How bad was Spurs v United in comparison to other European club finals?

The Guardian22-05-2025

The attacking talents on show for both Italian sides were frightening. Juventus partnered David Trezeguet in attack with Alessandro Del Piero, while Milan opted for Pippo Inzaghi and Andriy Shevchenko in front of the creativity of Andrea Pirlo, Clarence Seedorf and Rui Costa. Such was the embarrassment of riches available to manager Carlo Ancelotti, Rivaldo was an unused sub. Yet after 120 minutes, the final remained goalless. Marcello Lippi, who had succeeded Ancelotti as Juve manager in 2001, was particularly culpable, having brought on the defensively minded Antonio Conte as a makeshift No 10 at half-time. How they missed the suspended Pavel Nedved. Milan prevailed in the shootout, with Paolo Maldini lifting the trophy at Old Trafford, but the final did nothing to dispel the belief that Italian football is a defensive game.
A goal of exquisite beauty punctuated an otherwise drab affair as Radamel Falcao earned victory for André Villas Boas's side, a triumph that would contribute to the Portuguese manager moving to Chelsea later that summer. Falcao's looping header from a brilliant Fredy Guarín cross was the only highlight, with Braga looking only to frustrate their neighbours before conceding and unable to muster any sort of response once they fell behind. Even Villas Boas conceded afterwards his disappointment that the final had 'not been the spectacle' he had envisaged, while the Guardian's Paul Doyle, on liveblogging duties that night, was a little more forthright in his summary of the match: 'Well that was torpid. Nice enough goal to win it, though.'
It is often the way that finals contested by teams from the same nation can be tight, cagey affairs – just look at this list – which is normally due to the finalists knowing each other well and often being concerned about losing to a long-established rival. In this case, it was much more to do with the fact that Spurs and Manchester United were lurching from dreadful domestic seasons, in which both sides lurked just above the Premier League relegation zone. The carrot of Champions League qualification and the stick of derision or potentially someone losing their job probably didn't help in opening up the contest, which was fittingly decided by a dismal Brennan Johnson deflection. Spurs fans won't care about that, or Ange Postecoglou's gameplan, which the Australian admitted afterwards was about 'minimising moments by having a strong foundation' – manager-speak for putting 10 men behind the ball for almost the entire second half.
The fairytale of Nottingham Forest winning their first European Cup under Brian Clough often seems to omit how the final against the Swedish club was a drab affair. In an age where back passes to the keeper were common, especially in tight and important matches decided by the odd goal, it was a game heavy on offsides and stoppages. Forest had thrilled many en route to the final, including in a 4-1 win over Grasshoppers in the first leg of their quarter-final, and a 3-3 draw with Cologne in the first leg of their semi-final, but a tall, physical Malmö nullified Forest in the final, before Trevor Francis's headed winner, in his first European appearance for the club, mercifully prevented the final from going into extra time. As ever, though, it was Clough who had the last word: 'It wasn't a great game but they were a boring team, Malmö. In fact the Swedes are quite a boring nation. But we still won, so who cares?'
'Two teams with their minds more obviously on correcting the perceived injustices of the past than on winning a match through the sort of expressive football that earned the European Cup its reputation fought each other virtually to a standstill in Milan,' began Richard Williams' match report from San Siro. This was both a disappointing match – a penalty each for Bayern and Valencia sending the game towards, you guessed it, more penalties in a shootout – but also two disappointing performances, particularly for that Valencia side. The La Liga team were appearing in their second successive final, having been thrashed by Real Madrid in the 2000 showpiece a year earlier. Owen Hargreaves did such a good job of negating Pablo Aimar that the Valencia manager, Héctor Cúper, withdrew the Argentinian playmaker at half-time. Ultimately, the Spanish side could not conquer man-of-the-match Oliver Kahn. The goalkeeper saved Mauricio Pellegrino's spotkick in the shootout to give Bayern their fourth European crown.

