Solidarity best in face of US tariff tensions

The United States' global tariff war has prompted China to strengthen economic ties with other leading trading partners.

Examples are the upgrading of the 15-year-old free-trade agreement (FTA) with the 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and this week's inaugural summit in Malaysia between China, Asean and the Gulf Cooperation Council.
China and Asean remained each other's top trading partner for the fifth consecutive year in 2024. After negotiations over two years, they have reached a consensus on an updated FTA, expected to come into effect as early as this year.
This is a timely signal of unity and cooperation that will do no harm to either side's bargaining power in negotiations with the United States, where Asean members may expect to come under pressure to choose sides between China and the US.
Southeast Asian nations were among the hardest hit by Washington's 'reciprocal tariffs', until the White House paused them. Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam faced duties of 49 per cent, 48 per cent and 46 per cent respectively.

In April, President Xi Jinping visited Vietnam, Malaysia and Cambodia, where he called on Asian nations to unite against unilateralism and protectionism. Beijing has continued efforts to strengthen global economic ties amid tensions with the US.

Several injured, set on fire in ‘targeted terror attack' at Boulder, Colorado mall

Several people were injured and some may have been set on fire at an outdoor mall in Boulder, Colorado, police said. Police said a man was taken into custody in the attack that the FBI described as a 'targeted' act of terror. 'We are aware of and fully investigating a targeted terror attack in Boulder, Colorado,' Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) chief Kash Patel said on social media. While stressing that the information was 'very preliminary', Boulder Police Chief Stephen Redfearn said the man was apprehended following calls to the police dispatch of someone with a weapon who was 'setting people on fire'. According to CBS News, which cited witnesses at the scene, a suspect attacked people with Molotov cocktails who were taking part in a walk to remember the Israeli hostages who remain in Gaza. Redfearn said he was not in a position to identify the suspect yet, noting that he had been taken to the hospital. He said there were multiple injuries among the victims, ranging 'from very serious to more minor'. 'Our agents and local law enforcement are on the scene already, and we will share updates as more information becomes available,' Patel posted on social media.

Shanghai's Gogogym eyes pet fitness revolution with canine treadmills

China is set to open its first pet gym, which will feature swimming pools, treadmills and fitness coaches. A pet fitness center in Shanghai, called Gogogym, gained popularity online after sharing a video of dogs running on treadmills. Gogogym was created by Heal Petcare, a pet healthcare brand based in Singapore. It is designed specifically for dog health. The facility features four key areas. These include a fitness zone, a spa and rehabilitation area, a massage room and pet retail space. The gym will open in late June and is currently testing operations. According to staff, the goal is to help pets stay active and prevent illness through regular exercise. Professional trainers will also be on-site to create personalised workout plans based on each dog's needs. A job posting from March revealed that the gym is hiring certified pet fitness coaches and therapists. The gym has a preference for candidates experienced in canine rehabilitation or veterinary care. On April 19, Gogogym launched a dog fitness model contest on social media. Staff mentioned that membership prices are still being finalised, but those who attend pre-opening events will get free gym passes.

Hong Kong police received over 440,000 leads on cyberattacks against city in 2024

Hong Kong police received more than 440,000 pieces of intelligence on cyberthreats targeting the city last year, while 5 per cent of publicly accessible technology assets owned by critical infrastructure operators were vulnerable to online attacks, a first-of-its kind review has found. In a report released on Monday, police said they assessed 90,000 pieces of technology assets, including digital resources such as IP addresses and online domains, and found 4,500 tested items had system loopholes. 'If these loopholes are not discovered and fixed, when cyberattacks happen, they will definitely affect important services in Hong Kong or even affect residents' usage,' Raymond Lam Cheuk-ho, chief superintendent of the cybersecurity and technology crime bureau, warned. Hong Kong passed a law in March mandating that an undisclosed list of private operators in eight sectors deemed as critical infrastructure for the normal functioning of society must conduct regular security checks on their computer systems. The industries were the energy, information technology, banking, communications, maritime and healthcare services, and land and air transport sectors. Under the law, firms can be fined up to HK$5 million (US$637,685) for failing to keep their systems up to date. Regulated firms must also notify authorities within 12 hours of a cybersecurity breach.
