Extra time under consideration for Lions series decider
SYDNEY - Rugby Australia chief Phil Waugh says the board of the British & Irish Lions is considering a proposal for sudden-death extra time should a deciding third test in the upcoming series finish in a draw.
In 2017, in one of the great anti-climaxes in the history of the game, the Lions ended up sharing series honours with the All Blacks after the deciding third test ended in a 15-15 draw.
Waugh said RA was keen to put the spectator experience at the heart of everything during the Lions tour so had suggested at meetings in London that 'golden point' extra time be played in such a situation.
"We've had some really constructive conversations. That's got to go to the Lions board around whether it's a drawn series, or you decide it through golden point or extra time," Waugh told the Sydney Morning Herald.
"Our preference, if we put the fans at the centre of everything we're doing, I think that the familiarity that everyone has with 'superpoint' and the interest for that in our market is a good guide.
"Obviously, we will be making sure both parties agree. But I think that if you're thinking about some fan engagement, that's certainly very appealing."In the case of a draw after 80 minutes in Super Rugby matches, teams play 10 minutes of "superpoint" extra time with any score immediately deciding the winner.
Waugh said both sides had agreed that the 20-minute red card, which has been played in the southern hemisphere for several seasons and made its debut in the Six Nations this year, would be the rule for the series.
"We've been very vocal in our support for the 20-minute red card," Waugh told the newspaper.
The Lions will play Argentina in Dublin on June 20 before three tests and six tour matches in Australia in June, July and August. REUTERS

Several senior players are to be rested for the two tests in Bulawayo with coach Shukri Conrad picking a 16-player squad to be led by captain Temba Bavuma. There is a first call-up for the batting duo Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Lesego Senokwane and fast bowler Codi Yusuf while hard-hitting Dewald Brevis and off-spinner Prenelan Subrayen return to the squad in search of a first cap. The 19-year-old Pretorius had a breakout domestic season in both first-class and Twenty20. He struck three centuries in five first-class games at an average of 72.66, while Senokwane, 28, was a significant run scorer in the Cricket South Africa 4-day competition. The 27-year-old Yusuf finished the domestic season with a bowling average of 22.39. The squad also sees the recall of batsman Zubayr Hamza, who last played a test against New Zealand in early 2024. United forecast adjusted core profit of between 180 million pounds ($244 million) and 190 million pounds for the year ending June, up from an earlier projection of between 145 million and 160 million pounds. Ticket sales jumped more than 50% to 44.5 million pounds in the three months to March as the club had a good run in the Europa League, before losing the finals to Tottenham Hotspur. United had their worst Premier League season since they were relegated in 1974 and hopes of participating in a European competition next season were dashed after they lost the Europa League final. "We had a difficult season in the Premier League, which we all know fell below our standards and we have a clear expectation of improvement next season," CEO Omar Berrada said in a statement. United's absence from European competitions, which are lucrative sources of broadcasting revenue, deals a huge blow to the club's future finances and has drawn anger and disappointment from fans worldwide. Jim Ratcliffe, who holds a stake of about 29% in the club and runs their football operations, has taken steps to revive the club's fortunes, including by cutting jobs, raising ticket prices and stopping free lunches at staff canteens. Those benefits are expected to be realised from the first quarter of the new fiscal year starting July, the club said on Friday. United reported a net loss of 2.7 million pounds for the three months ended March 31, compared with a loss of 71.5 million pounds a year earlier.
