiliated persons throughout the United States. Fox News Digital obtained Tennessee Highway Patrol bodycam footage from a 2022 traffic stop where troopers pulled over Abrego Garcia for speeding. Inside his vehicle were eight other men, raising immediate suspicions. 'He's hauling these people for money,' one trooper said. Law enforcement found $1,400 in cash and flagged Abrego Garcia in the National Crime Information Center, which returned a gang/terrorism alert. ICE was called, but never responded. Despite Abrego Garcia's alleged illegal activity, various media outlets continued to refer to him as a 'Maryland man' Friday, including the Washington Post and the New York Times. Fox News contributor Guy Benson shared a screenshot of their Breaking News alerts using the phrase. Axios and USA TODAY referred to him as a 'Maryland man' or 'Maryland father' on social media.
