Russia advances in Ukraine amid row over dead soldiers
Russia says its forces have advanced to the edge of the east-central Ukrainian region of Dnipropetrovsk amid a public row between the countries over peace negotiations and the return of thousands of bodies of soldiers.
Despite talk of peace, the war is stepping up with Russian forces grabbing more territory and Ukraine unfurling high-profile drone and sabotage attacks on Russia's nuclear-capable bomber fleet and, according to the Kremlin, on railways.
Russia, which controls about 18 per cent of Ukrainian territory, has taken more than 190 square km of the Sumy region of northeastern Ukraine in less than a month, according to pro-Ukrainian open source maps.
Now, according to the Russian defence ministry, units of the 90th Tank Division of the Central Grouping of Russian forces have reached the western frontier of Ukraine's Donetsk region and are attacking the adjacent Dnipropetrovsk region.
"The enemy does not abandon its intentions to enter the Dnipropetrovsk region," Ukraine's Southern Defence Forces said on Telegram.
"Our soldiers are courageously and professionally holding their section of the front, disrupting the occupier's plans. This work does not stop for a minute."
Dmitry Medvedev, the deputy chairman of Russia's Security Council, said the Dnipropetrovsk offensive showed that if Ukraine did not want to accept the reality of Russia's territorial gains in peace talks then Russian forces would advance further.
The pro-Ukrainian Deep State map showed Russian forces very close to the Dnipropetrovsk region, which had a population of more than three million before the war, and advancing on the city of Kostyantynivka in the Donetsk region from several directions.
Ukrainian military spokesman Dmytro Zaporozhets said that Russian forces were trying to "build a bridgehead for an attack" on Kostyantynivka, an important logistical hub for the Ukrainian army.
Russia on Saturday accused Ukraine of delaying the swap of prisoners of war and return of the bodies of 12,000 dead soldiers.
Ukraine denied those claims.
On Sunday, Russia said it was moving bodies towards the border and television showed refrigerated trucks containing the bodies of Ukrainian soldiers on the road in the Bryansk region.
Ukraine, officials said, was playing politics with the dead.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy pledged to press on with prisoner exchanges.
"The Russian side is therefore, like always, even in these matters, is trying to play some kind of dirty political and information game," he said in his nightly video address.
"We believe that the exchanges will continue and will do everything for this. If the Russians do not stand by agreements even in humanitarian matters, it casts great doubt on all international efforts - including those by the United States in terms of talks and diplomacy."
Zelenskiy said he had reviewed commanders' reports about areas hit by heavy fighting, including near Pokrovsk, targeted by Russian forces for months.
He said the situation was "far from easy but everything depends on the resilience of our units".
Zelenskiy warned Ukrainians in his video message to be particularly attentive to air raid warnings in the coming days.

Jerusalem | Israeli forces have boarded a charity vessel attempting to reach the Gaza Strip in defiance of an Israeli naval blockade, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) said early on Monday. The British-flagged yacht Madleen, operated by the pro-Palestinian FFC, departed from Sicily on June 6 and had hoped to reach Gaza later today, when the interception occurred, the group said on its Telegram account.

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg puts out distress videos after claiming to be 'kidnapped' by Israeli forces while en route to Gaza
Activists aboard the Gaza-bound Madleen, which has been carrying Greta Thunberg, claim to have been "kidnapped" by Israeli forces after attempting to defy the naval blockade. Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg and her Freedom Flotilla Coalition companions have put out distress videos after being "kidnapped" by Israeli forces while en route to Gaza. Israeli forces boarded the charity vessel which was attempting to reach the Gaza Strip in defiance of an Israeli naval blockade. The British-flagged yacht Madleen, operated by the pro-Palestinian FFC, had departed from Sicily on June 6 and had hoped to reach Gaza later in the day, when the interception occurred, the group said on its Telegram account. In a video uploaded to X, Thunberg told FFC followers they had been "intercepted and kidnapped international waters" by the Israel, and called on the Swedish government to "put pressure" on the Netanyahu government. "I urge all my friends, family and comrades to pout pressure on the Swedish government to release me, and the others, as soon as possible," she said in the video. — Freedom Flotilla Coalition (@GazaFFlotilla) June 9, 2025 Activist Yasmin Acar said the ship was being surrounded by drones and encircled by ships in a post to social media. Shortly after, she released a pre-recorded video which said, 'If you are seeing this video, we have been intercepted at sea and kidnapped at sea'. 'SOS! the volunteers on 'Madleen' have been kidnapped by Israeli forces,' the rogue activists said in a post to Telegram. 'Greta Thunberg is a citizen of Sweden. Pressure their foreign ministries and help us keep them safe!' It follows escalating tensions as the Madleen, a British-flagged vessel carrying a symbolic cargo of aid attempted to breach Israel's longstanding naval blockade of Gaza. Contact with the Madleen was lost on Monday (Australian time) after reports emerged of an Israeli military operation to halt the vessel in international waters. UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese, who had been in communication with the vessel, posted on X that the situation had become critical. 'Two drones over the Madleen. They say they are quadcopters, the dangerous ones. TEAM IS TAKING COVER.' Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz had earlier issued a direct order to the military to prevent the flotilla from reaching Gaza. 'To Greta the anti-Semite and her companions, Hamas propaganda mouthpieces, I say clearly: turn back because you will not reach Gaza,' he said. This is a developing story. More to come.

Israeli army 'boards' Freedom Flotilla Coalition's Gaza-bound ship, group says
The Freedom Flotilla Coalition says the Israeli military has "boarded" the Gaza-bound charity ship the Madleen. Connections have been lost on the ship, the coalition added in a post on Telegram. The Israeli navy had earlier instructed the Madleen to change its course as it approaches a restricted area, the Israeli foreign ministry said early on Monday. The ministry referred to the ship as a "selfie yacht" in a post on X. ABC/Reuters
