40th annual Torch Run to honor fallen HPD officer, support Special Olympics Hawaii
HONOLULU (KHON2) — This year marks the 40th anniversary of the first Hawaiian Bank Troy Barboza Law Enforcement Torch Run, which honors a fallen police officer and helps support a great cause.

'It's truly an incredible milestone that fills all of us with gratitude and pride,' said Dan Epstein, the President and CEO of Special Olympics Hawaii. 'For 40 years, this event has been more than a tradition – it's been a symbol of unity, hope, and the belief that every person deserves a chance to shine. What started as a small group of officers running in support of our athletes has grown into a powerful, statewide movement involving thousands of law enforcement volunteers from every island. It's a testament to the heart of Hawaii, where people come together, year after year, to stand up for inclusion and show our athletes that they are valued, seen, and celebrated.'
According to the Honolulu Police Department, Officer Troy Barboza was shot to death on October 22, 1987, in his home. The culprit was a suspect previously arrested and charged as a result of an undercover narcotic investigation conducted by Officer Barboza.

The festival begins at 5 p.m. on June 6, with the program beginning at 6:30 p.m. and the Torch Run to follow. The fundraising helps support the 55th Annual State Summer Games for Special Olympics Hawaii, which runs from June 6 to June 8.
Officials said they'll have hundreds of athletes from across the state come together to compete in sports like track and field, swimming, softball and powerlifting.
'The weekend kicks off with softball games and our Opening Ceremonies at Les Murakami Stadium on Friday night, where the Flame of Hope arrives,' Epstein said. 'Saturday is packed with competition and events – including swimming, track, powerlifting, and our Healthy Athletes and Young Athletes programs – and then we end the day with softball finals and our Victory Dance. On Sunday, we wrap up with more competition and Closing Ceremonies at each event site. Our State Summer Games is really a celebration of everything Special Olympics Hawaii is about – inclusion, determination, and community – and we welcome everyone to come out and cheer on our incredible athletes.'

Photo of bomb threat found on Allegiant flight at PIE released, FBI continues search for suspect
The Brief The FBI is seeking public assistance in identifying the person behind a bomb threat on an Allegiant flight at St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport. The FBI's Tampa Field Office released a photo of the bomb threat, which was found written on a lavatory door on an Allegiant Airlines flight on April 25. Operations at the airport were shut down for hours that night after the incident. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - More than a month after an Allegiant Airlines flight attendant found a bomb threat just before taking off from St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport, the FBI is continuing to search for the person responsible. The FBI's Tampa Field Office released a photo of the bomb threat, which was found written on a lavatory door on an Allegiant Airlines flight on April 25. It comes as they seek the public's assistance in finding the person who wrote it. Follow FOX 13 on YouTube The backstory Allegiant passenger onboard flight #2006, which was departing PIE, headed to Cincinnati, Ohio. But as the plane was taxiing from the gate just before departing, a flight attendant found the message on the lavatory door. The pilot, then, immediately stopped the plane and helped work to evacuate passengers, authorities said. The passengers were quickly deplaned, and the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office swarmed the airport and spent hours that night searching multiple flights for anything suspicious. Officials said at the time, nothing was found. Kenosha day care employee accused of child abuse, 'staging' accident
The Brief An Illinois woman is charged with child abuse, and prosecutors say she tried to stage an accident to cover up the abuse. 26-year-old Nour Al Thafiri was arrested on Tuesday, June 3, after a weeks-long investigation by Kenosha police. Her bond was set at $10,000. KENOSHA, Wis. - Kenosha prosecutors charged a daycare worker with child abuse, saying she staged an accident. That woman was in court on Thursday, June 5, 2025. 26-year-old Nour Al Thafiri is from Waukegan, Illinois. Prosecutors say this goes back to April when a Kenosha family reported their two-year-old came home with bruising that looked like finger marks. To find bruising on the boy's upper arm, shoulders and back. "The allegation is that my client grabbed this child too tightly and left some bruises," said defense attorney Carl Johnson. Prosecutors charged 26-year-old Nour Al Thafiri with child abuse. Investigators say the daycare told the child's parents his head got stuck under a cabinet while playing with a ball. Prosecutors say the injuries tell a different story. "Showed a video of the defendant knocking a stuffed animal away from the child victim. The defendant responded 'he don't want it anymore,'" said Kenosha County District Attorney Xavier Solis. Investigators say they looked at the daycare's video surveillance, showing Al Thafiri grabbing the boy by his arms multiple times and, at one point, putting a blanket over him, covering his head. Then, prosecutors say, the video shows her "examining the child's upper right arm and upper back." Ten minutes later, prosecutors say Al Thafiri rolled a ball under the cabinet, to play "fetch." Prosecutors believe that she quote "staged a ball-rolling incident to explain the injuries in a way that could avoid consequences." The defense says the 15-page complaint took him a couple of reads to figure out the alleged abuse. "This is not a case where there are allegations of punching or kicking a child, striking a child," added Johnson. Al Thafiri's bond was set at $10,000.
