Wilson County mayor discusses growth in annual address
WILSON COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — In Wilson County, growth continues to be a headline. About 60% of that growth has been in the city of Lebanon over the last six years.
While it's considered a desirable location, Wilson County also ranks No. 1 in the state when it comes to public safety, education, and agriculture, according to data from the mayor's office.
'Of course we want to be the best in the state of Tennessee when you compare us to all 95 counties,' Wilson County Mayor Randall Hutto said.
During Hutto's annual State of the County Address on Wednesday, March 26, he pointed out Wilson County is the 27th fastest growing county in the nation. Meanwhile, as News 2 reported last year, Lebanon was named the 12th fastest growing city in the country.

According to Hutto, the county is No. 1 in the state when it comes to public safety based on several factors.
'We've just doubled the size of the jail here in Wilson County. With that double in size of the jail, we put a 911 location center there,' Hutto said.
Last week, law enforcement and first responders across the county trained for an active shooter situation.
'This is a big process, something we've never been through, but it's something that can happen any day,' Capt. Scott Moore with the Wilson County Sheriff's Office told News 2 on Thursday, March 20.
Wilson County is one step closer to building new middle school
On top of safety in schools, officials had license plate recognition cameras installed across the county, with cameras in both Mt. Juliet and Lebanon catching criminals from surrounding areas.
According to recent data, more than 88% of the people arrested in Mt. Juliet this month were not Mt. Juliet residents. In fact, the majority of them were from the Nashville area.
Hutto said Wilson County also leads in education as the growing population demands more schools. In the last 12 years, the county built 12 schools.
'I know the most asked question I get all the time is, I'm driving down the road and I see that construction site and everybody says, 'What's over there?'' Hutto said.
⏩
When it comes to new development, from the Costco Wholesale in Mt. Juliet to the In-N-Out Burger coming to Lebanon, just to name a couple, Hutto said the county has seen a 44% increase in jobs, which has brought more people to Wilson County.
'We're the second lowest unemployment rate in the state of Tennessee, and that was as of August of '24,' Hutto said.

Wanted man arrested for reckless driving, other charges in Mt. Juliet after making DoorDash delivery
MT. JULIET, Tenn. (WKRN) — A DoorDash driver is facing multiple charges after a traffic stop for speeding in Mt. Juliet Saturday night reportedly led to the discovery of drugs, as well as an outstanding warrant. According to the Mt. Juliet Police Department, an officer spotted a Jeep Renegade 'flying down' Interstate 40 West, going 93 mph in a 70 mph zone, on Saturday, June 7. However, after the vehicle was safely stopped, law enforcement realized this wasn't a simple speeding case. Several injured after skydiving plane crashes in Tullahoma 'The driver—a 34-year-old man from Nashville—had just dropped off a DoorDash delivery and was still in a rush, driving recklessly and endangering others on the road,' officials said. The MJPD said the officer discovered the driver had an outstanding warrant out of Nashville for violation of probation, which was tied to a felony aggravated assault conviction. In addition, the man was reportedly driving on a revoked license. Then, when authorities searched the vehicle, they said they found five chalky blue pills — suspected to be pressed fentanyl — hidden in a cigarette pack. Law enforcement said they arrested the driver, who now faces charges for reckless driving, driving on a revoked license, possession of fentanyl, and the outstanding warrant. Body of Thai hostage kidnapped into Gaza on Oct. 7 is retrieved in special military operation, Israel says
Israel says it has retrieved the body of a Thai hostage kidnapped and taken into Gaza on Oct. 7, 2023, as it continues its military offensive across the strip, killing at least 22 people overnight, according to health officials. The prime minister's office said Saturday that the body of Thai citizen Nattapong Pinta was returned to Israel in a special military operation. Pinta had come to Israel to work in agriculture. He had a wife and son. Pinta was kidnapped from Kibbutz Nir Oz and killed in captivity near the start of the war, said the government. His body was retrieved from the Rafah area, Israel's defense minister said. Israel said it found Pinta's body based on information received from the hostage task force and military intelligence. The army said he was taken into Gaza by the Mujahideen Brigades, the small armed group that it said had also abducted and killed Shiri Bibas and her two small children. This undated photo provided by the Hostage's Family Forum shows Nattapong Pinta, with his wife and son. Hostage's Family Forum via AP A statement from the hostage forum, which supports the hostages, said it stands with Pinta's family and shares in their grief. It called on the country's decision makers to bring home the remaining hostages and give those who have died a proper burial. Thais were the largest group of foreigners held captive by Hamas militants. Many of the Thai agricultural workers lived in compounds on the outskirts of southern Israeli kibbutzim and towns, and Hamas militants overran those places first. A total of 46 Thais have been killed during the conflict, according to Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Before Pinta's body was retrieved, three Thai hostages remained in captivity and two were confirmed dead. The fate of Pinta was uncertain until today, according to the hostage forum. Fifty-five hostages remain in Gaza, of whom Israel says more than half are dead. This comes two days after the bodies of two Israeli-American hostages were retrieved. Judith Weinstein and Gad Haggai had been killed on October 7, and their bodies taken into Gaza. They had also lived on Kibbutz Nir Oz, CBS News previously reported. They had also been taken into Gaza by the Mujahideen Brigades. The retrieval of Pinta's body comes as Israel continues its military campaign across Gaza. Hospital officials said they received the bodies of nearly two dozen people Saturday. Four strikes hit the Muwasi area in southern Gaza between Rafah and Khan Younis. In northern Gaza, one strike hit an apartment, killing seven people, including a mother and five children. Their bodies were taken to Shifa hospital. Israel said Saturday that it's responding to Hamas' "barbaric attacks" and is dismantling its capabilities. It said it follows international law and takes all feasible precautions to mitigate civilian harm. Hamas-led militants killed some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, in the Oct. 7 attack and abducted 251 hostages. They are still holding 55 hostages, around a third of them believed to be alive, after most of the rest were released in ceasefire agreements or other deals. Israeli forces have rescued eight living hostages from Gaza and recovered dozens of bodies. Israel's military campaign has killed more than 54,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants. The offensive has destroyed large parts of Gaza and displaced around 90% of its population of roughly 2 million Palestinians.
