
Delhi records highest peak power demand on June 11
Amid soaring temperatures, Delhi recorded its highest peak power demand of this summer on June 11, 2025. The real-time figures of the State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC) showed the peak demand was 8,231 MW at 10.55 pm.
This year, the peak power demand of Delhi is expected to cross 9,000 MW. In 2024, the national capital recorded an all-time high peak demand of 8,656 MW.
Delhi's peak power demand crossed 8,000 MW for the first time in 2023.
A red alert was issued for Delhi as it remained in the grip of an intense heatwave, with temperatures ranging from 40.9 to 45 degrees Celsius across various weather stations on Wednesday (June 11, 2025)
The heat index, a measure of how hot it feels when humidity is factored in, touched an alarming 51.9 degrees Celsius.
At 5.30 pm, Ayanagar was the hottest at 45 degrees Celsius, followed by Palam at 44.5 degrees Celsius, Ridge at 43.6 degrees Celsius, Pitampura at 43.5 degrees Celsius, Lodi Road at 43.4 degrees Celsius, Mayur Vihar at 40.9 degrees Celsius and Safdarjung --the city's base station -- reported 43.3 degrees Celsius.

'Very light rain/thunderstorm accompanied with gusty winds with a speed of 40-50 kmph, temporarily reaching 60 kmph, can be expected. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to settle between 42 and 29 degrees Celsius respectively,' the IMD said. Taking cognisance of the rise in power demand, Delhi Power Minister Ashish Sood on Thursday held a review meeting with senior officials of the Power Department and all three power distribution companies, directing them to strengthen their infrastructure to address the growing electricity load. He said considering the weather forecasts for the coming days, power companies must remain prepared for outages due to natural calamities and the response time for restoration must be minimised to ensure uninterrupted and seamless power supply. Mr. Sood also urged power companies to accelerate efforts in the solar energy sector. 'Given Delhi's rising power demand, it is important to adopt solar energy,' he said.

IMD predicts heavy rainfall to AP and Telangana amid surface circulation
The Indian Meteorological Department has issued alerts regarding significant rainfall across southern Odisha and adjacent areas of North Coast Andhra. In Telangana, on the same day, light rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is expected in isolated areas such as Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Mahabubabad, Warangal, and Hanamkonda. This is the highest-ever load in the city in 2025, said officials. On Wednesday night, the city had clocked 8,231 MW. This is the first time Delhi's peak power demand has crossed 8,000 MW this year. Last year, the city had clocked the highest-ever peak demand on June 25 at 8,647 MW. Delhi has been reeling under intense heat this week. The India Meteorological Department on Wednesday sounded a red alert for heatwave conditions. On preparation to tackle the increase in power load, an official said, 'During the year, BSES discoms have strengthened the network and undertaken several unique measures to ensure a reliable power supply during the summer months. Apart from preventive maintenance, BSES has also done extensive predictive checks to identify hot spots or to pre-determine potential faults and to take remedial measures. An online load monitoring system is also in place to track the power transformers, especially during the summer.' Over 2,100 MW of green power is set to play an important role in ensuring reliable power during summer, the official added. 'This includes around 888 MW of solar power from SECI (Solar Energy Corporation of India), 500 MW of wind power, and 40 MW from Waste-to-Energy. BSES's efforts to ensure reliable power are also being helped by 160 MW+ rooftop solar panels installed on rooftops in South, West, East, and Central Delhi,' the official said.
