Cambodian opposition figure jailed 4 years for incitement

PHNOM PENH : A Cambodian court sentenced an outspoken opposition politician to four years in jail for incitement today, he told reporters, barring him from voting and holding office.
Nation Power Party adviser Rong Chhun said he was found guilty of incitement to cause serious social unrest – a charge Cambodian authorities frequently deploy against activists.
The case was brought against him last year after he met victims of land disputes and commented on Prime Minister Hun Manet's visit to the border area with Vietnam.
Outside Phnom Penh municipal court, Rong Chhun told reporters he would appeal against the 'politically motivated' verdict which he described as 'beyond unjust'.
It was not clear if he would immediately be arrested.
'My message is that the rulers must stop using the legal system to suppress politicians,' he said.
He said the case 'reflects our Cambodia has no full democracy and anybody with a dissenting voice who has popularity and support from the people is always suppressed and ousted from the political scene'.
Rong Chhun was previously arrested in 2020 after accusing the Cambodian government of 'irregularities' in the demarcation of the country's eastern border with Vietnam.
He was sentenced to two years in jail in August 2021 but was released three months later by an appeal court, with the remaining sentence suspended for three years.
Rights groups have long accused Cambodia's government of using legal cases as a tactic to silence opposition voices and legitimate political dissent.
Another opposition leader was fined US$1.5 million in July after remarking that Cambodia was 'getting worse in terms of democracy' under the leadership of Hun Manet.
Hun Manet assumed power in 2023 after his father, Hun Sen, stepped down following nearly four decades of rule.
Sun Chanthy, the founder of the Nation Power Party established in 2023, was also sentenced to two years in jail in December for inciting social disorder.

The Thai government has said it does not recognise the court's jurisdiction and proposed that all boundary-related issues be resolved through bilateral negotiations, with talks scheduled for June 14. Thailand and Cambodia have for more than a century contested sovereignty at undemarcated points along their shared border, which was mapped by France in 1907 when Cambodia was its colony. Tension escalated in 2008 over an 11th-century Hindu temple, leading to skirmishes over several years and at least a dozen deaths, including during a week-long exchange of artillery in 2011. Both governments have enjoyed warm ties, from a close friendship between former leaders, Thaksin Shinawatra from Thailand and Cambodia's Hun Sen. Thai DPM Phumtham cancels Paris trip to monitor three key developments
BANGKOK: Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai (pic) has cancelled his planned trip to Paris next week in order to monitor three key developments involving former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and Thai-Cambodian relations, a source said. The source revealed that Phumtham decided to withdraw from the military meeting and airshow scheduled for June 15–19 in Paris so he could remain in the country to closely follow events occurring on June 12, 13 and 14. On Thursday (June 12), the Medical Council of Thailand is due to meet to decide whether to reaffirm its resolution to punish three doctors who gave opinions that were used as justification for allowing Thaksin to stay at the Police General Hospital for six months instead of serving time in Bangkok Remand Prison. The council had previously resolved to suspend the medical licences of two doctors and issue a warning to a third. However, Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsuthin exercised his right to veto the resolution. This veto means the council must now secure a two-thirds majority vote to reaffirm the decision. On June 13, the Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Holders of Political Office is scheduled to begin an inquisitorial process into whether state agencies failed to enforce the court's ruling to imprison Thaksin. The court earlier stated it had reason to believe Thaksin's sentence was not properly carried out, given that he remained at the Police General Hospital for six months before being paroled in February last year. Cambodia, Thailand hope peaceful settlement of border dispute
PHNOM PENH/BANGKOK, June 7 (Xinhua) -- Both Cambodia and Thailand expressed hopes for a peaceful settlement of the border dispute after a brief exchange of gunfire in a disputed border area on May 28. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said on Saturday that he hopes to resolve the border issue with Thailand peacefully. "Cambodia adheres to the principles of maintaining peace, friendship and good cooperation with Thailand," Hun Manet posted on his Facebook page, saying Cambodia has decided to refer the dispute to the International Court of Justice. "The decision is to seek a peaceful and permanent solution to the border problems in those areas, rather than leaving the problem to remain ambiguous for a long time, which could lead to a new armed conflict," he added. Hun Manet said Cambodia would continue to collaborate with Thai parties to promote the measurement of the border and establish the remaining border using the Cambodia-Thai Joint Boundary Commission mechanism. Speaking at a press conference, Thai Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nikorndej Balankura called on the Cambodian side to "reduce the level of tension along the border to prevent the situation from escalating unnecessarily." Following the late-May military skirmish, Thailand has exercised "the utmost restraint" and focused on resolving the situation peacefully by pursuing all diplomatic channels to de-escalate tensions, Nikorndej said. Meanwhile, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is also the chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2025, posted on X on Friday that he has "engaged with the Prime Ministers of Thailand and Cambodia" regarding the ongoing border issues.
