Raja of Perlis rebukes civil servants putting self above public
ARAU: The Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail, today voiced his disapproval over the attitude of certain civil servants in the state, who were found to be placing personal interests above public service.
In this regard, His Royal Highness urged these civil servants to enhance their work ethic, including better management of office hours, to set a positive example and uphold the integrity of the public service.
'There are civil servants who prioritise self-interest over the welfare of the people. I have received reports, and I have personally experienced their work attitudes. However, change is not impossible, and they must be willing to change themselves before they are forced to change. So, change your work culture,' the ruler said.
'I urge these civil servants to follow the good example set by their colleagues. I hope those involved understand the message I am conveying,' said Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin in his royal address at the state investiture ceremony, held in conjunction with the ruler's 82nd birthday celebration at Istana Arau, today.
Also gracing the ceremony were the Raja Perempuan of Perlis, Tuanku Tengku Fauziah Tengku Abdul Rashid; Raja Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail and Raja Puan Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Dr Hajah Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil.
The Raja of Perlis wanted the state to progress alongside others, and not be left behind, emphasising that everyone must diligently perform their duties, to ensure that the state's administration drives development effectively.
At the investiture ceremony, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin conferred state awards and medals to 25 recipients, a number symbolically chosen to mark the Silver Jubilee celebration, commemorating 25 years of his reign as the Ruler of Perlis, observed from April 17 this year until April 16, 2026.

He envisions the new Sarawak State Archives complex as one of the most advanced in the region, fully equipped to store both physical and digital copies of significant documents. 'This initiative reflects the state government's commitment to safeguarding Sarawak's historical legacy for future generations,' he said. Abang Johari revealed that the state has secured several documents from the Historical Archives and the Museum of London, which have been requested for permanent housing in the new archive facility. In addition, the Premier announced that the State Library will introduce a second international-themed resource centre – the USA Corner – following the success of the Canada Corner. On the broader theme of digital inclusion, he emphasised the state's commitment to leveraging digital technologies to empower rural communities across Sarawak. 'Digital approaches must now become a priority in making learning more accessible and engaging, especially for remote areas where literacy remains a challenge,' he said. To this end, the Premier underscored the importance of adopting innovative strategies, noting that rural villages without access to books could benefit from digital platforms. 'In places without books, we can deploy digital solutions in rural areas,' he said, citing the successful implementation of weekend activity centres involving village leaders, similar to the Pusat Aktiviti Warga Emas programme, as a model for introducing digital tools and promoting community learning. 'A new approach is needed, one that makes learning more engaging and enjoyable for villagers. 'If learning is limited to just reading, it becomes dull. Therefore, interaction and creativity are essential when communicating in a digital environment.' He also expressed optimism regarding the S Pay Global e-wallet's role in facilitating the disbursement of aid under the Sumbangan Keperluan Asas Sarawak (SKAS) initiative, which he believes will accelerate digital adoption among senior citizens. Perlis assembly building renamed as Kompleks Seri Putra
KANGAR: The Perlis state assembly complex here has been renamed as Kompleks Seri Putra, officially announced by the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail. In his speech, His Royal Highness said he was pleased to announce the new name of the complex, which took the name of his father, the late Tuanku Syed Putra. "My late father was the first Raja of Perlis on the throne since the Perlis Constitution was drafted on Feb 1, 1948, coinciding with the birth of the Federation of Malaya. "Until now, the Perlis Constitution, which was completed on March 26, 1959, is still in use as a result of the wisdom and legacy of His late Highness' rule. "Under His late Highness' reign, the Perlis State Assembly was formed and the State Legislative Council Election was held on Sept 24, 1955, with nine seats. It is fitting that His late Highness' services are remembered and honoured," said Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin at a tea ceremony with the people in conjunction with his 82nd birthday celebration at the complex on Monday (May 19). The text of Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin's speech was read by the Raja Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail.
