Sabahans want local parties to lead state government, says Hajiji
KOTA KINABALU: The people of Sabah want local parties to lead the state government, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
"That is why I want Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) to lead in the upcoming 17th Sabah election. I feel the pulse of the people.
"Their aspiration is for the state government to be led by a local party.
"We must not think otherwise. We must continue to support the current government, whose achievements are already evident," he said in his speech during the "Programme with the Chief Minister: Building Kunak's Future" at Padang Pekan Kunak here.
At present, the eight-party GRS coalition holds 38 seats in the state assembly, followed by Parti Warisan with 14, Umno with 11, and Pakatan Harapan with seven.
"We have implemented many initiatives across Sabah that will benefit the state's future, not just in terms of development, but also in boosting our overall economy.
"I am proud that we have a strong team in the government and that the people have given us solid support.
"We must learn from Sabah's political history. If we keep fighting, we will remain divided," he said.
Hajiji said the state government's achievements under his leadership are unprecedented, citing the Commercial Cooperation Agreement (CCA) with Petronas as an example, which has brought many benefits to Sabah.
Under the agreement, Sabah secured a 20 per cent stake in the Samarang Production Sharing Contract (PSC) and the Sabah Ammonia Urea (SAMUR) project in Sipitang.
"There is much we have already gained, and several matters are still being negotiated with Petronas," he said.
At the event, Hajiji also announced the handing over of land under the Sabah Housing and Town Development Authority (LPPB) to be gazetted as village reserve land for Kampung Kunak Jaya, Bagian, and Selamat.
He also announced a RM1.2 million state allocation to build jetty facilities in Kampung Pangkalan.

At times, stability trumps wanting to always win, says Sabah Umno No 2
Sabah Umno deputy chief Abdul Rahman Dahlan, who is said to be keen on rebuilding ties with GRS, has clashed with state Umno chairman Bung Moktar Radin several times now. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Sabah Umno deputy chief Abdul Rahman Dahlan has made a cryptic post on 'stability' and 'wanting to always be the victor' amid speculation over the party's alliances for the upcoming Sabah election. 'There are times when stability is far more important than wanting to be seen as the victor in every clash. Choose the right approach to confrontations,' the former Kota Belud MP said in a Facebook post. Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) have announced a pact for the state election, while talks were said to be ongoing to rope Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) into the alliance. However, last week, Sabah Umno chief Bung Moktar Radin said the state chapter will not work with GRS for the polls. He added that any possible cooperation will only be considered after the outcome of the state election. GRS chairman Hajiji Noor, who is also Sabah chief minister, said the ruling state coalition has yet to decide on its alliances for the election. Last month, Hajiji said the existing alliance between GRS and PH, both of which form the state government, should be continued in the state election. Bung and his Sabah Umno deputy have clashed several times in the past few years, with Rahman said to be keen on rebuilding ties between his party and GRS. While Sabah Umno and GRS used to be allies in the state government, Bung led his party in retracting support for Hajiji as chief minister in January 2023. Sabah PH then gave Hajiji its backing to allow him to stay on as chief minister.

Gagasan Rakyat Api-Api urges sacrifice, sets sights on historic win
Published on: Monday, June 09, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 09, 2025 By: Jonathan Nicholas Text Size: Gagasan Rakyat Api-Api Chief Datuk Faisyal Yusof Hamdain (left) presents a memento to Secretary-General Datuk Razali Razi after officiating the division's 2025 annual meeting. KOTA KINABALU: Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (PGRS) Api-Api Division Chief Datuk Faisyal Yusof Hamdain has called on party members to view time and financial sacrifices as necessary investments for long-term political success. Speaking to some 200 delegates at the division's annual meeting here on Sunday, Faisyal said while current sentiment favors local parties, collaboration with the federal government remains crucial. Advertisement He acknowledged the contributions of former national parties but emphasized that Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) represents the present and future of Sabah politics. Faisyal pledged Gagasan Rakyat's support for any GRS or Pakatan Harapan candidate in upcoming elections and urged the youth wing to focus on mobilizing young voters, who make up half of Sabah's electorate. He noted that with Api-Api's voter composition—48pc Bumiputera and 40pc Chinese—there is a real opportunity for GRS to make inroads in a seat long held by Chinese representatives. 'A GRS victory here is possible within five to ten years,' he said, citing the coalition's broad appeal under its multiracial platform. Advertisement To boost voter outreach, a series of programs are being planned. Youth chief Safwan Faisyal Diego announced a townhall session with business and community leaders, in collaboration with former mayor Datuk Yeo Boon Hai, and a soup kitchen initiative with Jetsin Sdn Bhd's Datuk Jade Koh. Safwan said Api-Api's ethnic mix including Chinese, Dusun, Malay, and Tausug members reflects GRS's inclusivity. 'That's the beauty of GRS and Gagasan Rakyat. As long as you're a Sabahan, you'll always have a place with us,' he added. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Call to reflect MA63 equal status: Petronas, Mara scholarships
Published on: Monday, June 09, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 09, 2025 By: Sohan Das Text Size: Elias said in the case of Mara, a recent viral video indicated bumiputra students offered to study abroad for courses costing up to RM1 million or more reportedly comprising mainly peninsula students, although Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan natives are also bumiputras. LABUAN: There is concern that the cutback on expenditure by Petronas which will see up to 5,000 or 10 per cent of its workforce being laid off may also impact its commitment towards education, particularly the awarding of scholarships. Bumiputra rights activist George Elias said even before this new development, Petronas had never been transparent to the people of Labuan, Sarawak and Sabah on whether the Borneo territories were getting their fair share of scholarships. Advertisement 'There was no breakdown on how much went towards scholarships. 'We do not know whether the scholarships even reflected the one-third equal composition under amendments to the Federal Constitution in 2022 that restored the status of Sabah and Sarawak to that of equal partnership in the federation as per the Malaysia Agreement (MA63).
