Ingebrigtsen wins 3,000m gold to keep world indoor double bid alive - Omni sports
Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen produced a devastating final kick to win the 3,000m at the world indoor championships in Nanjing on Saturday to keep his quest for double gold on track.
Ingebrigtsen clocked 7min 46.09sec for victory in a thrilling race at Nanjing's Cube.
Ethiopian Berihu Aregawi, who won 10,000m silver at last year's Paris Olympics, claimed silver in 7:46.25 after leading for the bulk of the final lap. Australian Ky Robinson took bronze (7:47.09).
Ingebrigtsen will now turn his attention to his favoured 1,500m on Sunday in a bid to emulate Ethiopian legend Haile Gebrselassie, who achieved the 1,500/3,000m double in Maebashi, Japan, in 1999.
"I don't enjoy the 1,500m warm-up, but the racing is a lot of fun, and that's what I'm going to do tomorrow - have a lot of fun," said Ingebrigtsen.
A double Olympic champion and two-time world champion over 5,000m, Ingebrigtsen came into the competition on the back of victories in the 1,500 and 3,000m at the European indoor championships in Apeldoorn.
But, remarkably, a world indoor title had eluded the 24-year-old until he predictably took Saturday's race by the scruff of the neck in the dying metres.
In his last outing at a world indoors, Ingebrigtsen finished second in the 1,500m to Ethiopian Samuel Tefera in Belgrade in 2022. He then missed Glasgow last year with an achilles heel injury.
"It's always special to get a world medal, and even more so when it's one you haven't got before," said Ingebrigtsen.
"I would've probably wanted to go out to the front a little earlier. I felt like at that point, it's all about routines and having a smooth feeling.
"I felt strong at the end and generally I have a better finish than my competitors. It was a little bit of a fight, but I was confident that I could make a move in the last 100m and win, and ultimately that was the main goal."
Perfectly timed
Ingebrigtsen, as his wont, was happy to sit at the back of the 14-strong pack as German's Sam Parsons took up the running in Nanjing, splitting the pack into single file.
The Norwegian didn't linger long after Parsons' surge, shifting gears to move up through the field to take the lead with 11 laps to go.
Placing himself at the front, free of any potential problem with mid-pack traffic, Ingebrigtsen ceded to the Ethiopian duo of Biniam Mehary and Getnet Wale.
Ireland's Andrew Coscoran took the pack through with seven laps to run, Ingebrigtsen sat in fourth.
Kenya's Cornelius Kemboi surged through and suddenly Ingebrigtsen found himself somewhat boxed in in sixth.
With 600m to run, the Norwegian made his move, going wide to get clear and sit in Aregawi's shadow.
Shoulder-to shoulder, the pair went through the bell together, just a 200m sprint ahead of them to the finish line.
Aregawi looked like he had it, but the Norwegian was on the Ethiopian's coattails and bade his time brilliantly until the back straight, launching a perfectly timed final attack for a first world indoor gold.

Man City thrash Juventus to maintain 100% record at Club World Cup
The third straight victory for Pep Guardiola's side increases the chances of City avoiding a meeting with Real Madrid in the last 16 -- a fate that may now await Juventus. City and Juve will not know their opponent until the final pair of games in Group H conclude later on Friday. A positive day for City saw 2024 Ballon d'Or winner Rodri make his first start since rupturing his ACL in September and Guardiola's side, featuring several new faces, look significantly improved on the team which struggled to finish 13 points behind Premier League champions Liverpool last season. City were on top from the outset with a Bernardo Silva header forcing Juve keeper Michele Di Gregorio to save with his feet in the fifth minute. Four minutes later, Guardiola's new-look side had the lead when after a characteristic, patient build-up, Rayan Ait-Nouri split the Juve defence with a superb pass which Jeremy Doku collected and dispatched into the far corner. Juve were gifted an equaliser when City's Brazilian keeper Ederson's pass out was intercepted by Teun Koopmeiners who marched into the box and confidently fired home. Juve returned the gift though in the 26th minute when French defender Pierre Kalulu, under no pressure, turned a low cross from Matheus Nunes into his own net. A short but intense downpour just before half-time cooled the stadium down and Guardiola introduced his prolific Norwegian striker Erling Haaland at the break and it took just seven minutes for him to find the scoresheet. Tijjani Reijnders fed Matheus Nunes whose low cross found an unmarked Haaland in the middle and while it wasn't the cleanest of finishes from close range, the striker celebrated his 300th