Tony Kemp, who spent nine seasons as a spark plug in places like Houston and Oakland, retires
Tony Kemp is calling it a career.
The veteran utility player announced his retirement on social media Thursday after nine seasons in the majors.
The 5-foot-6 Kemp hit .237 with 35 home runs and 184 RBIs in 739 games for the Houston Astros, Chicago Cubs, Oakland Athletics and Baltimore Orioles.
Kemp broke in with the Astros in 2016, three years after the club selected him in the fifth round of the 2013 amateur draft out of Vanderbilt. He became a regular by 2018.
Kemp moved from Houston to Chicago at the trade deadline in 2019, then signed with Oakland before the 2020 season. He enjoyed his best season in 2021, hitting a career-best .279 in 131 games and became a fan favorite in part because of his size, something he acknowledged in his retirement announcement.
'To the undersized ballplayer: I see you, I hear you, and I understand you,' Kemp wrote. 'With all of the metrics and data in the game of baseball today, there is still one measurement they can't compute: your heart. Continue to play the game the right way and respect it. The game will reward you, I promise.'
Kemp signed with three different teams in 2024, including twice with Cincinnati. He made a handful of appearances with the Orioles last spring before being released. Kemp spent time in the minors with Minnesota and the Reds last summer but didn't return to the big leagues.
'Perspective is all we have in life,' Kemp wrote. 'So if I could go back in time and tell my 12-year-old self I would accomplish: a World Series ring, a 4x Roberto Clemente Nominee and to be the shortest designated hitter in postseason history, I would simply say, 'Where do I sign up?''

The Canadian women dropped one spot to No. 8 in the FIFA world rankings released Thursday. Casey Stoney's side won three of four games since the last rankings in March, defeating Haiti twice and splitting a two-game series with Argentina. Canada, North Korea and France, which fell one rung, complete the top 10. The Netherlands slipped out of the top 10, falling one spot to No. 11. There have been 168 women's internationals played since the March 6 rankings. Elsewhere, Colombia jumped three spots to No. 18, cracking the top 20 for the first time. Paraguay rose one place to No. 45, while Venezuela climbed three to No. 48 after a 3-1 win at New Zealand, which dropped one place to No. 33. Khalil Mack ‘couldn't give up on that dream' of winning with the Chargers
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — Khalil Mack mulled retirement early in the offseason. It didn't take long for him to decide to return to the Los Angeles Chargers. He agreed on a contract extension in March, never becoming an unrestricted free agent. 'Got tremendous leadership here, very familiar with guys already here,' he said Wednesday at minicamp. 'It was a no-brainer.' Mack, who turned 34 in February, is in his 12th season in the league and fourth with the Chargers. Despite nine Pro Bowl selections and a Defensive Player of the Year honor, he has never won a playoff game in five appearances. 'You're chasing that feeling of wanting to win,' Mack said. 'I couldn't give up on that dream and that goal for myself and the franchise.' Defensive coordinator Jesse Minter said having Mack return 'means everything.' 'Khalil is one of the best ever to do it,' he said. Mack was at the Chargers facility to train in February and March, setting a tone for his teammates. 'The impact that he had on other people to train at his level is pretty incredible,' Minter said. 'For young guys to have him around, it just makes everybody better.' Around the same time Mack re-signed, the Chargers released defensive end Joey Bosa. He later signed with the Buffalo Bills. 'I texted him the other day saying it was weird not having him in the room breaking the silence with his little awkward jokes,' Mack said. Second-year cornerback Tarheeb Still influenced Mack's decision to stay.
