Sorry, That's Not Wyatt Russell in the Viral L.A. Protest Video

Yahoo3 hours ago

As protests over U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids and arrests in Los Angeles led Donald Trump to deploy 2,000 National Guard troops to the city over the weekend — a decision that California Gov. Gavin Newsom said would trigger a lawsuit from the state — images from the ground have been intense. From torched Waymo robotaxis to mounted LAPD officers apparently spurring their horses to stomp an activist on the ground, it's clear that the city has become a testing ground for how far the Trump administration can push its migrant purge.
One video making the rounds, captured by TikTok user @only__loo, shows a man delivering an impassioned speech to National Guard forces stationed outside a Veterans Affairs building in Downtown L.A.

'You should be standing here with us!' he declares from a line of protesters and press. 'You're on the wrong side of history. We know you got a job to do. But you took an oath to the Constitution, not the fascists in the White House! Think about what you're doing now, think about what this means, coming into our community. Peaceful fucking community, people working their jobs. They send in men in military fatigues, weapons of war, into our community. And you stand here and you allow it. I'm sick and tired of it. You should be sick and tired of it.'
Bearded, long-haired, and sporting a hoodie from L.A.'s hockey team, the Kings, the man addressing the National Guard has not been conclusively identified, though as the clip made its way across social media, some speculated that it was Wyatt Russell, son of Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn, a former pro hockey player and actor who most recently starred in the Marvel movie Thunderbolts*. The claim got as far as the social channels of Occupy Democrats, an organization known for spreading misinformation to a liberal audience. 'Actor Kurt Russell's son Wyatt just scolded Trump's National Guard TO THEIR FACES in Los Angeles!' read their caption on a Monday post sharing the video to Threads.
But Russell's publicist confirms to Rolling Stone that the individual seen in the footage isn't him at all. 'This is indeed not Wyatt Russell, and we have been working to try and correct the mis-identification,' says Bryna Rifkin of Narrative PR. Furthermore, Russell's own Instagram account hasn't been updated in over a year, and he does not seem to maintain any other social media presence where he might have commented on ICE actions under Trump or the protests against them.
Of course, that hasn't stopped countless people online from either heaping praise on the actor or condemning him in connection with the TikTok of a demonstrator he vaguely resembles. It's not clear who originally made the erroneous claim that Russell had been the one to confront the armed troops stationed in L.A.
Trump on Monday continued to call for a military response to anti-ICE protests in the city while defending his call to mobilize the National Guard, a move that has broadly escalated tensions in the streets. 'If we had not done so, Los Angeles would have been completely obliterated,' he claimed in a post on Truth Social. He also on Monday endorsed the idea of having his border czar, Tom Homan, arrest Newsom. 'I think it's great,' Trump said. 'Gavin likes the publicity, but I think it would be a great thing. He's done a terrible job. Look, I like Gavin Newsom, he's a nice guy, but he's grossly incompetent.'
As for Russell, he may not have the time to join a march at the moment. He's slated to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, which is currently in production, and an untitled Steven Spielberg sci-fi film, both set for release in 2026. That would be enough to keep anyone busy for the foreseeable future.

House Homeland Security Chairman Mark Green to resign from Congress

Washington — House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mark Green, a Tennessee Republican, announced Monday that he plans to resign after Congress passes President Trump's budget bill. "Recently, I was offered an opportunity in the private sector that was too exciting to pass up. As a result, today I notified the Speaker and the House of Representatives that I will resign from Congress as soon as the House votes once again on the reconciliation package," Green said in a statement. His forthcoming resignation was first reported by Punchbowl News. As the chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, Green led an effort last year to impeach then-Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas over the Biden administration's handling of the U.S.-Mexico border. Green has served in Congress since 2019. He had planned to retire at the end of last year instead of seeking a fourth term, but quickly reversed course after Mr. Trump urged him to reconsider. "Though I planned to retire at the end of the previous Congress, I stayed to ensure that President Trump's border security measures and priorities make it through Congress," Green said. "By overseeing the border security portion of the reconciliation package, I have done that. After that, I will retire, and there will be a special election to replace me." Green's departure could further eat into House Republicans' narrow majority, depending on when he leaves and when a special election is held in his solidly red district. Republicans can currently afford to lose three votes, but there are three vacancies from Democrats who died this year. Special elections to replace them are scheduled for the fall. Congressional leaders have given themselves a self-imposed deadline of July 4 to send the reconciliation package to Mr. Trump. The House passed the bill before Memorial Day, and the Senate is expected to make changes to it in the coming weeks before sending it back to the lower chamber. contributed to this report.