Man Utd to be dealt big blow with Bruno Fernandes 'surprised' by Marcus Rashford

Marcus Rashford was expected to become a Manchester United legend following his extraordinary first-team breakthrough, however, the forward is expected to leave for good this summer Bruno Fernandes was left stunned by Marcus Rashford 's talent when he first arrived at Manchester United. As Rashford's time with his boyhood club seemingly draws to a close this summer, his captain's comments show just how tragic his departure from Old Trafford will be. The 27-year-old forward had a falling out with Red Devils head coach Ruben Amorim in December of last year, resulting in him being frozen out of the team. He managed to secure a loan move to Aston Villa in January, where he made a positive contribution in the season's final months until a hamstring injury prematurely ended his campaign. ‌ It is understood that Villa have the option to sign the England international permanently for £40million, with his relationship with Amorim thought to be irreparable. However, it remains uncertain whether Unai Emery will risk upsetting Villa's wage structure to match Rashford's reported weekly wage of £325,000 at United. ‌ According to The Sun, Serie A club Inter Milan have now emerged as a possible destination for Rashford as they aim to bounce back from their Champions League final heartbreak last weekend. Inter were thrashed 5-0 by Paris Saint-Germain, a defeat that followed their late-season collapse in the race to win the Scudetto. Club chiefs reportedly believe Rashford could be a crucial signing and would excite supporters. Their view of Rashford was once echoed by current United skipper Fernandes. The Portuguese, merely months after signing for the club in 2020, made it clear both how good Rashford was and how good he could become in the future. Fernandes was asked to assemble his 'perfect player' and selected Rashford's 'pace', indicating just how highly he rated the forward. That's something which will no doubt be frustrating for United fans to hear, as it is a blow that the player will fail to truly reach his lofty potential at Old Trafford. He said in an interview with BT Sport at the time: "I will choose Rashford because I think what Rashford has is pace, amazing pace, but with amazing quality. It's difficult sometimes going at that velocity to have the quality to do the right things, you know. To choose the right time to shoot, to pass, to skill. I will choose Rashy for sure." ‌ Fernandes went on to admit: "He surprised me a lot. Of course I already knew his qualities, because he is one of the best young players in the world for me. I think I will choose Rashy because for me this [pace] is one of the best qualities he has." Rashford, who joined the club as a seven-year-old, showed flashes of world class ability in his 10 seasons in the United first team but far too inconsistently. He only managed to score 20 goals or more across all competitions in three seasons, with those often being followed by mediocre or poor campaigns. During his loan spell at Villa, he scored four goals and provided six assists in 17 matches, having managed to secure a regular starting spot over Ollie Watkins since the Champions League quarter-final ties against PSG. ‌ Sadly for Villa, a contentious refereeing decision on the season's final day against United resulted in them missing out on a Champions League spot for the upcoming season. Whether that will influence Rashford's decision on his future club remains to be seen, as it was previously reported that he favoured a move to Barcelona.

