Manipur tense after Meitei member's arrest; Local group declares 10-day shutdown
IMPHAL: Tensions escalated across the valley districts of Manipur following the arrest of Asem Kanan, a member of the Meitei group Arambai Tenggol, by the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Guwahati, on Sunday.
In a press release, CBI said: 'Kanan was arrested on Sunday at Imphal airport for his involvement in various criminal activities linked to the 2023 Manipur violence. His family has been informed of the arrest.'
The statement also mentioned that CBI is investigating cases related to the Manipur violence as per the directive of the Supreme Court of India. 'Due to the prevailing law-and-order situation, the trial of these cases has been shifted from Manipur to Guwahati,' it said.
CBI further confirmed that Kanan has been transported to Guwahati and will be produced before a competent court for police remand.
According to police officials familiar with the matter, Kanan was arrested along with four other Arambai Tenggol members on Saturday from Imphal. However, the CBI's official statement confirmed only the arrest of Kanan.
Meanwhile, violent protests erupted in Imphal city. Hundreds of demonstrators blocked major roads using burning tyres, wooden planks, and other debris. Security forces fired tear gas shells, mock bombs, and live rounds to disperse the crowds. Amid the chaos, a 13-year-old boy sustained serious injuries to his leg, reportedly from a tear gas shell explosion. He was evacuated to a nearby hospital.
From Saturday evening to 5.30 pm Sunday, at least 11 people were reported injured in connection with the unrest, with the situation continuing to deteriorate in the evening.
Security forces have been deployed at key locations across Imphal, including Palace Compound in Imphal East, and Keishampat Bridge, Moirangkhom, and Tiddim Road stretching up to Imphal airport in Imphal West.
Arambai Tenggol on Saturday announced a 10-day statewide shutdown demanding the unconditional release of the arrested volunteers.
Additionally, a women's group from Khurai in Imphal East issued a stern warning, demanding that 'all MLAs currently outside the state return to Imphal and form a new popular government by 6 pm on June 10.' The group declared that any MLA who fails to return by the deadline will not be allowed to re-enter the state.
As of 5.30 pm Sunday, the situation remained highly volatile in the valley districts, with security on high alert and public anger mounting.

FBI chief's 'hit a cop, you're going to jail' warning sparks online outrage
FBI Director Kash Patel faced backlash after issuing a stern warning to anti-ICE protesters in Los Angeles, cautioning that anyone assaulting cops or taking the law into their own hands would face jail time. "Hit a cop, you're going to jail. Doesn't matter where you came from, how you got here, or what movement speaks to you. If the local police force won't back our men and women on the thin blue line, we @FBI will," Patel had posted on X, warning the demonstrators after a wave of surprise immigration raids in Los Angeles on Friday triggered citywide protests, tense standoffs with police, and dozens of Social media users took a quick note of Kash Patel's warning to the protesters and hit back at the FBI chief, calling him out for the federal agency's different stance taken on the January 6 rioters, with one user saying, "unless you're doing it for Trump". Another user accused him of "overrunning an election".Most of the January 6 rioters were relieved of charges by US President Donald Trump after he took office for the second time this issued "full, complete and unconditional" pardons for around 1,500 people involved in the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol. The group included individuals convicted of violent acts. The move saw Trump fulfilling a campaign promise within the first few hours of his second online tirade against Kash Patel's stern warning continued as another user wrote, "But if you do it wearing Trump merch while rioting at the US Capitol, you'll get a pardon, right, Kash?" More people joined Patel's online bashing, with some of them sharing pictures and videos of rioters clashing with police on January 6, Kash Patel distanced himself from the pardoning of Capitol riots accused during his confirmation hearing as FBI director, saying, "I have always rejected any violence against law enforcement, and I have included in that group specifically addressed any violence against law enforcement on January 6"."I do not agree with the commutation of any sentence of any individual who committed violence against law enforcement," he from Patel, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also invited online ire for writing that the anti-ICE protests are "designed to prevent the removal of Criminal Illegal Aliens from US soil". Hegseth added, "a dangerous invasion facilitated by criminal cartels (aka Foreign Terrorist Organizations) and a huge NATIONAL SECURITY RISK".The Los Angeles raids were part of a broader push by the Trump administration to ramp up deportation efforts nationwide. Trump has vowed record-level removals of undocumented migrants, and White House aide Stephen Miller has reportedly urged ICE to make at least 3,000 arrests Watch

