Needless controversy over foreign-born Lions players ramps up pressure
For the class of 2017 it was the Geography Six and for the current crop, it may prove to be the Southern Hemisphere Seven. Andy Farrell's squad announcement was low on controversy, on glaring omissions or shock inclusions, and even the Owen issue was dealt with diplomatically. In the days since, however, provenance has been raised as a problem.
Farrell selected in his squad three players born in New Zealand, two in Australia and two in South Africa. Willie John McBride – a legend of five Lions tours – is apparently 'bothered' by it and is not alone in expressing concerns at the number of foreign-born players in the 38-man squad.

All seven are, of course, entirely eligible. Mack Hansen and Sione Tuipulotu were born in Australia but qualified for Ireland and Scotland respectively via a parent or grandparent. Bundee Aki, Jamison Gibson-Park, James Lowe, Pierre Schoeman and Duhan van der Merwe all qualified on residency grounds. For the record, Marcus Smith was born in Manila and Joe McCarthy in Manhattan while Huw Jones was born in Leith, moved to the south of England as a child and spent his formative rugby years in South Africa.
In short, nationality is a complex issue and each player has had their own journey towards a seat on the plane to Australia. Tuipulotu admits he 'didn't grow up dreaming of playing for Scotland or the Lions, that's the truth,' before adding: 'But this is where my path has led me.' He speaks of feeling the need to prove his allegiance and Lowe agrees. 'Obviously when you don't have the blood running through your veins, there is a little bit of that.'
The merits of the residency rule have long since been debated and, when World Rugby extended the qualification period from three years to five, it felt like the admission of a loophole needing to be closed, or at least tightened. Certainly, the proliferation of 'project players' has dried up since then.

That Farrell's selections have provoked criticism now should be met with unease, however. Hansen was the last of the seven players to make his Test debut three years ago and it is sanctimonious to suggest players with more than 300 Test appearances between them are not befitting of the precious red jersey.
'When I play rugby, I play better when there is a chip on my shoulder anyway,' says Tuipulotu. 'I've been nothing but embraced by the Scottish public since I've been playing for Scotland. There are always going to be a couple of people like there are for some of the Irish boys, but I take that in my stride because I don't blame those people, either. I'm looking forward to showing how committed I am to playing for the Lions with how I play and I can't wait to get over there.'
After making his comeback from a long-term pectoral injury last weekend, Tuipulotu is the frontrunner for the Test No 12 jersey in Australia. Before injury struck, he captained Scotland against the Wallabies last autumn and his grandmother, Jaqueline, flew over from Australia to take her place in the Murrayfield crowd.
'In those early days, just to be completely transparent, you have that feeling of: 'Am I part of this?'' Tuipulotu says. 'When my gran came over before the Australia game, it allowed the public to put a face to the story, listen to how much it meant to her. I think that gave eyes to the public that my story is authentic.'

The sleepless nights brought on by fears that his injury might cost Tuipulotu his place in the Lions squad only highlight his determination to prove himself this summer. 'I think it was just the fact it was my pec,' he says. 'If you had asked me what the first big injury of my career [would be], I'd say my ankle or my knee but the fact that it was my boob just didn't make any sense to me.
'I just felt it was over for me and I put so much on myself that I really wanted to be a Lion because I know how much it means to people over here.'
Lowe, meanwhile, is set to join the select band of players who have played for and against the Lions. In 2017 he lined up at full-back as the Maori All Blacks were well beaten by Gatland's tourists in Rotorua. 'I think everyone would admit that was their first actual Test match, the first one they properly turned up for,' Lowe says. 'It was an introduction into what it actually meant to the boys playing for the Lions and a level of intensity that was unmatched.

'When I was first selected for Ireland, all the people come out of the woodwork saying: 'How is this person representing Ireland?' But the rules are there. We've all done our time. I am fully embedded in the culture of Ireland. Sione's captained Scotland. You don't have to question where his allegiance lies. My old man walks around in an Ireland jersey and a Leinster jumper.
'Everyone's got a different story, my story just didn't start in Ireland. But I can see it ending in Ireland. My two kids were born in Ireland. My wife and I are super happy with everything Ireland has given us and we don't see ourselves moving.'