DC prepares for Trump's military parade with 18 miles of fencing and 175 magnetometers

WASHINGTON (AP) — As the nation's capital cleans up from the culmination of World Pride this past weekend, focus now shifts to a very different massive event — Saturday's military parade to honor the 250th birthday of the Army and the 79th birthday of President Donald Trump. 'We're preparing for an enormous turnout,' said Matt McCool of the Secret Service's Washington Field office, who said more than 18 miles of 'anti-scale fencing' would be erected and 'multiple drones' would be in the air. The entire District of Columbia is normally a no-fly zone for drones. Army officials have estimated around 200,000 attendees for the evening military parade, and McCool said he was prepared for 'hundreds of thousands' of people. 'We have a ton of magnetometers,' he said. 'If a million people show up, then we're going to have some lines.' A total of 175 magnetometers would be used at security checkpoints controlling access to the daytime birthday festival and the nighttime parade. Metropolitan Police Department chief Pamela Smith predicted 'major impacts to traffic' and advised attendees to arrive early and consider forgoing cars for the Metro. 'This is a significant event with a large footprint,' she said. 'We're relying on the public to be an extra set of ears and eyes for us.' The military parade has been designated a National Special Security Event — similar to a presidential inauguration or state funeral. That status is reserved for events that draw large crowds and potential mass protests. It calls for an enhanced degree of high-level coordination among D.C. officials, the FBI, Capitol Police and Washington's National Guard contingent — with the Secret Service taking the lead. The Army birthday celebration had already been planned for months. But earlier this spring, Trump announced his intention to transform the event — which coincides with his 79th birthday — into a massive military parade complete with 60-ton M1 Abrams battle tanks and Paladin self-propelled howitzers rolling through the city streets. Multiple counter-protests of varying sizes are planned for Saturday, with the largest being a mass march to the White House dubbed the No Kings rally. Officials say they are also on alert for signs that the immigration-related clashes between law enforcement and protesters currently roiling Los Angeles would spread. 'We're paying attention, obviously, to what is happening there. We'll be ready,' McCool said. 'We have a robust plan for civil disobedience.' Agent Phillip Bates of the FBI's Washington Field office, which is tasked with counterterrorism and crisis management, said there were 'no credible threats' to the event at the moment. Lindsey Appiah, the deputy mayor for public safety, told The Associated Press last week that the city had longstanding plans for the Army birthday celebration. But those plans 'got a lot bigger on short notice' when Trump got involved. Still, Appiah said the city has grown 'very flexible, very nimble' at rolling with these sort of changes. ____ For more details, including road closures and security restrictions, go to: . Error! Amid LA protests, what officials say about the rules of force for National Guard, Marines

The Marines and the National Guard personnel deployed amid the protests in to Los Angeles will operate under the same rules of force and will not be engaging crowds, according to two U.S. officials. That means they are tasked with protecting federal buildings and federal personnel only -- they will not patrol U.S. streets or try to detain protesters to assist police, the officials said. While all the troops are carrying weapons, their guns will not have ammunition loaded in the chamber, officials said, but will carry ammunition as part of their regular uniforms that can be used in the rare case of needed self-defense. They will not use rubber bullets or pepper spray, either, they said. The officials noted these rules would change if President Donald Trump invokes the Insurrection Act, which he has not done. The rules of force the personnel are operating under call for them to de-escalate any incidents as much as possible. The Marines and Guard troops being sent to Los Angeles are being led by Army Maj. Gen. Scott Sherman, who is deputy commander of U.S. Army North, officials said. In total, there are 2,800 troops operating under Title 10 status: 2,100 of them National Guard soldiers and 700 active-duty Marines. Title 10 of the U.S. Code contains a provision that allows the president to call on federal service members when there "is a rebellion or danger of rebellion against the authority of the Government of the United States" or when "the President is unable with the regular forces to execute the laws of the United States." The deployment of the 700 Marines was to ensure "adequate numbers of forces to provide continuous coverage" of the area, according to U.S. Northern Command.