John Obi Mikel reveals if Victor Osimhen will join Man Utd or Arsenal

John Obi Mikel hopes 'there is a door open' for Victor Osimhen at Arsenal this summer, suggesting Manchester United could still land the Nigeria striker despite having no European football on offer next season. Osimhen is set to return to Napoli after a loan spell in Turkey with Galatasaray where he scored 37 goals in 41 appearances. The 26-year-old is not part of Antonio Conte's plans however with the relationship between the Italian champions and their player breaking down during a tumultuous summer transfer window last year. Galatasaray are eager to keep in him Istanbul for another season while Al-Hilal are interested in bringing him to Saudi Arabia. But Osimhen's goal has been and still is to secure a move to the Premier League, according to his countryman Mikel. The former Chelsea midfielder was desperate to see Osimhen move to Stamford Bridge this summer after a move fell apart at the eleventh hour last year. But Liam Delap's imminent arrival in west London from Ipswich Town appears to have ended their interest with the England Under-21 international set to compete with Nicolas Jackson for a starting berth next season. Ruing Chelsea's missed opportunity to bring in an option who can 'hit the ground running', Mikel believes there are two realistic options in Arsenal and United, adamant Ruben Amorim's side need an upgrade on Rasmus Hojlund. 'I hope there is still a Premier League move for him this summer', Mikel told Metro. 'I think the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United, they still need a striker. I don't think [Rasmus] Hojlund is the guy for Manchester United. He runs around and works hard but he is not the guy who will score goals, put them in the top four and win them trophies. So for me Manchester United might be the destination. 'I don't want to see him in Saudi right now because he still has so much to offer in Europe. It would be a shame to see him go there. So maybe Arsenal, United, Juventus and PSG too [are his options]. Let's see what happens.' United's failure to qualify for Europe next season will have financial ramifications but it doesn't appear to have damaged their pull power so far with Matheus Cunha arriving and Bryan Mbeumo prepared to join them over Newcastle United and Arsenal. Osimhen may be a different story having shone on the European stage for Napoli in previous years. While their absence from the Champions League and Europa League may ultimately cost them, Mikel believes there is a chance his countryman could 'sacrifice' a season to help lift United from their malaise. 'I think so,' Mikel said when asked if a lack of European football could derail United's chances of signing Osimhen. 'As the top striker and player I know he is, yes I think that would be a factor. 'Maybe he would say, 'I will give it a season.' Knowing he is in the squad with a few other signings that Ruben Amorim gets in, the players he wants, it is something Victor might consider. Maybe he would think about sacrificing a season. 'We have to wait and see. But I think we want to see him in the Champions League so maybe Arsenal might be the destination. Maybe there is a door open there for Victor. 'I've had a few conversations with him. I won't say much about what those conversations were but he is working to make sure he ends up at a top, top European league where he can showcase his and talent and compete to win the Champions League.' Mikel doesn't hide the fact he was desperate to see his old side bring in Osimhen, a player he believes would provide an instant lift. More Trending 'Everyone knows who I wanted to see come to the football club and who the fans wanted to see come to the football club, Mikel said. 'It is a shame he didn't come to Chelsea, the club he supported as a kid growing up, but they have decided to go in a different direction [signing Delap] which is fine, I hope it works out for him at the club. 'But I would have loved to see someone come in to hit the ground running straight away, who knows how to play in big games, in big competitions who has been there and done it. But we have to support Delap and make sure it works out for him.' John Obi Mikel was speaking ahead of the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup 2025. Watch all 63 games live on DAZN for free. Fisher unsure of future St Johnstone boss Simo Valakari says Andy Fisher 'doesn't know what the future is' ahead of his return to Swansea City this summer. ‌ The 27-year-old joined Saints back in January on a short-term loan deal, and made 18 appearances for the club as they slid out of the Scottish top flight. ‌ Valakari hasn't ruled out the possibility of trying bring Fisher back to McDiarmid Park next term, but is expecting other clubs higher up the food chain to show an interest. Article continues below 'Andy will have other clubs after him, I think, because he did well for us.' Fisher currently has one year left on his current deal at Swansea, and his future remains slightly uncertain, particularly given that Lawrence Vigouroux is likely to remain first choice under Alan Sheehan next term. Milan keen on Modric Italian giants AC Milan are reportedly keen on signing Luka Modric this summer. ‌ The 39-year-old has already confirmed he's set to leave Real Madrid after the upcoming Club World Cup, bringing the curtain down on a trophy-laden 13-year spell at the club. Speculation over his next move has been rumbling away ever since, with reports elsewhere suggesting a possible move to MLS to join Lionel Messi and David Beckham at Inter Miami. Saudi Arabia has also been touted as a possibility, but according to The Athletic, a move to Serie A could yet be on the cards. ‌ It's claimed Milan are 'exploring a deal' for the 2018 Ballon d'Or winner, who is seemingly yet to decide on this next move as a player. An appearance for Croatia at next year's World Cup has already been cited as a target the veteran midfielder may now be working towards, while his recent investment in Swansea City has suggested he is keen on staying in the game once he does eventually hang up his boots. The possibility of pulling on a Swans shirt before he decides to retire appears slim, although it's understood he has already had an impact behind the scenes at the club. For example, sources claim he has already spoken to potential new recruits in a bid to help convince them to join Alan Sheehan's squad. ‌ Russell Martin poised to take Rangers job Former Swansea City boss Russell Martin is reportedly closing in on the job at Rangers. According to Sky Sports, Rangers' new sporting director Kevin Thelwell, CEO Patrick Stewart and the club's new US owners are set to opt for the ex-Southampton boss, who enjoyed a brief loan spell at the club as a player back in 2018. The Scottish giants have spent the last few months searching for a successor Philippe Clement, who was sacked in February, with former captain Barry Ferguson previously taking interim charge. ‌ Former boss Steven Gerrard and ex-Real Madrid assistant Davide Ancelotti were both among the other names believed to be in the frame. However, it seems Martin is now set to make the move to Ibrox, having been out of work since leaving St Mary's in December. Swans confirm third friendly Swansea City have confirmed they will take on League Two side Cheltenham Town in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday, July 23. ‌ It's the third friendly to have been confirmed by the club this summer, with the Swans also set to meet League One Stevenage out in Spain on July 19, before travelling to Exeter City on July 26. It's understood the Swans are still hopeful of confirming continental opposition for their traditional home friendly the week before the start of the season. Article continues below They were initially supposed to take on PSV Eindhoven, but will now have to find fresh opposition after the Dutch side claimed the Eredivisie title, meaning they will now be taking part in the Johan Cruyff Shield against Go Ahead Eagles that weekend.
