Tamworth previews: Lyle Chandler's import ready to make long awaited Aussie debut
Scone conditioner Lyle Chandler can throw his hat into the ring for the training performance of the season should the fascinating import Zelestial win at her Aussie debut, two years after her Irish one.
Zelestial was foaled in England on January 31 in 2021 but is at least 'half-Australian' given she is a daughter of our own one-time dual hemisphere shuttle sire Zoustar.
Her dam, Maderina, who was stakes-placed in France, is a daughter of the Champion 2000m/2400m horse Duke Of Marmalade while Zelestial's next two dam-sires Galileo and Rainbow Quest were peerless in their eras.
With such epic bloodlines, Zelestial is being groomed to one day join the elite Kia Ora Stud broodmare band but showed too much in her two Irish runs not to saddle-up and go around in Australia.
Fifth on debut at Navan to subsequent Group 3 winner and now Australian resident, Givemethebeatboys, Zelestial hasn't raced since finishing down the order at Listowel on June 4, 2023.
She has however, trialled twice in the Hunter region, winning both of them with authority despite the slender margins.
'She had some foot issues like normal Europeans have when they come to Australia; they don't tend to have the best feet, ' Chandler explained.
'She was always showing a nice deal of ability but she was also just struggling to adapt to Australia.
'She has always had a good deal of fortitude, eating well, etc, etc and doing well in the stable but the Farm (Kia Ora) has had to be patient with her.'
That patience could reap a tangible reward when Chandler sends Zelestial around in the Functions @ The TJC Maiden Handicap (1200m).
'She is definitely ready to race,'' Chandler says.
'I would say normally a 1200m at Tamworth would be a little bit short for her but I am thinking maybe with a bit of rain and if the tempo is strong, it may favour her to run on a bit and possibly win.
'I'd expect her to be very competitive at 1400m but at 1200m we are going to need all the favours.'
Chandler is best known for his exploits with the eight-times winner of $632,800 Banju, whose primary win came at Tamworth in the town's Cup in April 2023.

It's not only Banju and Chandler who have a grand record at the venue, his 'Get Out Stakes' hopeful Zenti is one for one at the Tablelands track.
The son of Exosphere aims to maintain his unbeaten tag there today when he leads the field out in the 2TM Sports Show Benchmark 66 Handicap over 1000m.
'1000m is probably short of his best, he likes to get out more to that 1200m mark where he can just have his own way a bit,'' Chandler said.
'I think from a nice draw, I certainly wouldn't be surprised if he ran a place.'
Chandler's renaming runner on the card is Ladyking whose last-start seventh of 12 at Muswellbrook contained significant 'hidden merit'.
'I thought it was really good,'' Chandler says.
'It ended up being the fastest last 600m and she obviously drew a bad gate there and had drawn a slightly bad gate again at Tamworth.
'She will run another nice race, and she's not far off winning, but I think just because you've got to give away a little bit of a start, that might give her too much to do late.'
Ladyking shapes as a broodmare os some worth when she calls it a day on the score of her third dam being the Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner, Our Fiction.

'He's got some screws loose': Dennett's big challenge
Trainer Melissa Dennett has the Widden bred gelding Maxandus in peak physical condition ahead of his Maiden mission on Tuesday but isn't as certain about the horse's mind.
The son of Silver Slipper hero Headwater has handed in two rock solid runs to start his career, both of them at home at Tamworth but saddled with the visitor's draw each time.
Maxandus has a more desirable barrier in Tuesday's Concrete Industry Country Boosted Maiden Plate (1000m) paving the way for a breakthrough win provided he doesn't beat himself.
'He's got the ability,'' Dennett says. 'But he is probably one of the hottest horses we've ever had.
'He's got some screws loose, put it that way. He doesn't do himself any favours pre-race.
'The outside draws have been good in the past because he goes in and is out before too long, but if he holds himself together in the barriers, that is the perfect draw (3).
Maxandus hails from a family made famous by the late Geoff and Beryl White who bred and raced close relation Eremein whose dozen wins included the AJC Queen Elizabeth Stakes, AJC Derby, Rosehill Guineas and BMW Stakes.
Dennett meanwhile has the found the perfect race for the barn's slick sprinters Zampano and Takanakuy who will briefly become rivals when they square off in the 2TM Sports Show Benchmark 66 Handicap (1000m).
One-time boom galloper Zampano is back home in more ways than one after a trip to Sydney for a recent TAB Highway tilt where he finished a respectable fourth.