Game-by-game predictions for the Steelers 2025 schedule after the addition of Aaron Rodgers
Game-by-game predictions for the Steelers 2025 schedule after the addition of Aaron Rodgers When we did our initial game-by-game predictions for the Pittsburgh Steelers for the 2025 season, we did so without the benefit of having quarterback Aaron Rodgers on the team. We felt confident it would happen eventually but couldn't account for him until he was signed. Now, with Rodgers signed, we are updating our picks to see just how many more wins we give Pittsburgh now. Week 1: @ New York Jets — Sun, Sept 7, 1:00 pm (CBS) Pittsburgh travels to Pittsburgh and finds out they should have kept Justin Fields. LOSS UPDATE: The Rodgers revenge tour starts here and Pittsburgh sneaks out of New Jersey with a win. WIN Week 2: vs Seattle Seahawks — Sun, Sept 14, 1:00 pm (FOX) A tough Seahawks defense proves to be too much for a struggling Steelers offense. LOSS UPDATE: Coming off of that Week One win, we think the Steelers come home and get another win over the Seahawks. WIN Week 3: @ New England Patriots — Sun, Sept 21, 1:00 pm (CBS) The Steelers run into another tough defense, along with an improving Patriots offense. LOSS Week 4: vs Minnesota Vikings (Ireland) — Sun, Sept 28, 9:30 am (NFLN) A trip to Ireland proves to be the luck of the Irish for the Steelers. WIN Week 5: BYE — Sun, Oct 5 Steelers go into the bye 1-4 and must regroup. Week 6: vs Cleveland Browns — Sun, Oct 12, 1:00 pm (CBS) The Browns are in as much trouble as the Steelers, so we give Pittsburgh the win. WIN Week 7: @ Cincinnati Bengals (TNF) — Thurs, Oct 16, 8:15 pm (Prime Video) The Bengals are an elite AFC team, so barring some big injuries, this one is a walk for Cincinnati. LOSS Week 8: @ Green Bay Packers (SNF) — Sun, Oct 26, 8:20 pm (NBC) The Steelers can't get away from the attacking defenses and as of now, we don't have confidence in the Steelers offense. LOSS Week 9: vs Indianapolis Colts — Sun, Nov 2, 1:00 pm (CBS) The Steelers finally start to get things together and squeak past the Colts. WIN Week 10: @ Los Angeles Chargers (SNF) — Sun, Nov 9, 8:20 pm (NBC) Najee Harris revenge tour welcomes the Steelers to town and beats Pittsburgh/ LOSS With Rodgers in the mix, we are going to flip this one and say he outplays Justin Herbert. WIN Week 11: vs Cincinnati Bengals — Sun, Nov 16, 1:00 pm (CBS) We are calling for the upset in Pittsburgh, and the Steelers squeak past the Bengals. LOSS Week 12: @ Chicago Bears — Sun, Nov 23, 1:00 pm (CBS) We are not at all sold on Caleb Williams and the Bears, so we give the Steelers a win here. WIN Week 13: vs Buffalo Bills — Sun, Nov 30, 4:25 pm (CBS) The Steelers are nowhere near the same class as the Bills. LOSS Week 14: @ Baltimore Ravens — Sun, Dec 7, 1:00 pm (CBS) A road game against the Ravens is terrifying and Lamar Jackson is just too good. LOSS Week 15: vs Miami Dolphins (MNF) — Mon, Dec 15, 8:15 pm (ESPN/ABC) The Steelers typically play well on Monday night and the Dolphins are a mystery. WIN Week 16: @ Detroit Lions — Sun, Dec 21, 4:25 pm (CBS) The Lions are in a different class than the Steelers and could be battling for playoff position. LOSS Week 17: @ Cleveland Browns — Sun, Dec 28, 1:00 pm (CBS) We refuse to believe this Browns team is worse than the Steelers. WIN Week 18: vs Baltimore Ravens — TBD (TBD) We are giving the Steelers a win here as we predict neither team will have anything to play for by the Steelers will have pride. WIN Final record UPDATE: After figuring Rodgers into the formula, we give the Steelers a three-win swing to finish 10-7, which should be enough for them to sneak into the playoffs and keep head coach Mike Tomlin's streak alive. We have the Steelers finishing the season at 7-10 and with that missing the playoffs and breaking head coach Mike Tomlin's streak of non-losing seasons. We will update our predictions again at the start of training camp, ahead of the preseason and then finally just before the start of Week One of the regular season.