Bengaluru stampede: Police letter flagged lack of time to prepare for event at Vidhana Soudha
Even as a blame game has broken out between the police and the State government over mishaps during Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) victory celebrations, it has now emerged that the Vidhana Soudha security had flagged concerns of overcrowding, lack of time and shortage of security personnel for the felicitation for the team on the grand steps of Vidhana Soudha. This letter is the only document that shows the State Government overruled concerns raised by the Bengaluru City Police and went ahead with RCB victory celebrations. While it is true that no untoward incidents happened at the Vidhana Soudha event, police have argued an open-air event at the administrative nerve centre of the state, coupled with a unilateral announcement by RCB of a victory parade on June 4 morning, brought lakhs to the street, eventually leading to a stampede at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. The Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR) had written to DCP (Vidhana Soudha Security) on June 3 seeking an opinion on felicitation for the RCB team if they won in the IPL finals. Responding to this letter on June 4, M. N. Karibasavagowda, DCP (Vidhana Soudha Security), flagged concerns over 'lakhs of RCB fans gathering for the event' and said since there was a shortage of security personnel in the Vidhana Soudha division, making bandobast for the event could be a problem. He further says that there was a lack of time to deploy more personnel from outside the Vidhana Soudha Security unit to coordinate with Law and Order and Traffic Police. DCP Vidhana Soudha Security concludes that there was need of more time to hold the event at Vidhana Soudha, a vital installation following all rules, but says the police would abide by whatever decision the government takes. Multiple sources said that flagging a lack of time to prepare, the city police suggested that the victory celebrations be postponed to Sunday. However, they were overruled, sources said. Fresh unrest in Manipur as CBI arrests Arambai Tenggol leader Violence broke out across Manipur's Imphal Valley after a top leader of Arambai Tenggol, an armed Meitei radical group, was picked up by security forces on Saturday evening. Four others belonging to the Arambai Tenggol were reportedly detained for questioning. Members of the Arambai Tenggol clashed with security forces personnel when they went to pick up A. Kanan Singh, a former Manipur Police head constable. A volley of gunshots was heard and supporters of the group burnt tyres and old furniture on the road. Vehicles of the security forces were torched on the Airport Road, and scores of people, including security personnel, were injured. As the violence spread, the government clamped prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and suspended Internet and mobile data services in the five Imphal Valley districts of Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Kakching, and Thoubal for five days. The Arambai Tenggol, which came into prominence after the ethnic conflict between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities broke out in May 2023, countered by 'imposing' a 10-day shutdown across these five districts. Some youth, believed to be members of the group, threatened self-immolation by pouring inflammable fluids on themselves. By morning, however, the streets of Imphal and the valley beyond wore a deserted look. Hours later, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) issued a statement, saying it had arrested an Arambai Tenggol member at the Imphal Airport on Sunday. 'He was involved in various criminal activities related to Manipur violence in 2023. The information related to his arrest has been given to his family members,' the federal agency said, adding that it was investigating the Manipur violence cases according to the direction of the Supreme Court. 'The trial of the cases has been shifted to Guwahati in view of the law and order situation in Manipur. The said arrested member of Arambai Tenggol has been brought from Imphal to Guwahati, and he will be produced before the competent court for police remand. Investigation is continuing,' the CBI said. The day also saw a delegation of MLAs from various parties meet with Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at the Raj Bhavan. A statement from the Raj Bhavan later said the MLAs apprised the Governor of the current law and order situation in Manipur and sought his intervention to find an amicable solution. 