— Ben Walker (@walkerb83) April 26, 2024
'To be honest, we actually thought he would run better, we were pretty confident,'' Dennett said.
'The track was quite doughy. Ash (Morgan) got off him and said bring him back down but on a better track.
'And it was his first trip away from home too. He's only a young horse, lightly-raced, and he certainly didn't disgrace himself.
'At the 200m, I thought he was going to drop out and run last so he didn't embarrass us anyway and he's pulled up really well.'
Not many horses in the last race can boast a better set of numbers than Dennett's honest mare Takanakuy who has won twice at the track and trip but has never managed to place on rain affected ground.
'She's as tough as they come and she always turns up but she won't want it wet,'' Dennett said.

Aussie heavyweight Justis Huni KO'd in ‘heartbreaking' boxing loss
Australian heavyweight boxer Justis Huni has suffered the first loss of his professional career, getting knocked out when he was on track for victory on Sunday morning. Fighting Fabio Wardley in Ipswich in the UK, Huni was in control of the fight and ahead on the scorecards — on track for a 12th career win. But as the intensity lifted in the 10th round of the 12-round bout, Wardley landed a monster punch on Huni, sending the Australian falling backwards and down onto the canvas. It was a perfectly timed right hand that caught Huni flush on the chin. 'That is unbelievable,' the commentator exclaimed. 'Fabio Wardley, losing virtually every single round — oh my word.' Watch the Justis Huni KO in the video above The punch seriously hurt Huni and the referee stopped the fight after a somewhat brisk eight-count as Huni slowly got to his feet. Main Event commentator Ben Damon said on X: 'Heartbreak for Huni! Australia's Justis Huni was in complete control against Fabio Wardley when this happened.' OMG!!!!!! WARDLEY ERASES HUNI WITH ONE MASSIVE RIGHT HAND IN THE 10TH ROUND AND IT IS OVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! #boxing #WardleyHuni — Dan Rafael (@DanRafael1) June 7, 2025 The knockout blow secured the interim WBA heavyweight belt for Wardley and took the Brit's record to 19-0-1. But it was a heartbreaking loss for Huni, who now has a 12-1 record and will need to bounce back to keep his dream alive of being one the best heavyweight fighters in the world. Rubbing salt into the wound, Huni was ahead 89-82 89-82 88-83 on the judges' scorecards at the time of the stoppage. 'That's my curse,' Huni said after the loss. 'I even said, it only takes one split second to switch off and it happened tonight. 'Credit to Fabio and his team. He's a real champion. 'He's just an awesome fighter. He never gave up and he got the win. He deserved it.' 'Justis Huni's a great operator,' Wardley said. 'I should've performed better in some of those rounds. Sometimes that's the way it goes. We pulled one out of the bag. 'He's a great boxer. Great skills and he showed me everything he has tonight. He pulled out all sorts of tricks. I didn't expect to bank rounds like that with Justis.'

