New Zealand software company expands US presence after $42 million funding boost

Fast growing Auckland-based software company Tracksuit has raised $42 million from private investors to expand its presence in the United States and drive international growth in Asia and Europe.
The four-year-old company has developed survey software for smaller companies which is used to track the prominence and penetration of commercial brands.
"Historically, brand tracking has been expensive, outdated, and inaccessible," Connor Archbold, co-founder and chief executive said.
"We built Tracksuit to change that, giving teams a simple, affordable, and always-on way to measure brand performance."
The new funding was led by San Francisco-based investment firm VMG Partners, with existing investors including Blackbird and Icehouse Ventures also contributing.
Tracksuit has 1000 customers across New Zealand, Australia, the US and parts of Europe, with its software tracking about 10,000 brands - which it wants to double to 20,000 by year's end.
Although aimed at small and medium businesses its clients now include large firms including Zuru, Goodman Fielder, Disney, and KiwiSaver provider Simplicity.
Archbold said the involvement of VMG was significant for its future growth.
"With VMG we gain a partner who truly understands scaling consumer brands, and their support will be key as we accelerate growth."
Tracksuit has 150 staff in New York, London, Sydney and Auckland and plans to hire at least 50 more in the coming year.

Expanding investment in voluntary nature credits

The market's aim is open income opportunities for farmers and other landowners who have projects on their land, by linking them with investors interested in projects designed to protect nature. The Associate Minister for the Environment, and Agriculture, Andrew Hoggard, says the credits will appeal to international and domestic investors - including corporates, banks, and philanthropists who are seeking high-quality nature credits that meet global standards. Some privately funded pilot projects are already underway to test how a voluntary nature credit markets can work in the New Zealand context. Forest and Bird has cautiously welcomed the announcement, of what's planned to be a high integrity model, but expressed reservations that it could become a vehicle for offsetting environmental harm. New facility to recycle construction waste near Huntly
A new facility near Huntly will process more than 60 tonnes of construction waste per hour, aiming to divert over 100,000 tonnes of construction waste from landfill. Building researchers BRANZ say typically 40 to 50 per cent of all construction waste goes to landfill. The $16 million Green Gorilla facility in Rotowaro opened this week. The project was co-funded by a $4 million grant from the Ministry for the Environment's Waste Minimisation Fund. US dollar dives on Trump's new trade threat

Photo: ANNA MONEYMAKER The US dollar has plunged after US President Donald Trump threatened higher unilateral tariffs on trade partners, and oil see-sawed as traders evaluated the probability behind reports that Israel could be gearing up to strike Iran. Stocks traded mixed on Friday (NZT) as investors navigated the double whammy of returning trade uncertainty and geopolitical volatility, while Boeing's share price slumped sharply in the wake of a deadly 787 Dreamliner crash in India. In New York, investors cheered benign US producer price data and a successful US Treasury auction that sent yields lower. But markets were leery after Trump on Wednesday said he would be sending letters within the next two weeks to other countries' governments to announce unilateral US levies on their exports to America. "This is the deal, you can take it or leave it," Trump told reporters. Investor unease about Trump's trade rhetoric is "causing a little bit of selling," said Jack Ablin of Cresset Capital Management. In the end, the S&P 500 finished up 0.4 percent after a see-saw session. All European stock markets finished lower, except London, which posted an uptick despite official data showing the UK economy shrank more than expected in April. The dollar was down against the euro, and at one point fell by more than one percent to its lowest point in three years against the European single currency. "Trump has done it again. The US president has rattled markets with fresh threats of unilateral tariff rates on several trading partners," said Fawad Razaqzada, market analyst at Markets were also following reports that Israel was poised to launch airstrikes on Iran. Trump called Thursday on Israel not to attack Iran, saying a deal on its nuclear program remained close. But Iran has ramped up rhetorical pressure before upcoming talks, including with a threat to strike American bases in the region if the negotiations break down and conflict erupts. Oil prices, which had initially jumped on Wednesday on the heightened tensions, flipped direction for much Thursday, finishing modestly lower. Back in New York, Boeing dropped nearly five percent after a London-bound Air India plane -- a Boeing 787 -- crashed in Ahmedabad with 242 people aboard. The US planemaker declared itself ready to support Air India following the crash, the first involving a 787 Dreamliner. - AFP
