IMD forecasts heavy rainfall with thunderstorms in Delhi on Sunday, lowering temperatures. AQI improves to 'satisfactory'. Orange alert issued for eight states.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall for the national capital on Sunday. Delhi is likely to witness thunderstorms and lightning along with rain during the afternoon hours.
This week, the national capital experienced mixed weather conditions, including heavy rainfall to humid weather.
The showers are expected to bring the maximum temperature down to 35–37 degrees Celsius, with the minimum likely to hover around 27–29 degrees Celsius.
The air quality of the national capital continues to show improvement on Sunday, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) slipping into the 'satisfactory' category after remaining 'poor' for several days.
According to the weather department, moderate to heavy rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30–40 km/h) is expected on Monday in Delhi. The maximum temperature is expected to be maximum 34 degree celsius whereas the minimum is predicted to be 27 degree celsius.
The IMD has also issued an orange alert for eight states, warning of intense rainfall activity. The alert covers Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, and Uttar Pradesh.
The weather department had previously forecasted 'heavy to very heavy rainfall" in Northwest India, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and the Konkan-Goa region on June 21, with the spell of wet weather expected to persist from June 21 to June 26.
'Conditions are favourable for further advance of monsoon into the remaining parts of North Arabian Sea, more areas of Rajasthan, West Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and some parts of Jammu & Kashmir–Gilgit-Baltistan–Muzaffarabad and Ladakh during the next two days," the IMD said.

Extremely heavy rainfall is also likely over Gujarat on June 22 and eastern Madhya Pradesh on June 23 and IMD has further reported that in the last 24 hours, extremely heavy rainfall occurred at isolated places in eastern Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, while heavy to very heavy rainfall was recorded in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar, parts of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and coastal regions including Karnataka and Andhra accompanied by squally or gusty winds were also reported, with wind speeds reaching up to 120 kmph in parts of Marathwada and 60 kmph in regions including Madhya Maharashtra, Konkan, and Gangetic West Bengal.(with inputs from agencies)Must Watch

The Southwest Monsoon arrived in the State on May 26, a week ahead of its June 4 arrival, but it has since been playing hide and seek as Andhra Pradesh did not record heavy rainfall between June 1 and 22. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), in its forecast for June, on May 27 had said that the State is likely to see an above-normal rainfall and added that the probabilities of the same were between 30.5% and 55%. As per information on the Andhra Pradesh State Development and Planning Society (APSDPS), there is a 37.5% deficit in rainfall in the State between June 1 and 21. As against the average normal of 76.6 mm rainfall, the State recorded 47.9 mm during this period. At the beginning of the second week, as of June 9, there was a deficit rainfall of 59% in the State. Except for five districts, including Eluru, Krishna, Kurnool, Anantapur, East Godavari, that reported 'normal' rainfall between June 1 and 21, the remaining 21 districts have reported 'deficit' rainfall. Four districts, including Alluri Sitarama Raju, Palnadu, YSR Kadapa, Annamayya, have reported 'large deficient' since the rainfall deficit in these districts is more than 60%. Palnadu has the largest deficit percentage of 67.7 as against the normal of 63.4 mm, the district received 20.5 mm rainfall in the first three weeks of June. According by the IMD forecast, for the people in the State there is not much to cheer as not much rain is in store for the State until June 26. Moreover, the weather may remain hot and humid, with daytime temperatures reaching 40°C or more. However, thunderstorms, accompanied with lightning and strong winds, may offer some relief in some pockets.

A 'yellow' alert has been issued for light to moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm and gusty winds at speeds of 30 to 40 kilometres per hour in Delhi, the weather department said. The national capital recorded a maximum temperature of 36.2 degrees Celsius, 1.3 notches below the seasonal average, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said. The minimum temperature settled at 28.4 degrees Celsius, while the relative humidity stood at 78 per cent at 5.30 pm. The city received 0.1 mm of light rainfall accompanied with wind on Saturday. According to the weather department, the maximum temperature is expected to hover around 34 degrees Celsius while the minimum is expected to settle at 27 degrees Celsius. Delhi's air quality was recorded in the "satisfactory" category at 4 pm on Sunday , with an Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 98, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data showed. According to the CPCB, an AQI between zero and 50 is considered 'good', 51 and 100 'satisfactory', 101 and 200 'moderate', 201 and 300 'poor', 301 and 400 'very poor', and 401 and 500 'severe'.