CBS Sports includes 8 Lions in Top 100 players of 2025 list
A list released Tuesday includes eight Detroit Lions among the best 100 players in the NFL entering the 2025-26 season. CBS Sports senior NFL columnist Pete Prisco's NFL Top 100 players of 2025 list is headlined by star players at the top including Patrick Mahomes at No. 1 and Saquon Barkley at No. 3. The first Lions player doesn't appear until outside the top 10. Advertisement Lions superstar edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson slots in at No. 15 coming off of last season's injury that put a halt to his Defensive Player of the Year campaign. To his credit, Prisco ranked Hutchinson No. 47 before the start of last season. Hutchinson fell below other top pass rushers on this year's list including Myles Garrett (No. 2), Micah Parsons (No. 10), and T.J. Watt (No. 11). He's just a few spots ahead of Chris Jones (No. 18) and Trey Hendrickson (No. 26). The next Lion ranked is right tackle Penei Sewell at No. 21. Prisco acknowledged in his list that Sewell is in the conversation for best right tackle in the NFL, but did have him ranked at No. 17 in last season's list. The only right tackle ranked ahead of Sewell is longtime Eagles O-lineman Lane Johnson (No. 12). Advertisement A couple more scrolls down this list is running back Jahmyr Gibbs at No. 32. Gibbs had a stellar 2024-25 season while splitting time with David Montgomery and is expected to build on that this season. Prisco didn't have Gibbs ranked ahead of last season. He only trails Barkley at No. 3 and Derrick Henry at No. 14 on this year's list. The gap at this point in the list is a bit jarring, getting all the way outside the top 50 before getting to wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown at No. 58. St. Brown finished second in the NFL in catches last season and was ranked No. 39 on Prisco's list entering last season. St. Brown surprisingly fell behind several other receivers on this list including Brian Thomas Jr. (No. 44) and Malik Nabers (No. 45). Even sitting a spot behind Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield at No. 57 seems like a stretch. Advertisement The list lumps the Lions' talented safety duo fairly close together at this point in the list with Kerby Joseph at No. 60 and Brian Branch at No. 65. Neither of them were ranked on Prisco's list last season, but they were one of the bright spots on a struggling defensive unit by the time the playoffs rolled around. Quarterback Jared Goff comes in at No. 77 after having the best year of his career last season. He moved down only one spot from last season's list. He's several spots below peers like Jalen Hurts (No. 52) and Mayfield (No. 57), but is sitting well ahead of Dak Prescott (No. 90) and Jordan Love (No. 92). The last Lion on this list is tight end Sam LaPorta at No. 86. It's a steep drop from his spot on last season's list (No. 58), but his numbers did see a steep decline compared to his rookie season. Still, LaPorta is ranked ahead of Travis Kelce (No. 96) and is one of only five tight ends included in the top 100. You can see Prisco's full list here. Notre Dame got crystal ball picks for Grayson McKeogh, Khary Adams, Joey O'Brien and more
Notre Dame got crystal ball picks for Grayson McKeogh, Khary Adams, Joey O'Brien and more Notre Dame football could be going on another commitment run, and if what has transpired over the last day is correct, it's going to be happening. On Tuesday and Wednesday, the Irish got multiple projections for top players to end up in South Bend. We covered the news of Arizona wide receiver Devin Fitzgerald trending to Notre Dame, along with canceling his official visit to North Carolina. That wasn't the only positive recruiting news for the Irish as Connecticut offensive tackle Charlie Thom, who just got his offer yesterday, is expected to join the class according to On3's Mike Singer. Notre Dame is looking for another tackle in the 2026 class, and he'd be a great addition. Staying with that group of insiders, Steve Wiltfong also made a few Irish projections for offensive tackle Grayson McKeogh and cornerback Khary Adams, while also joining in on Fitzgerald. The positive developments didn't end there, as 247Sports also put in crystal ball picks for McKeogh, Adams, safety Nick Reddish, Fitzgerald and safety Joey O'Brien. It's pretty safe to say that this past weekends official visitors trips were a huge success. We will find out shortly if these projections hold true, but it's looking like Notre Dame will be adding more than a few elite prospects over the next few months.
