U.S. Airlines Are Reportedly Charging Solo Travelers More for Plane Tickets—Here's What You Need to Know
While traveling alone can be enticing and relaxing, new data reveals it might also be more expensive.
U.S. airlines are allegedly charging single passengers higher fares than couples or families, according to a new report from the booking site Thrifty Traveler. The travel data team recently compared the price of a single-ticket purchase versus that of two or more tickets. In multiple instances, the single-ticket purchase was more expensive per passenger.
In one example, the report showed how a United Airlines flight from Chicago's O'Hare International Airport (ORD) to General Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport (PIA) cost $269 for a one-way ticket for a person traveling alone. But when the same route was booked for two people, the price dropped to $181 per person. The team also noted that a single fare on an American Airlines flight that was priced at $422 dropped to $266 per person when multiple tickets were booked.
'It's just another way for airlines to continue 'segmenting' their customers, charging business travelers paying with a corporate card more while offering a better deal to families on the exact same flight," Thrifty Traveler executive editor Kyle Potter said in the article.
The report also notes that the phenomenon doesn't appear to be a widespread occurrence, and may be a limited-time test, or may only appear on select routes.
After the report was released, dozens of flyers and aviation enthusiasts confirmed the findings independently.
Jeff Rossen, a consumer correspondent and the host of the Rossen Reports, shared his experience of seeing higher fares for single tickets on social media.
'I picked a random round-trip flight, and the first one I picked, boom … a giant $240.93 price difference,' Rossen told Travel + Leisure . 'Same flights. Same cabin.' He also said booking websites may use other clues to potentially generate higher fares and prices for certain customers. 'Airlines can track your search history and apply different prices based on it,' Rossen said. 'So, clear your cache and cookies before logging into the airline. Better yet, search in incognito mode to avoid price hikes targeting you.'
At the time of publication, neither American Airlines nor United Airlines provided a comment to T+L. In the meantime, if you're traveling alone, experts recommend setting up price alerts to save some cash. Alternatively, you could consider flying into other nearby (often smaller) airfields that may be less expensive.

3 Top Tech Stocks to Buy in June
Nvidia's recent earnings results show that the AI train remains full speed ahead. The Trade Desk quickly put a Q4 hiccup behind it with stellar Q1 2025 performance. Meta Platforms continues to produce, with AI growth opportunities on the horizon. 10 stocks we like better than Nvidia › After a rocky couple of months in the stock market due to uncertainty regarding U.S. trade policy, it seems the storm clouds, for now, are beginning to part. Meanwhile, some of the leading technology companies continue to demonstrate stellar business performance. It's never a bad idea to invest slowly and steadily in quality stocks that go out and earn your capital. Here are some of the top technology stocks that you should consider nibbling on in June. Recent earnings from Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) show that artificial intelligence (AI) momentum is alive and well. The company's leadership in AI data center chips continues to drive staggering growth, including a 69% year-over-year increase in revenue in Q1 of Nvidia's fiscal year 2026, a 12% rise from the previous three months. Nvidia beat analyst estimates for both revenue and earnings, and its Q2 guidance was roughly on par with Wall Street's expectations, despite a forecast $8 billion revenue loss due to government restrictions on chip sales to China. Nvidia's growth continues to highlight the ongoing investments companies are making in hardware to build the infrastructure needed to fuel widespread AI adoption over the coming years, as well as in upcoming industries, such as robotics and autonomous vehicles. Analysts estimate that Nvidia will grow earnings by an average of 29% annually over the long term, which easily justifies buying perhaps the world's leading AI stock at its recent price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 48. It sounds dramatic to call AI a once-in-a-lifetime growth opportunity, but Nvidia, at least for now, continues to justify the hype with its business results. Independent adtech company The Trade Desk (NASDAQ: TTD) took quite a tumble after an uncharacteristically poor quarter in Q4 of last year. The company's technology platform enables companies to purchase digital ad inventory, match it with their target audience, and track the performance of their ads. It's a leading alternative for advertisers beyond the powerful, but closed, ecosystems of Google (Alphabet) or Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META). However, the stock has begun to rebound. The Trade Desk's Q1 2025 results blew by analyst estimates, an encouraging sign that the business remains in tip-top shape in a digital advertising market that continues to grow. The Trade Desk has transitioned about two-thirds of its customers to its new Kokai platform, which utilizes AI algorithms to help advertisers optimize their programmatic ad spending and campaign performance. The Trade Desk has a long track record of profitable growth, and a trillion-dollar global advertising market offers plenty of runway for that to continue. The stock's enterprise value-to-sales ratio was a steep 29 at the end of last year. It has since dropped to 14, allowing investors to buy this adtech winner at a significant discount to its previous valuation. Social media is a massive advertising landscape, and Meta Platforms has dominated it for years. The company's family of apps -- Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Threads -- has a staggering 3.43 billion daily active users. It's a cash cow that generated more than $10 billion in free cash flow in Q1 2025 alone, which is remarkable considering the billions of dollars Meta Platforms is investing in AI projects. Meta Platforms continues to grow its user base and core advertising business. However, its AI projects could be game changers over the next decade. CEO Mark Zuckerberg is attempting to create a new consumer ecosystem beyond smartphones, featuring augmented reality headsets and smart glasses. Additionally, Meta developed and open-sourced its foundational AI model, Llama, which crossed 1 billion downloads in March. Analysts expect Meta Platforms to grow its earnings by an average of 18% annually over the long term, and there may be upside to that as its AI investments eventually bare fruit. The "Magnificent Seven" stock trades at a P/E of about 25, which is arguably a bargain for a company with its anticipated growth, and one of the most dominant core businesses you'll find. Prediction: This Artificial Intelligence (AI) Stock Could Be the Next Great Value Play
