Turner Prize nominee unveils Three Women mural at Brixton station
A mural by Turner prize nominee Claudette Johnson has been unveiled at Brixton Underground station.Three Women is the artist's first public work and follows a series of murals by other artists previously exhibited at the south London station as part of Transport for London's (TfL) Art on the Underground programme. The project has been running since 2018 and echoes local murals painted in the area in the 1980s.The mural, Johnson said, loosely references Picasso's 1907 painting, Les Demoiselles D'Avignon.
"I am fascinated by the power that emanates from these postures and this is borne from my longstanding interest in women, power and how we claim space in places where we have been absent, obscured, caricatured or denied," she added. The artist is best known using a range of media to create large-scale drawings of black women and her involvement as a founding member of the BLK Art Group.Three Women is a three-part artwork known as a triptych, that features subjects referenced in one of her previous works, Trilogy.
Eleanor Pinfield, Head of Art on the Underground hoped it would be "enjoyed by millions"."Claudette Johnson's new artwork honours the Black female experience through this bold triptych, continuing Art on the Underground's exploration of contemporary responses to muralism at Brixton station."Johnson combines a monolithic scale with an intimacy in our encounter with her subjects," Ms Pinfield added. Some of Johnson's work is currently included in The Turner Prize exhibition at Tate Britain, alongside fellow nominees Pio Abad, Jasleen Kaur and Delaine Le Bas. The prize will be awarded on 3 December 2024 at a ceremony at Tate Britain.Works by by Denzil Forrester, Joy Labinjo and Njideka Akunyili Crosby have previously been exhibited as part of the Art on the Underground project at Brixton station.

JANA HOCKING: My nights of lesbian exploration... and the lesson they've taught me that every middle-aged woman must know
Over the past few years, something curious has started happening in my friend group. Women, apparently straight, mostly divorced and fed up with dating men, have started confessing: 'I think I might be into other women.' At first, I dismissed it as a one-off, a throw-away comment delivered with a nervous laugh after one too many cocktails. But then another friend said it. Then another.

Judge threatens to remove Sean 'Diddy' Combs from trial
Judge Arun Subramanian has threatened to kick Sean 'Diddy' Combs from his courtroom after he 'vigorously nodded' at jurors. The 55-year-old music artist is facing charges of racketeering, sex trafficking and transportation to engage in prostitution – he has denied all allegations against him. The hearings kicked off last month in New York, with his ex-girlfriend, Cassie Ventura, and Kid Cudi among those who have taken the stand so far. As proceedings began earlier today, multiple outlets have reported that Diddy has been threatened with expulsion from the court for seemingly attempting to 'interact' with jurors. Speaking to Comb's attorney, the judge Subramanian said in court: 'Mr Agnifilo, your client was looking at jurors and nodding vigorously. 'This can't continue, or I will give a limiting instruction you won't like, or other measures, including barring your client from the courtroom. Do you understand?' Defence attorney Marc Agnifilo told the judge that it would not happen again. The judge then added: 'There should be no efforts whatsoever to have an interaction with this jury.' This comes just days after a screaming woman was removed from the trial after an explicit outburst. More Trending According to People Magazine, she could be heard screaming: 'These motherf**kers are laughing at you. 'You're laughing at a Black man's legacy.' Combs is thought to have remained seated during the incident, but turned around when Judge Subramanian ordered officers to remove the woman. Got a story? King visits London market after braving summer showers
The King was offered a 'special discount' on antique watches when he visited a London market after braving a summer downpour. Charles toured Old Spitalfields Market after visiting the nearby South by SouthWest London (SXSW London) festival, where he was welcomed by the Kingdom Choir, who performed at the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's wedding. The market on Thursdays features stalls selling vintage items, and Charles perused the silverware, old photos and arts and crafts from places like Indonesia and Persia. Shoppers were kept back but Charles shook hands with many of the stallholders, including Paul Brimmer, not part of the royal tour, who told the King: 'I've got a stall with watches, I'll give you a special discount,' then added: 'You don't carry cash.' Peter Filosidis's table was covered in knick-knacks and Charles asked him where he found the items. Mr Filosidis said afterwards: 'It was amazing to meet the King. It's the King for god's sake, it's the King.' He said he had seen him once or twice at the opera, which the antique hunter attended regularly. Earlier Charles walked from the main SXSW London site at the Truman Brewery in the rain, holding an umbrella, to the crypt of Christ Church, Spitalfields, the venue for the SXSW exhibition Beautiful Collisions, showcasing artists whose work draws on their Caribbean heritage. Denzil Forrester, one of five artists featured, discussed his painting of figures with the King and told him he found inspiration sketching in clubs till 5am. 'Are you sure? You should be in bed,' quipped the King. The six-day SXSW London is a culture, technology and creativity festival being held in Shoreditch, east London. It is the first time the event, which began in Austin, Texas, US, has been held in Europe. It showcases the future of the creative industries, supporting emerging artists and innovative projects, and features a number of discussions, exhibitions and networking events. Deputy prime minister Angela Rayner was among those who greeted the King when he arrived, after she had appeared earlier at the festival speaking about sustainable communities. Other speakers during the six-day festival have included former prime ministers Sir Tony Blair and Lord David Cameron, London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan and actor Idris Elba, speaking to delegates on a range of issues from AI to healthcare and creativity in communities. Charles also toured the immersive art installation Grounding, where artist Damien Roach has used AI and data to create modern landscape images of mountains, woodland scenes or the sun's corona during a total eclipse.