'The Governor informed the delegation that all necessary steps are being taken to address the concerns and restore normalcy,' the statement said. Top security officials were present at the meeting. Meanwhile, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested 'three insurgents' in a case related to an attack on security forces that had killed two police commandos and injured several others. 'The three men, along with their associates, had planned, conspired, and executed the attack on an India Reserve Battalion post and security forces in Moreh, Tengnoupal district, on 17th January 2024,' the NIA said in a statement. The accused were identified as Thangminlen Mate, Kamginthang Gangte, and Hentinthang Kipgen alias Thangneo Kipgen. Manipur was relatively calm after the imposition of the President's Rule on February 13. The Imphal Valley descended into chaos over the alleged 'disrespect of Manipur' by security personnel on May 20. A 'civil disobedience campaign' launched by a pressure group thereafter was suspended when floods hit the valley more than a week ago. More than 250 people have been killed and at least 60,000 displaced in Manipur's ethnic violence. Write to EC formally: Poll panel sources on Rahul seeking reply on election rigging claim A day after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi sought the Election Commission's response on his article alleging rigging in Maharashtra polls, sources in the poll authority said on Sunday the constitutional body would respond only if the Leader of the Opposition writes to it directly. They also pointed out that as part of its outreach, the EC had invited all six national parties for separate interactions. While the other five met the EC brass, Congress cancelled the May 15 meeting. Gandhi had on Saturday hit back at the Election Commission after sources in the poll panel rejected allegation of rigging in the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly polls, saying evasion would not protect its credibility but telling the truth would. In an article, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha had alleged 'match-fixing' in the Maharashtra polls and claimed that it would next happen in the Bihar elections and 'anywhere the BJP is losing'. Responding to a question on Gandhi's demand for CCTV footage of polling stations in Maharashtra of the evening hours, the sources said as per instructions of the EC, the CCTV footage of polling stations can always be scrutinised by the competent high court when an election petition is filed. 'This is done by the EC to protect the integrity of elections as well as protect the privacy of voters. Why does Rahul Gandhi want to invade the privacy of voters, which is to be protected by the EC as per electoral laws?' a functionary responded. He said Gandhi should trust the high courts to deal with any discrepancy. They also said that by alleging fudging in the voters list, Gandhi has actually questioned booth-level agents appointed by his own party and polling and counting agents appointed by his own party's candidates in Maharashtra. In 2026, NDA will form governments in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal: Amit Shah Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday asserted that the NDA would form governments in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. Addressing party office bearers, he hailed Madurai as a city of 'Parivartan' and said his party's Karyakarta Sammelan (workers meet) would lead to change as well, of dislodging DMK from power. The DMK's corrupt rule has affected the poor, women and children in Tamil Nadu, Shah alleged, and urged his party members to resolve to dislodge the Stalin-led Dravidian party government from the seat of power. At least two classrooms in each school across Tamil Nadu could have been built with sum equivalent to TASMAC irregularities. Also, the Union Home Minister dared Stalin to explain if he has fulfilled all of DMK's 2021 poll assurances. 'In the 2026 Assembly election, the BJP-AIADMK will form the NDA Government in Tamil Nadu, and people will defeat the DMK in the 2026 polls,' he said. 'The DMK is a 100% failure Government,' he added. 