Apple is reportedly planning to overhaul its operating system naming convention. The iPhone-maker may move from sequential version numbers to year-based identifiers, as reported by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. According to him, the upcoming iOS update will be called iOS 26 instead of iOS 19, with all other operating systems following suit. The rumour caught the attention of Tesla and SpaceX CEO

'What happens in the year 2100?'.
The change, if implemented, is expected to extend across Apple's entire OS lineup, including macOS, watchOS, and iPadOS. The Cupertino-based company is set to host its annual developer conference, WWDC 2025 on June 9. The upcoming releases will reportedly be branded as iPadOS 26, macOS 26, watchOS 26, tvOS 26, and visionOS 26.

The change aims to bring consistency to Apple's software branding and eliminate confusion among customers and developers. Currently, different operating systems use disparate version numbers—iOS 18 runs alongside watchOS 12, macOS 15, and visionOS 2—because their initial versions didn't launch simultaneously.
Apple's approach mirrors the automotive industry's model year system, using the upcoming year rather than the current one. Since the software will launch in September 2025, it carries the 2026 designation. This strategy echoes Microsoft's Windows 95 and Windows 98 naming convention, as well as Samsung's decision to rebrand its Galaxy S series with year-based numbers starting with the Galaxy S20 in 2020.
iOS 26 what to expect
Apple's rebranding of its operating systems is expected to coincide with a sweeping redesign of software interfaces across its product ecosystem. Internally code-named "Solarium," the update will introduce a more unified user experience across tvOS, watchOS, and parts of visionOS, making it easier for users to transition between devices.
Among the key features rumored to arrive with the new operating systems are live translation for AirPods and Siri, eye-tracking and scrolling capabilities for Vision Pro users, and productivity-focused enhancements for the iPad, aimed at making it function more like a Mac in professional settings.
In a major step toward opening its ecosystem, Apple also plans to give third-party developers access to its artificial intelligence models, enabling broader integration of the technology behind the upcoming Apple Intelligence platform.

Errol Musk calls PM Modi ‘fantastic' leader, hails India's rise as fourth largest GDP

Errol Musk, father of American billionaire Elon Musk, on Monday described PM Modi as a 'fantastic' leader, under whose stewardship India is consistently climbing the ladder to become 'Vishwaguru'. Errol Musk, father of Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, is currently on a visit to India. In an exclusive interaction with IANS, Errol Musk lauded India's rise to prominence under the Modi government and said that the world has a great deal to learn from India. He said that India has already become a world power, and its growing GDP is a sign of its rising stature. 'India is a world power. When you have the fourth-largest GDP in the world, you're a world power, whether you like it or not. India has a very humble approach to these things, which is rather nice, nicer than other places that push themselves. I would say India has a great deal to contribute to the world," he told IANS. When asked about his opinion on PM Modi, Errol Musk said, 'he is a fantastic leader. He is one of the best leaders in the world at the moment. It's always a pleasure to see him on television.' Notably, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), in its recent World Economic Outlook (WEO) report, has stated that India is set to become fourth fourth-largest economy in the world, with a GDP of $4.19 trillion in 2025, ahead of Japan. Elon Musk's father, Errol Musk, is currently in India for a visit, focused on accelerating the nation's green technology and EV charging infrastructure development. The 79-year-old patriarch of the Musk family also shared his views on the ongoing India-Pakistan hostilities and said that 'if it is Pakistan causing the trouble, something needs to be done about it'. He also called for bringing an end to the miseries of Kashmiri residents living under the scourge of terrorism.

Why Microsoft is warning Authenticator app users to save their passwords on Edge browser immediately

