A 40-year-old Nigerian national has been arrested in Bethal, Mpumalanga for dealing in drugs, according to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, also known as the Hawks.
Provincial Hawks spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Magonseni Nkosi stated that the 40-year-old man was previously arrested for dealing in drugs.
'The suspect is currently out on bail on a separate but similar offence of dealing in drugs after he was arrested alongside 11 other suspects in Bethal in a Hawks Operation Dream On in June 2021,' said Nkosi.
On Friday, the Nigerian national was arrested in a joint operation emanating from intelligence driven information including the Secunda crime intelligence unit, the Hawks Secunda-based serious organised crime investigation unit and the Secunda K9 unit. During the arrest, Nkosi said the 40-year-old man was found in possession of seven plastic bags of substances believed to be crystal meth, two plastic bags of substances believed to be kat as well as close to R10,000 in cash.
'The team proceeded to the suspect's residential place where his 34-year-old companion was found without any legal documents to be in South Africa,' said Nkosi.
The arrested duo is expected to appear before the Bethal Magistrate's Court on Monday, 19 May 2025, for dealing in drugs and for contravention of the Immigration Act.

Meanwhile, provincial head of the Hawks in Mpumalanga, Major General Nico Gerber has welcomed the arrest, adding that a thorough investigation will be conducted.
"We are not only interested in getting drugs off the streets, but our main focus is on the origin of drugs. Once we deal with manufacturers, we will have achieved our mission of rooting out drug related activities in the province," said Gerber.
In February, IOL reported that five drug dealers were convicted and sentenced in Limpopo for drug-related offences and contravention of South Africa's Immigration Act.
At the time, provincial spokesperson for the Hawks, Warrant Officer Lethunya Mmuroa said the five men were convicted by the Musina Regional Court.
The Hawks listed the convicted men as Eze Chekuebwe Aloicios, 42; Chimankpam Prosper Ashame, 53; Dube Lebang David, 40; Chigozie Henry Okoro; and Okeke Peter Richard, 52.
'During 2021, the Musina-based Hawks serious organised crime investigation (unit) received a tip-off about suspicious people who were dealing in illicit drugs around Musina. The investigation was launched and the Hawks managed to identify accused, and the address of their operations,' said Mmuroa.

Arrest of former City of Tshwane official marks a breakthrough in R11 million fraud investigation

A former City of Tshwane senior official, wanted for allegedly defrauding the municipality of R11 million, has been apprehended and appeared in court this week. Image: Jacques Naude / Independent Newspapers A former senior City of Tshwane official, Tienka Abbort, has been arrested and appeared in court in connection with a R11 million municipal funds fraud case. The city has hailed the arrest as a significant breakthrough in the ongoing investigation into the theft. This comes three months after the city reported the suspension of a finance department employee amid internal investigations linking him and two colleagues to a R10 million-plus fraud scheme that allegedly occurred between May 2021 and January 2022. Two of the employees were arrested and appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court, where they were each granted R10,000 bail. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ At the time, the city said the third employee had evaded arrest by hospitalising himself after learning of the impending police action. The alleged scheme involved collusion between city officials and the public to manipulate user debit balances by transferring funds into municipal accounts controlled by the syndicate. 'The employees would collect what the user had intended to pay and, instead of paying that amount into the city's account, the user's account would be credited through the fraudulent transfer of the debit balance into the ghost account. They would then pocket the amount that the user had intended to pay,' the city said. This week, municipal spokesperson, Lindela Mashigo, said Abbort, a former director and accountant, who had been evading arrest, was finally apprehended after an intensive tracing operation led by the city's Forensic Services Division, in collaboration with Lyttleton SAPS. During her court appearance, Abbort applied for bail of R5,000, which was opposed by the National Prosecuting Authority, who requested bail be set at R200,000. The court ultimately granted Abbort bail of R50,000 with strict conditions, which include surrendering her travel documents, reporting twice weekly to her nearest police station, and residing at her current address unless she notifies the investigating officer. The investigation is ongoing, and the city said it will now probe potential collusion between Abbort and the account holders who benefited from the unauthorised transfers. Mashigo said the city's Revenue Management Division is reviewing the affected accounts and will initiate reversals where necessary. He warned residents to be vigilant against individuals or groups posing as agents claiming to 'clear' municipal debt, stating that these schemes are fraudulent and may result in criminal charges and financial loss. Residents in debt are encouraged to visit one of the city's customer care walk-in centres to make legitimate and sustainable arrangements. City Manager Johann Mettler praised the Forensic Services Division team for their outstanding work in combating corruption within the city, highlighting their commitment to identifying and reporting criminal conduct and ensuring accountability. He also called for forensic investigators to be designated as peace officers under the Criminal Procedure Act, stating that this would enhance the city's capacity to act decisively and in real-time against financial crime. 'We believe the city's fight against financial crime would be significantly strengthened by designating forensic investigators as peace officers under the Criminal Procedure Act, a move that could enhance our capacity to act decisively and in real time,' he said.

DA pressure reignites SANDF COVID drug investigation

Both the Hawks and the SIU are proceeding with the investigation into SANDF Cuban Covid looting spree, says the writer. The criminal investigation into how over R250 million was misspent by the SA National Defence Force in 2020 on an unapproved anti-COVID vaccine from Cuba is advancing again after significant DA pressure. Both the Hawks and the SIU are proceeding with this investigation, and complainant statements were taken in person this week to support the charges the DA laid with the SAPS in 2022. Because the criminal investigation had gone cold, the DA used Parliamentary Questions to the Minister of Police to prompt him on the delay in the investigation, and wrote letters to the Minister too, and following this DA intervention, the criminal investigation has been revived. The DA will now push for concrete timelines for the full investigation of this case, and we expect that it will be handed over for prosecution. Those responsible for the SANDF Cuban Covid looting spree, under the guise of a public health emergency, must be held to account — regardless of their rank or political connections. During the most recent sitting of the Joint Standing Committee on Defence (JSCD), the DA successfully proposed that all Hawks and SIU investigations into corruption and maladministration in the SANDF - including this scandal - be reported on quarterly. The committee supported this proposal, marking a critical step in restoring transparency and oversight in historical defence misspending. 'Whilst always abroad', Minister Motshekga may be comfortable with impunity in uniform. The DA is not. We will continue to demand answers and ensure that the Minister of Defence focuses her attention on Defence priorities inland. Nicholas Gotsell (MP) DA NCOP Member on Security & Justice