'In 2026, in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, the NDA will form governments,' he said. Shah also said, 'The BJP government at the Centre provided ₹6.80 lakh crore in 10 years, and yet Chief Minister M.K. Stalin asks what the Centre has done for T.N.' Shah, before addressing the state, district and mandal level office bearers, chaired the meeting of the state core committee of the Tamil Nadu BJP. Ahead of leading the core panel parleys, he worshipped at the Madurai Meenakshi temple. During his April visit to Tamil Nadu, Shah announced the revival of ties with the AIADMK. In his address, BJP state president Nainar Nagendran hit out at the DMK regime over the law and order scenario and questioned the police over targeted killings of elderly people in villages in the western Kongu region. He appealed to cadres to work with determination and described the alliance with AIADMK as a 'suitable alliance'. Nagendran said his resolve will be to take the maximum number of MLAs to the Assembly, like a 'yatra'. He hailed Amit Shah as 'India's Iron Man, another Sardar Vallabhai Patel.' BJP leader K. Annamalai said the only goal is unseating DMK from power in the state and urged cadres to go ahead with this 'sankalpa' (resolution). Shah arrived in Madurai on Saturday night, his second crucial visit to Tamil Nadu in two months, to rev up the party machinery ahead of the 2026 Assembly election in the state. His visit has materialised exactly a week after the ruling DMK conducted its crucial general council meeting here, targeting the BJP and passing resolutions condemning the Centre. Former UK minister Tulip Siddiq seeks meeting with Bangladesh's Yunus over corruption allegations
Former UK minister Tulip Siddiq has sought a meeting with Bangladesh's Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus in London to clear up a 'misunderstanding' over corruption allegations against her. read more Former UK minister Tulip Siddiq has requested a meeting with Bangladesh's Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus during his upcoming visit to London to clarify what she described as a 'misunderstanding' related to corruption allegations. In a letter dated June 4, Siddiq asked Yunus for a chance to speak with him during his four-day UK visit from June 10 to 13. Yunus is scheduled to meet King Charles and Labour leader Keir Starmer at Downing Street during the trip. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The request comes in the wake of corruption allegations made by Dhaka's authorities, including claims that Siddiq or her mother improperly received a 7,200 sq ft land allotment by exploiting political influence. The accusations, aired prominently in Bangladeshi media, stem from an ongoing investigation by the country's Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). Siddiq is the niece of Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh's former prime minister who was recently tried in absentia on charges of crimes against humanity stemming from her 15-year tenure. Bangladeshi officials have accused Siddiq of having benefited from her family ties to Hasina's administration — an assertion Siddiq strongly denies. Siddiq said she believes that a direct conversation could help address claims made by Bangladesh's anti-corruption commission, which she says wrongly implied she has to answer for alleged misconduct involving her aunt, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. 'I am a UK citizen, born in London and representing the people of Hampstead and Highgate in parliament for the last decade. I have no property nor any business interests whatsoever in Bangladesh,' she said. 'I have sought to clarify this to the ACC, but they refuse to engage with my lawyers in London and apparently keep sending correspondence to a random address in Dhaka,' she said. Siddiq, accused of benefiting from the regime led by deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina, was forced to resign from the UK government following the accusations. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Siddiq's aunt, Hasina, was put on trial in absentia last week over crimes against humanity during her 15-year rule as prime minister. The ACC claimed Siddiq or her mother had received a 7,200 sq ft plot of land through 'abuse of power and influence'. Siddiq has denied the allegations, with her lawyers describing them as 'politically motivated' and without foundation. She further claimed not to have been contacted by the authorities over any of the allegations, Prothom Alo reported. She was cleared of any wrongdoing by the adviser on ministerial standards, Laurie Magnus, but resigned as economic secretary to the Treasury and city minister over the 'distraction' being caused for Keir Starmer's new government. Siddiq claimed she was being targeted by a 'politically motivated smear campaign' orchestrated by Hasina's opponents. The British MP is yet to receive any response to the letter from Yunus or his office, BD News quoted a source close to Tulip as saying. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD According to the source, Tulip does not understand why the ACC is after her. Last month, a warrant was issued in Bangladesh for Siddiq's arrest. She claims to have no knowledge of any such warrant or court hearings to which she was required to appear. As a 2B extradition country, the UK requires ministers and judges to see clear evidence from Bangladesh before they make an arrest decision. Arrest warrants have also been issued for Tulip's mother, Rehana, and her siblings, all of whom deny the allegations. With inputs from agencies
