Upcycling PC entrepreneur wins Student Enterprise Award
A student entrepreneur who saved 1,000kg of e-waste every year building his own gaming PCs is the winner of the Student Enterprise of the Year.
Jack Cannon, a senior student at Clonkeen College in Dun Laoghaire, built his first PC at the age of 11 with the help of his brother.
He set up Cannon PC at part of the Local Enterprise Offices' Student Enterprise Programme and so far, has achieved sales of almost €40,000.
Cannon builds upcycled high speed gaming PCs from old PCs being disposed of in office clear outs and for general sale online.
The 23rd Student Enterprise Programme National Finals, held in Mullingar, saw 85 businesses from across the country shortlisted in three main categories.
The Local Enterprise Office initiative, supported by Enterprise Ireland and local authorities, started last September in secondary schools nationwide with over 30,000 students taking part this year.
The initiative, funded by the Government of Ireland through Enterprise Ireland and delivered by the 31 Local Enterprise Offices in local authorities throughout the country, has seen over 450,000 take part in the programme since it began 23 years ago.
Suet & Song, a business set up by Michael O'Keeffe from St Kieran's College in Kilkenny, creates high-quality, nutrient rich suet cakes for birds during the colder months and it took home the top prize in the Intermediate Category.
A device that helps hikers and farmers cross electric fencing easily won the top award in the Junior category.
Bumblebees is a business set up by Antonia O'Looney, Sophie Gilard, Guiliana Keane and Katelyn Murtagh from Drumshanbo Vocational School in Leitrim.
Their WASP (Wire Anti Shock Protector) product is a device that enables people to push down the electric fence without receiving a shock, enabling them to cross safely.
Meanwhile, the inaugural Student Enterprise Programme Alumni Award was presented to Fenu Health. Set up by sisters Kate and Annie Madden for the Student Enterprise Programme in 2016, the company creates supplements for equine health and their customers include five royal families.

ICS Medical Devices to create 72 new jobs by 2028
Galway-based catheter designer and manufacturer ICS Medical Devices is to create 72 new jobs by 2028 after winning €1.5 million in funding from Enterprise Ireland. The new roles will come in engineering, human resources, manufacturing and quality. The company currently employs 130 people. ICS, which was founded in 2019, was approved for the funding through a number of Enterprise Ireland supports. It said it will be invested in facilities, capabilities, training and development, digitalisation, as well as in new technologies. The latest accounts filed by the company, which cover the 12 months to the end of June last year, show it generated a turnover of €10.7 million in the year, which was up from €7.8 million the year before. Chief executive Seamus Fahey told The Irish Times he would not disclose specific figures for the most recent 12 month period, but said the company was 'definitely continuing our year-on-year trend of about 20 per cent growth'. Minister of State with responsibility for Employment Alan Dillon said: 'ICS is an Irish company that has experienced impressive growth in the last six years and is leading in the research and development within the medical device space. 'The Government through Enterprise Ireland looks forward to continued engagement with ICS Medical to support their business development in overseas markets.' Jenny Melia, incoming chief executive of Enterprise Ireland, said the company was at the forefront of innovation in the medtech sector, developing 'best in class' catheters. 'Supporting Irish companies with the ambition to scale globally is a key priority for Enterprise Ireland and we will continue to work closely with ICS Medical to optimise their full international growth potential, creating and sustaining jobs here in the Galway region,' she said. ICS Medical Devices has announced that it plans to create 72 new jobs by 2028. Louth County Council signs contract for construction works to begin on Drogheda Digital Hub
The signing commences construction works that will begin immediately on the project, with an aim to boost local enterprise and innovation in Drogheda. Doors are expected to open in late summer. The project will see the complete refurbishment and fit-out of a formerly derelict building into a modern, co-working and innovation space. The refurbishment is funded through Enterprise Ireland's Border Enterprise Development Fund, which is funded under the EU's Brexit Adjustment Reserve (BAR), with co-funding from Louth County Council. The Drogheda Digital Hub is designed to support start-ups, remote workers, and scaling tech enterprises by offering affordable co-working space, business support services, training and tailored mentoring programmes. It is expected to house over 20 co-working desks, meeting rooms, private booths, and breakout areas – providing a modern, professional environment for the region's next generation of entrepreneurs. Chief executive of Louth County Council, David Conway said: 'The Drogheda Digital Hub will support the creation of a vibrant cluster of digital start-ups, right in the heart of the town, and is a beacon for urban renewal on West Street in Drogheda. 'It reinforces that the future development of the town is positive and is further evidence that Louth County Council and our partners and stakeholders are committed to delivering projects that will improve quality of life.' With a 13.2% population increase and more than 7,000 new homes planned for the area, the organisers said that the timing of the initiative is 'critical' to support local entrepreneurship. The signing was attended by senior representatives from Louth County Council, Enterprise Ireland, Drogheda and District Chamber of Commerce, local dignitaries and the appointed contractor, Gavin Duffy, along with the director from Doohamlet Construction. Cllr Kevin Callan, Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council, said: 'Transforming a once-derelict building into a state-of-the-art Digital Hub is a signal that Drogheda is open for innovation, investment, and fresh ideas. 'As well as providing much-needed incubation space for budding entrepreneurs, the Drogheda Digital Hub will draw footfall back to West Street, boosting local businesses, and positioning the town as one of the North-East's leading locations for digital enterprise.'
