Rugby-England to play Spain and France in World Cup warm-up matches

The Star07-05-2025

(Reuters) -World Cup hosts England will play two warm-up matches against Spain and France in August before the tournament begins, the governing Rugby Football Union (RFU) said on Wednesday.
The Six Nations champions and two-times World Cup winners will host Spain in Leicester on August 2 and then travel to take on France in Mont-de-Marsan a week later.
Spain will appear at their first World Cup since 2017 after winning the WXV 3 tournament last year, while France will be aiming to reach their first final of the tournament having finished third on seven occasions.
England last won the World Cup in 2014 and have reached the final in all-but-one of the previous nine editions. The Red Roses will go in as strong favourites having won all 25 matches since losing the last final to New Zealand in 2022.
France pushed England hard in the recent Six Nations, with England clinching the Grand Slam on the final day in a thrilling 43-42 win over the French at Twickenham to claim championship victory for the seventh successive time.
The World Cup begins on August 22 with England playing the United States in Sunderland. Samoa and Australia are with them in Pool A.

Piastri wins in Spain with McLaren 1-2

Formula One championship leader Oscar Piastri forged 10 points clear in the title battle with today's win. (AP pic) BARCELONA : Formula One championship leader Oscar Piastri won the Spanish Grand Prix from pole position in a McLaren one-two today to forge 10 points clear of teammate Lando Norris in the title battle. The Australian's win, by 2.4 seconds, was his fifth in nine races this season and McLaren's seventh. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc completed the podium after passing Max Verstappen's Red Bull six laps from the end following a safety car period that triggered the main talking point of the afternoon with the champion demoted from fifth to 10th. 'It's a nice way to bounce back from Monaco. A superb weekend,' said Piastri, who finished third last weekend in a race won from pole by Norris. Verstappen, who made four stops in total and ended up on the slower hard tyres against rivals on softs, collided with Leclerc and twice with Mercedes' George Russell after the safety car restart. The angry Dutch driver was given a 10-second penalty added to his overall time for the second Russell collision that was clearly his fault. He and Leclerc also faced a post-race investigation for their clash that could lead to further sanctions. 'I tried to push him to the left, there was a bit of contact but fortunately no consequences,' said Leclerc. Verstappen claimed the Monegasque had rammed into him and should have given back the place. Russell finished fourth after eventually being let through by Verstappen, who reluctantly did as his team told him. Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg finished a surprising and morale-boosting fifth for the future Audi team after passing Ferrari's seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton on the penultimate lap. Hamilton was a disappointing sixth, Isack Hadjar seventh for Racing Bulls and Pierre Gasly eighth for Renault-owned Alpine. First points Home hero Fernando Alonso scored his first points of the season with Aston Martin, who had only one car on the grid due to Lance Stroll's withdrawal through injury after yesterday's qualifying. Piastri led away cleanly at the start with Verstappen seizing second from Norris while Hamilton and Leclerc moved up to fourth and fifth as Russell lost out. Hamilton let Leclerc through on lap 10 of 66 after the two Ferraris had run nose to tail. Norris took back second place from Verstappen on Lap 13, the Dutch driver making no attempt to defend against the quicker McLaren and pitting in the next lap for fresh tyres. Verstappen took the lead again on Lap 23 after Piastri pitted, with Norris making his first stop on Lap 21 and coming out behind the Red Bull, but that lasted only until Verstappen pitted for a second time on Lap 30. He came in for a third stop on Lap 47 but Norris pitted the lap after to defend second place. A safety car deployment on Lap 55, after Italian rookie Kimi Antonelli beached his Mercedes in the gravel, bunched up the field and triggered a rash of stops. The McLarens came in together for fresh tyres, double-stacking, and resumed ahead of Verstappen who questioned the switch to a set of hards but was told that was the only option available.

Piastri on pole as McLaren sweep front row in Spain

The pole was the Australian's (centre) fourth in nine races so far this season. (AP pic) BARCELONA : Formula One championship leader Oscar Piastri seized pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix on Saturday with teammate and title rival Lando Norris completing a McLaren front row sweep. Red Bull's Max Verstappen, last year's winner, qualified third fastest in the same time as Mercedes' George Russell, who will start fourth because the reigning champion finished his lap first. Piastri had led the final shootout with a lap of one minute and 11.836 seconds but Norris then made the most of an aerodynamic tow to go quicker by 0.017 as stricter front wing flex tests made no difference to McLaren's speed. Norris, winner in Monaco last Sunday to close the gap at the top to three points, managed to improve his time only to 1:11.755 before Piastri clinched pole with a final effort of 1:11.546 around the Circuit de Catalunya. The pole was the Australian's fourth in nine races so far this season. 'It wasn't the perfect lap but I think around here with the tyres going off so much through the lap it's very tough to do that,' said Piastri. 'I'm very happy with all the work we've put in.' Norris said he had the pace but made a couple of small mistakes. 'A good result for the team, a nice one-two and an interesting start for tomorrow,' said the Briton. Seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton qualified fifth for Ferrari with Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli sixth. Charles Leclerc was seventh for Ferrari, doing only one flying lap, with Alpine's Pierre Gasly eighth and Isack Hadjar ninth for Racing Bulls. Spain's double world champion Fernando Alonso completed the top 10 for Aston Martin in front of his home crowd.

Marc Marquez wins sprint to extend lead in title race

Marc Marquez has won the Aragon MotoGP six times in 10 appearances. (EPA Images pic) ALCANIZ : Spanish motorcycling great Marc Marquez maintained his dominance of the sprint races this season by winning the Aragon leg today for his seventh victory out of the eight raced. The 32-year-old Ducati rider extended his lead in the overall standings over his younger brother Alex (Ducati-Gresini), who finished second. Marc leads Alex by 27 points. Marc Marquez, who has won the Aragon MotoGP six times in 10 appearances, was headed by his brother at the first corner but passed him at the halfway stage and eased home. 'I had a problem at the start,' explained Marc Marquez. 'My plan had been to lead from the start and open up a big lead but for the first three laps I really had to push to get back at Alex. 'When I did get ahead I had to take care of my rear tyre. 'In the end everything went perfectly today.' Rookie Fermin Aldeguer of Ducati-Gresini finished third to make it an all-Spanish podium. Both Marquez brothers will start on the front row of the grid in tomorrow's MotoGP – the eighth of 22 Grand Prix – Marc having taken pole earlier today. Italy's Franco Morbidelli (Ducati-VR46), who finished fourth in the sprint, fills the front row places. Morbidelli's compatriot two-time world champion Francesco Bagnaia was the big loser, starting from fourth spot Marc Marquez's teammate could only finish 12th, and is 84 points adrift of the Spaniard in the standings. Marquez is seeking to end a three-race losing run, having got off to a blistering start with three wins in the first four MotoGPs.