NRL SuperCoach live scores and analysis: Raiders vs Rabbitohs, Wests Tigers vs Panthers
Wests Tigers co-captain Api Koroisau says the club's new era can finally restart with young gun Latu Fainu ready to take his place in the side. Fainu's selection on the Tigers' bench for Sunday's game against Penrith comes as former teenage prodigy Lachlan Galvin will make his club debut for Canterbury. The 20-year-old will start off the bench with Heath Mason starting in the No.6. However, there is no doubting what the long-term plans are at five-eighth. 'Latu is the future at this club,' Koroisau said. 'He's still very young. He's definitely got to get some minutes in his legs as well. It's a really good thing to have.' While Fainu will be slowly brought back, Mason gets his second crack at the scrumbase alongside four-time premiership winner Jarome Luai. Mason impressed in last week's loss to North Queensland, ensuring coach Benji Marshall is loaded with some depth in the position. Koroisau conceded he was relieved to put the Galvin saga behind them. 'We have Heath Mason there at six and Latu coming back as well,'' he said. 'It's all about who we want to have with the personnel we have. 'Heath played so well so we can guarantee he's going to be there and he can always fill in as well. The best thing is, it's behind us now. 'We can focus on who we want to be, especially the guys that are in there now. 'It's a good problem for Benji.' Koroisau is dealing with his own positional battles as reserve hooker Tallyn Da Silva is set to test the market at the end of the year. While Koroisau is looking to re-sign, he sympathised with the rising hooker. 'I'd love to keep him here,'' he said. 'He's a great kid and I think he's a great player. 'You definitely want to play NRL and want to play more minutes. You can completely understand his point of view. It's just a hard place to be. 'From me to him, as long as you think you're doing the right thing for yourself and family and you're looking after you, that's the most important thing.' Despite drawing interest from other clubs, Koroisau has his sights firmly set on re-signing with the Tigers not only to end his playing career but for life after it. The 32-year-old, who is close with Marshall, has expressed interest in hanging around after playing to assist with the rebuild of the club. 'I'd love to finish my time at the Tigers and stay here for the rest of my career, that's the dream,' Koroisau said. 'It keeps me around the game especially for life after footy. 'It's always so up in the air and you don't really know what to do. I'd love to stay in the same environment. 'I love rugby league and I love the boys that I have created connections with so I would love to do that.''

Ange Postecoglou praised by Spurs captain Son Heung-min following sacking
Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min has penned an emotional tribute to Ange Postecoglou following the Australian's sacking as the club's manager. Spurs axed Postecoglou on Saturday morning AEST, just over two weeks after he guided his side to a 1-0 win against Manchester United in the Europa League final. The win in Bilbao last month ended a 17-year trophy drought for Spurs. The Australian was "relieved of his duties", with Spurs citing the club's poor results in the Premier League as the key reason behind the decision. They finished 17th out of 20 teams. Writing on Instagram, Son said Postecoglou deserved to be remembered as a Spurs great. "You've [Postecoglou] changed the trajectory of this club," Son wrote. "You believed in yourself, and us, since day one and never wavered for a second. Even when others did. "You knew what we were capable of all along. You did it your way. And your way brought this club the best night it's had in decades. We will have those memories for life. "You trusted me with the captaincy. One of the highest honours of my career. It's been an incredible privilege to learn from your leadership up close, I am a better player and a better person because of you. "Ange Postecoglou, you are a Tottenham Hotspur legend forever. Thank you, mate." England international James Maddison also praised Postecoglou for the contribution he made to Spurs. Maddison thanked the former Socceroos head coach for helping shape his career. "Your unwavering self-belief and strong mindset is infectious and a massive reason in why you were the man to end this club's 17-year drought for a trophy," Maddison wrote on Instagram. "A family man with great morals and I have honestly learnt so much from you. More than you will probably ever know. All the very best." In its statement announcing Postecoglou's departure, Spurs said the club could not base the "decision on emotions aligned" to the Europa League triumph. "It is crucial that we are able to compete on multiple fronts and believe a change of approach will give us the strongest chance for the coming season and beyond," the statement read. "This has been one of the toughest decisions we have had to make and is not a decision that we have taken lightly, nor one we have rushed to conclude. "We have made what we believe is the right decision to give us the best chance of success going forward, not the easy decision." Spurs said a decision on who would replace Postecoglou as manager would be "announced in due course".