This value opportunity is a member of the "Magnificent Seven." Although its business model is uncertain, investors are likely underestimating the company's ability to redefine itself. 10 stocks we like better than Alphabet › As most investors know, some stocks in artificial intelligence (AI) have stood out for their outsized gains. The recent returns on stocks like Nvidia and Palantir are a testament to the transformative power of that technology. But those successes do not mean every AI stock sells at a premium. In fact, investors might be surprised to learn that many of these stocks do not command premium valuations, and that lack of buying has made the opportunity particularly compelling in one stock. Perhaps one of the more surprising AI value plays is Google parent Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL) (NASDAQ: GOOG). Alphabet has applied AI in its applications since 2001, and before the rise of ChatGPT, investors typically considered Alphabet a top AI stock. Today, perceptions are much different. It now sells at a P/E ratio of about 19. That makes it the cheapest stock in the "Magnificent Seven," and many investors would now consider it a value stock. The uncertainty now surrounding Alphabet makes the low valuation understandable in some respects. OpenAI's ChatGPT seemed to take Alphabet by surprise. Although it responded by launching Google Gemini soon after, Alphabet appears to lag ChatGPT competitively. ChatGPT also presents a problem for Google Search. ChatGPT directed users to desired websites based on keywords, and Alphabet derived revenue from this process by selling advertising. Unfortunately for Alphabet, generative AI platforms like ChatGPT merely return information often compiled from multiple sites. While some users may still visit the sites from which AI platforms source material, many users never go to the sites, which reduces the ability to sell ads and presumably undermines long-established business models. Consequently, Google Search's market share is now below 90% for the first time in years, according to Oberlo. With 74% of Alphabet's revenue still coming from advertising in the first quarter of 2025, that trend could bode poorly for the company over time. Nonetheless, other attributes of the company should lead investors to question whether the company is oversold at the aforementioned 19 P/E ratio. The AI giant has worked for years to reduce its dependence on advertising. In the year-ago quarter, advertising accounted for 77% of overall revenue, and that percentage dropped over the last year even though ad revenue grew by 8% during that time. The most prominent non-advertising enterprise under its umbrella is Google Cloud, which now makes up almost 14% of the company's revenue. Moreover, Alphabet owns numerous businesses not discussed in its quarterly report, including Verily Life Sciences, Google DeepMind, and Fitbit. Still, one Alphabet-owned enterprise showing particular promise is the autonomous driving company Waymo. A recent funding round valued Waymo at $45 billion, indicating its potential to be a major revenue driver under Alphabet's umbrella. Alphabet has also invested heavily in itself. In 2025, it pledged to spend $75 billion in capital expenditures (capex). To finance that cost, it has $95 billion in liquidity. It also generated $75 billion in free cash flow over the previous 12 months, a figure that does not include capex. That ability to generate cash makes it possible to invest heavily in itself, likely improving its AI technology and making it competitive in other tech-related fields. Considering Alphabet's low P/E ratio and tremendous resources, investors should likely be adding shares at current levels. The rise of ChatGPT does put pressure on its ad business and may force Alphabet to diversify its revenue sources more quickly than it had planned. But Alphabet is investing tremendous amounts of money back into its business. That investment could improve its AI capabilities, and investors should not yet count it out in this industry. Its ability to fund itself should also make investors optimistic about Alphabet's future. If the company improves its AI and successfully develops new revenue sources like Waymo, investors may find themselves feeling glad they bought Alphabet while it was still a value stock. Before you buy stock in Alphabet, consider this: The Motley Fool Stock Advisor analyst team just identified what they believe are the for investors to buy now… and Alphabet wasn't one of them. Why Pacers-Thunder is (almost) the most unlikely NBA Finals ever
Why Pacers-Thunder is (almost) the most unlikely NBA Finals ever Yahoo Sports contributing NBA writer Tom Haberstroh and NBA writer Dan Devine discuss the unlikely paths for Indiana and Oklahoma City to make this year's championship series — and look at the minuscule odds that bookmakers had for this matchup coming into the season. View more Video Transcript This week's big number, Dan is 1%. Advertisement As in, that is the likelihood that we would have seen a Pacers, Thunder, NBA finals based on where they were preseason and how Vegas and bet MGM saw the whole landscape, the title contender landscape. 99% of the time, this doesn't happen, but we got that 1% and you're asking yourself, has there been an NBA Finals matchup that was this unlikely, a 1% chance. Based on preseason odds. And the answer is that this is one of the biggest long shot NBA Finals matchups we've seen in a very long time. The only one that we've had, Dan, that can best this, believe it or not, is the 2022 NBA Finals matchup of the Golden State Warriors and the Boston Celtics. Advertisement So, according to sports Um, in 2022, Dan, Boston was coming off a 500 season. Brad Stevens is out, he moves upstairs to the front office. This guy Emi Udoka takes over for this, this team. Kemba Walker's out. They traded him for an old Al Horford. What are the chances that Al Horford can, can still have enough juice left to run to the NBA finals and maybe win a championship for them. Yeah, there was a lot of skepticism about that Boston Celtics team. They were listed at + 2000 to win the East in 2022 before the season. That was the sixth shortest odds behind the favorite, of course, Brooklyn, behind Milwaukee, Philly, Miami, and Atlanta, also more likely to make the NBA Finals preseason in 2022. Advertisement And then on the other side, the Golden State Warriors. Like they were two years removed from being like one of the worst teams in the. NBA getting the James Wiseman pick and they were not expected to be the favorite coming out of the Western Conference. So outside that, that had like a 0.9% chance rather than a 1, like solid 1% chance. So this is a matchup that we wouldn't have expected, but kind of likely in some senses of what these two teams can do and what they've proven. This is a really interesting finals.
