10 Days On, No Trace Of Missing Indore Couple In Meghalaya; Search Continues

The Meghalaya government is mulling to call in paramilitary forces to assist in the search for the Madhya Pradesh couple who went missing in the state while honeymooning.
Ten days have passed since newlywed couple from Indore – Raja Raghuwanshi (30) and Sonam Raghuwanshi (27), who came to rain-soaked hills of Sohra (Cherrapunji) for their honeymoon – went missing, and still there is no sign of them.
The search operation for them is still underway as about 50 individuals consisting of police personnel, SDRF teams as well as local villagers are searching in the dangerous cliffs and forests for the newlywed couple near Shillong, the officials said.
In addition, K9 sniffer dogs and drones have been deployed to locate them in difficult to reach areas.
Meanwhile, the Meghalaya government is mulling to call in paramilitary forces to assist in the search for the missing couple. 'We are contemplating to call in rescuers from paramilitary forces to trace the couple," East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem told news agency PTI.
The family has also announced a reward of Rs 5 lakh for anyone who comes up with information about their whereabouts.
How The Couple Went Missing?
Raja was a 30-year-old transport businessman, who had married Sonam merely weeks ago. The duo embarked on their honeymoon on May 20, where Guwahati was their first stop.
The couple arrived in Mawlakhiat village on May 22 on a rented scooter. They trekked over 3,000 steps down the gorge to visit the famous living root bridges in Nongriat village, where they stayed the night, according to police.
On May 23, the family last heard from them. The family members said that the mobile phones of the couple were switched off after their last conversation.
The fear turned into panic when the couple's rented scooter was found abandoned near Osara Hills in Sohra Rim — a far-off area known to be dangerous and linked to criminal activity. Two of their bags were later found partly hidden in bushes inside a nearby gorge on last week.
The places where their scooter, bags, and last tea stop were found are far apart, making the situation even more puzzling.
The authorities are now narrowing down their search near a gorge close to the Root Bridge, nearly 50 km from the capital city of Meghalaya.
Madhya Pradesh MPs Shankar Lalwani and Sumer Singh Solanki reviewed the rescue operations with DGP I Nongrang and Chief Secretary DP Wahlang, and expressed satisfaction with the efforts.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has assured that the state machinery is doing everything to trace the couple and he is personally monitoring the operation.
However, due to heavy rains across the North Eastern Region and more so in Sohra for the entire past week has made it difficult for teams to move forward or go deeper into forests, near streams and various trekking routes.
Earlier this year, Hungarian tourist Puskas Zsolt went missing soon after he started his trek to the living roots bridge. His body was found dead 12 days later. Medical reports indicated that he died due to a fall.
The state government has issued a slew of safety advisories for tourists in view of the bad weather conditions.
The Shillong-Dawki road, where construction work is underway, has temporarily been closed. Vehicular movement was affected across the region, with landslides and flash floods being reported from many places.

Sion police bust illegal call centre in Delhi, nab 1

Mumbai: Sion police have busted an illegal call centre operating out of Delhi and arrested its proprietor. They also issued notices to seven accomplices for impersonating bankers and, under the pretext of updating the KYC of credit/debit cards, duping people across India. Police uncovered the racket following a complaint from a Sion businessman who was defrauded of over Rs 4.5 lakh. In May, the complainant received a call from an unknown person who identified himself as a representative of a private bank. Under the pretext of updating his KYC, during the 50-minute call, the fraudster used social engineering tactics and digital tools to siphon off over Rs 4.5 lakh from his credit card. The victim lodged a complaint with Sion police who traced the SIM card to Krishna Bhatia (22) and his relative Hardik Bhatia in Faridabad, Haryana. Police learnt that multiple SIM cards in their names were handed over to Prince Kumar, who then passed them to Ayush Sharma in Shahjahanpur, UP. Eventually, the SIMs were delivered to the alleged mastermind, Manjit Kumar (29), who ran the illegal call centre at Uttamnagar in Delhi. Sion police, with the help of their Delhi counterparts, raided the call centre and arrested Kumar. He was brought to the city and produced before the Kurla court. — S Ahmed Ali

Surat: A gang extorted Rs 3.4 crore from the sarpanch of Mandir village in Jalalpore taluka of Navsari district, by threatening to kill him and his two sons. Devang Desai (52) was shown firearms and threatened into paying the money, starting in Oct 2023. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Jalalpore police have booked three persons for extortion and criminal intimidation. Navsari superintendent of police Sushil Agrawal handed over the investigation to the local crime branch (LCB). According to the FIR, Desai is a farmer and has been sarpanch of Mandir village for three years. He lives with his mother, wife and two sons. In Oct 2023, he received a call from an Amalsad man, Rajesh alias Mohammad Isaq Memon, who expressed interest in buying Desai's land. When Desai went to meet him, Memon showed him a gun and told him that he had got a 'supari' (murder contract) to kill him and his sons, for Rs 20 lakh. Memon demanded Rs 60 lakh to not kill Desai and his sons. He later agreed to settle for Rs 40 lakh. Desai paid him the money within a month, after selling nine bighas of his land. Days later, Desai got a call from Memon, who told him to speak to his boss and handed over his phone. One 'Rajabhai from Mumbai' told Desai that he would save him and his sons and tell him who put out the murder contract when they met. A week later, Memon called Desai to the Ashapuri temple and from there took him to a deserted spot where a black car was parked. They got into the car and met 'Rajabhai' and one 'Sherabhai', who was holding a gun. Rajabhai threatened Desai, saying he would have to pay Rs 5 crore to not be killed. When Desai told them he did not have the money, they told him to pay Rs 3 crore. A few days later, Memon called Desai and told him that he had paid Rs 3 crore to Rajabhai and demanded the money. Desai had recently got Rs 1.7 crore from the sale of two land parcels, which he gave to Memon. He also borrowed Rs 42 lakh from Bank of Baroda by putting up gold as collateral and gave that money to Memon. He mortgaged his dairy land for Rs 34 lakh and borrowed Rs 42 lakh from relatives, paying a total of Rs 3 crore to Memon by Dec 2024. A few months later, he read a news article on people who had been cheated in Navsari and found the names similar to those who had extorted the money from him. He filed a complaint with police on Monday.