Microsoft is asking users of the Authenticator app to back up all their saved passwords immediately. This comes after the company announced plans to phase out the app's password management capabilities starting next month. Microsoft Authenticator, which is widely used for providing two-factor authentication for online accounts, offers users the convenience of storing and autofilling passwords for various apps and websites, a feature that will now be removed. The company is now shifting its password management feature to its Edge browser. What Microsoft said about transferring passwords from Authenticator to Edge In a blog post, Microsoft explains how this change will affect users. The company writes: 'Your saved passwords (but not your generated password history) and addresses are securely synced to your Microsoft account, and you can continue to access them and enjoy seamless autofill functionality with Microsoft Edge, a secure and user-friendly AI-powered web browser that offers features such as Microsoft Defender SmartScreen, Password Monitor, and InPrivate search.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo The company has confirmed: 'Starting June 2025, you will no longer be able to save new passwords in Authenticator. During July 2025, you will not be able to use autofill with Authenticator. From August 2025, your saved passwords will no longer be accessible in Authenticator.' The tech giant has also noted that any saved payment information, including credit card details stored in the Authenticator app, will be deleted by the deadline. This payment data will not automatically transfer to the Microsoft Edge browser and will require users to manually re-enter their card details in Edge if they wish to continue using Microsoft's ecosystem for payment information storage. To keep using generated passwords, users should save them from the Generator history (accessible via the appropriate icon or option from the Password tab) into their saved passwords. Microsoft Authenticator will continue to support passkeys. However, it's important to note that if passkeys are set up for a Microsoft account, users must ensure that Authenticator remains enabled as the Passkey Provider. Disabling Authenticator will also disable the associated passkeys. How to use Microsoft Edge's password autofill feature To use autofill with Microsoft Edge, users need to set Edge as their default autofill provider on their mobile devices. For iPhone users, this involves downloading the Microsoft Edge browser and navigating to the device's settings. Under General, they must select 'Autofill & Passwords' and then choose Edge from the list of available password managers. Once Edge is selected and the user has signed in, their passwords and addresses will be securely synced with their Microsoft account. These details can be managed through the Edge app under Settings > Passwords. It's important to note that if passkeys have been set up for a Microsoft Account, the Microsoft Authenticator app must remain enabled as the designated Passkey Provider, as disabling it will result in the loss of access to those passkeys. Android users follow a similar process. After downloading the Edge browser, they need to go to their device's settings and search for the Autofill option. Under Preferred Service, they should choose Edge. After signing in to the Edge browser, autofill will become active, and their passwords and addresses will be securely synced with their Microsoft account. These can also be accessed through Edge's Settings under the Passwords section. Additional precautions apply to Android users who have set up passkeys for work or school accounts using the Authenticator app. In such cases, they need to ensure that the Authenticator toggle is enabled under Device Settings > Autofill > Additional Services. Turning off Authenticator will also disable the use of passkeys. Furthermore, for security reasons, payment information is not synced to Edge or any other app and is saved only on the device where it was entered. Microsoft has announced that any payment information stored in the Authenticator app will be deleted after July 2025, requiring users to manually re-enter this data if needed. To access saved passwords in Microsoft Edge on a mobile device, users can simply open the app, tap the menu icon, go to Settings, and select Passwords.

Elon Musk laid out plans for Mars. SpaceX production will outstrip Boeing and Airbus

Next Story Business News/ Companies / Elon Musk laid out plans for Mars. SpaceX production will outstrip Boeing and Airbus Al Root , Barrons Over the weekend, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk gave a talk about making life multi-planetary. He wants to go to Mars—soon. It's a question that might need answering in your lifetime. SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk outlined his plans to make life multi-planetary by sending Earthlings to Mars. The scale of his ambitions is mind-blowing. Over the weekend, Musk presented to SpaceX employees at Starbase, Texas. (Starbase is a literal city run by SpaceX.) The goal of the talk was to describe the steps required to bring SpaceX technology and, ultimately, humans to Mars. The talk also provided investors with a fascinating glimpse into Musk's space company. A civilization on Mars is 'going to be incredibly important for the long-term survival of civilization," said Musk. 'Then we go beyond Mars, ultimately, to the move, maybe asteroid belt…and ultimately, to other star systems…making science fiction no longer fiction." To achieve that, humanity needs rapidly reusable rockets, Musk added—a lot of them. Starship is SpaceX's fully reusable launch system in testing today. It's the most powerful rocket ship ever built by humans, standing some 400 feet tall on a launchpad. SpaceX can make a Starship every two to three weeks. That's an amazing tidbit in and of itself. Musk, however, wants to produce 1,000 a year. Boeing and Airbus delivered 1,114 planes combined in 2024 and are expected to deliver roughly 1,400 in 2025, according to FactSet. Most of those, however, are 737-sized jets. One Starship is bigger than a Boeing 747. SpaceX 'will be making, at some point, probably, as many Starships for Mars as Boeing and Airbus make [jets]," added Musk. Humans can launch missions to Mars every two years when planetary orbits align. The next window comes in late 2026. Musk wants to hit that window—sending something to Mars in a matter of months. To reach that goal, SpaceX has to perfect catching the top and lower half of the Starship rockets, improve the rocket engines and heat shield, and pioneer in-orbit refueling of a rocket ship. (Musk said in-orbit refueling testing can start in 2026.) The list of tasks to complete looks daunting. SpaceX has tested its Starship nine times. Each test has had some level of problems. No one at SpaceX, however, seems to be bothered by testing hiccups. For them, it's all part of the process of perfecting the tech. Musk even has a plan to pay for all the testing and building required. Starlink is SpaceX's profitable space-based Wi-Fi service that can essentially fund Mars development. Starlink represents roughly 80% of the current $350 billion value of SpaceX, says Rainmaker Securities CEO Glen Anderson. Through Friday trading, Boeing and Airbus, including debt, were worth a combined $340 billion. Rainmaker facilitates trades in privately held companies such as SpaceX. It estimates Starlink has more than five million subscribers globally. Eventually, Musk wants to ship one million tons of cargo to Mars every launch window. That's roughly 4,500 Statues of Liberty every two years. Thousands of rockets, sending millions of tons of cargo to build a city on another planet that's capable of supporting human life sounds like science fiction indeed. It might not be that way for much longer. Write to Al Root at Topics You May Be Interested In Catch all the Business News , Corporate news , Breaking News Events and Latest News Updates on Live Mint.