career goal. Rodri left the field in the 66th minute to applause as Ilkay Gundogan took over his role in the centre of midfield but City continued to over-run the Turin side. Haaland latched on to a long ball from Ederson and looked for fellow sub Phil Foden in the middle but put his cross beyond the England man only for Savinho to recover it and set-up Foden for a simple conversion. Savinho then made made it 5-1 when after a Haaland shot was saved by De Gregorio's feet, the Brazilian met the loose ball with a thundering drive which flew in off the underside of the bar. Juventus had created little but restored a little pride when Kenan Yildiz produced a lovely touch and clever pass to set Dusan Vlahovic free and the Serbian beat Ederson from the edge of the box. Elsewhere minnows Auckland City claimed a memorable draw against Boca Juniors while Los Angeles FC bowed out of the tournament with a stalemate against Flamengo. In Charlotte, Andreas Schjelderup scored the only goal for Benfica in their Group C clash with Bayern in front of 33,287 fans, finishing first-time from a cutback by his fellow Norwegian Fredrik Aursnes in the 13th minute. The German champions, who left the likes of Harry Kane and Michael Olise on the bench at kick-off, were unable to come back in sweltering afternoon conditions in heatwave-hit North Carolina. Kane and Olise came on at half-time and Bayern did then look more dangerous, but Leroy Sane was denied when clean through by Benfica's Ukrainian goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin. A draw would have allowed Bayern to top the section but a Kimmich effort that found the net was ruled out for offside and Trubin denied Sane again while Kane mistimed a header late on. It was Benfica's first ever win in 14 competitive meetings with Bayern and it meant they finished first and will next play Group D runners-up Chelsea in Charlotte in the last 16 on Saturday. "I think this was a very fair and important win, historic really," said Benfica coach Bruno Lage. "We were as straightforward and assertive as we should be and I think we were very effective in delivering our strategy today." Bayern finished second and so will go to Miami on Sunday to take on Brazilian giants Flamengo, with a potential quarter-final against European champions Paris Saint-Germain awaiting. "You could see that it was really tough conditions so respect to both teams for that," said Bayern coach Vincent Kompany. Benfica beat Bayern to top group C
Bayern, who had never lost to Benfica in a competitive game before, finish second in the group and will face Brazil's Flamengo in the last 16. Benfica will face the runner-up in Group D which will be Chelsea or Esperance. With Bayern already sure of their place in the knockout stage, their coach Vincent Kompany made seven changes to his starting line-up and it showed in a sloppy first half display. Only goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, defender Josip Stanisic, left-back Raphael Guerreiro and winger Serge Gnabry were kept from the team which beat Boca in the previous game Benfica needed a win or a draw to join Bayern in the next round and eliminate Boca Juniors, who were playing Auckland. The Lisbon side began brightly and Neuer was brought into action early to save a Renato Sanches effort from the edge of the box. Benfica grabbed the lead in the 13th minute when Frederik Aursnes got to the byline and pulled the ball back. Norwegian winger Andreas Schjelderup met it with a first time effort which he buried into the bottom corner. The game was played in intense heat which had an impact on the tempo of the game, with both teams playing at a slow pace and conserving energy. Bayern had one opportunity before the break when Gnabry pulled the ball back to Leroy Sane, but the former Manchester City winger fired high over the bar. Kompany, who knew his side risked losing top spot in the group, had seen enough from his back-up players and made a triple substitution at the break bringing on Harry Kane, Michael Olise and Joshua Kimmich. Suddenly, Bayern looked dangerous -- a long ball over to the top from Kimmich found Sane but with only the goalkeeper to beat he shot straight at Ukrainian Anatoliy Trubin. Trubin was in inspired form and kept out a dangerous effort from Thomas Muller but Benfica offered a reminder of their threat on the break when Kerem Akturkoglu beat Dayot Upamecano but could not get past Neuer. Kimmich had the ball in the net with a low drive from the edge of the box but Kane was in an offside position in the goalkeeper's line of vision and the effort was ruled out. Bayern pushed forward in search of a goal that could have sent them back to top of the group but Trubin was out fast again to deny Sane and deep in stoppage time Kane mis-timed a header from close range.
