Indian Army contingent arrives in Mongolia for Exercise Khaan Quest
The Indian Army contingent arrived in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, on Wednesday (June 11, 2025) to participate in the multinational military exercise Khaan Quest, scheduled to be conducted from June 14 to 28.
The annual exercise brings together military forces from across the globe to collaborate and enhance their peacekeeping capabilities. The previous edition of Khaan Quest was held in Mongolia from July 27 to August 9, 2024.
The exercise, which began as a bilateral initiative between the United States and the Mongolian Armed Forces in 2003, evolved into a multinational peacekeeping endeavour from 2006 onwards. The current edition marks the 22nd iteration of the exercise, the Ministry of Defence said.
'The Indian Army contingent comprising 40 personnel is being represented mainly by troops from a Battalion of the Kumaon Regiment along with personnel from other arms and services. One woman officer and two women soldiers will also form part of the contingent,' the Ministry stated.
The aim of the exercise is to prepare the Indian armed forces for peacekeeping operations in a multinational setting, thereby 'increasing interoperability and military readiness in peace support operations under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter.'
According to the Ministry, the tactical drills to be undertaken will include the establishment of static and mobile checkpoints, cordon and search operations, patrolling, evacuation of civilians from hostile areas, counter-improvised explosive device (IED) drills, combat first aid, and casualty evacuation.

Mid-air escape: Air India London-Delhi flight entered Iran airspace as Israel struck with missiles; rerouted over Iraq
NEW DELHI: An Air India flight from London to New Delhi had just entered Iranian airspace when Israel launched a wave of missile strikes on Iran's military and nuclear sites. The flight was rerouted over Iraq before arriving in India one hour late, according to an AFP report. The close call was one of several disruptions on Friday as Air India diverted or turned back at least 16 international flights mid-air due to the sudden escalation and subsequent closure of Iranian airspace. Among those affected were services between India and cities like London, Toronto, and New York. Aircraft tracking site Flight Aware showed that two other Air India flights — from Delhi to Vienna and Mumbai to London — were nearing Iranian airspace and turned back to their origin airports shortly after the strikes began. In a statement, Air India said: 'Due to the emerging situation in Iran, the subsequent closure of its airspace and in view of the safety of our passengers, the following Air India flights are either being diverted or returning to their origin. We regret the inconvenience caused to our passengers due to this unforeseen disruption and are making every effort to minimise it.' The airline is offering full refunds or complimentary rescheduling to affected passengers and is arranging accommodation where necessary. The Indian Embassy in Iran also issued an advisory urging Indian nationals and people of Indian origin to stay alert and avoid non-essential travel, as tensions surged following Israel's precision strikes targeting Iranian defence infrastructure. Iran, Israel, Iraq, Jordan, and Syria temporarily shut down their airspace, leading to widespread cancellations and rerouting of global flights to and from the Middle East. Global airlines suspended flights to Tel Aviv and Tehran as air traffic over the region thinned out overnight. Israel said the strikes were a direct response to the growing threat from Iran's missile and nuclear capabilities. Iran retaliated by launching a wave of drones toward Israeli territory.

On Thursday, June 12, 2025, the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, carrying 242 people, crashed shortly after takeoff in Ahmedabad's Meghani Nagar area near Sardar Vallabhai Patel International Airport at around 1:40 pm, killing 241 people on board. Following the crash, Air India shared details regarding the incident on the social media platform X. The airline wrote, 'The aircraft crashed shortly after take-off. We regret to inform that, of the 242 aboard, there are 241 confirmed fatalities. The sole survivor is being treated in a hospital.' Air India further informed, 'The passengers comprised 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, 7 Portuguese nationals and 1 Canadian national. The survivor is a British national of Indian origin.' Former Chief Minister of Gujarat, Vijay Rupani, was one of the 241 individuals on board who died in the unfortunate crash. The central government has set up a high-level committee to investigate the Air India plane crash, which will submit the report in three months. The Committee will review the existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and guidelines issued to prevent and manage such occurrences and propose comprehensive guidelines for addressing similar instances in the future, the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation informed on Friday. 'The Committee will not be a substitute to other enquiries being conducted by relevant organisations but will focus on formulating SOPs for preventing and handling such occurrences in the future,' the Ministry of Civil Aviation stated on X. The high-level committee headed by Home Secretary will include secretary or joint secretary of the Home Affairs ministry, Secretary of Civil Aviation, representative from the Gujarat home department, representative from the state disaster response authority, police commissioner of Ahmedabad, the Director General (DG), Inspection and Safety of the Indian Air Force, DG of Bureau of Civil Aviation Security, DG of the aviation regulator- the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, special director of Intelligence Bureau (IB), Director of Directorate of Forensic Science Services.
