Music industry icon Sean "Diddy" Combs has officially declined a plea deal offered by federal prosecutors, setting the stage for a high-profile criminal trial next week. The 55-year-old Combs appeared in Manhattan federal court on Thursday, where Judge Arun Subramanian confirmed with him that he had reviewed and rejected the deal. "Yes, I did," Combs replied when questioned by the judge. He appeared in court wearing a tan jail uniform.advertisementAccording to Reuters, Combs is confronting five serious federal charges, including sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy. If convicted on all counts, he could face a life sentence. He has maintained his innocence and entered a not-guilty plea earlier in the proceedings.
At the hearing, Assistant US Attorney Maurene Comey stated that Combs had been warned of the potential for a harsher sentence if found guilty at trial than if he had accepted the government's plea offer. Details of the offer, however, were not disclosed in court.Prosecutors allege that Combs exploited his entertainment business to orchestrate a disturbing scheme spanning over 20 years. He allegedly pressured women into drug-fueled sex acts involving male sex workers, in events referred to as 'Freak Offs.'His legal team contends that the sexual encounters were consensual, describing them as part of a private swinger lifestyle involving Combs and his romantic partners.advertisementJury Selection and Trial TimelineProspective jurors in New York began screening this week through questionnaires to determine any pre-existing bias due to widespread media attention. Selected candidates will return for in-person questioning starting May 5. Opening statements are expected to occur on May 12, with the trial projected to last approximately two months.Once celebrated for transforming hip-hop and launching the careers of artists like Notorious B.I.G. and Mary J. Blige, Combs' image has sharply declined.Since 2023, he has been named in multiple civil suits alleging sexual misconduct. His criminal indictment was handed down in September 2024. Combs continues to deny all allegations.(With inputs from Reuters)Also Read: Who is David Corenswet? Meet the actor playing the new SupermanMust Watch

Trump admin investigates Biden pardons for family and inmates

In a sharp political move, US President Donald Trump's Justice Department is investigating pardons issued by former President Joe Biden, including those granted to family members and death row to an internal email seen by Reuters, Ed Martin, the department's pardon attorney, told staff he had been 'directed to investigate' whether Biden was 'competent and whether others were taking advantage of him through use of AutoPen or other means.'advertisementAn AutoPen, for the uninitiated, is a mechanical device that can mimic a person's signature — a tool Biden reportedly used in office, much to the skepticism of Trump and his allies who've long argued it delegitimizes presidential decisions. While there's no evidence Biden used an AutoPen for the pardons, Martin's probe is centered on two main categories:Preemptive pardons Biden issued to five family for 37 federal inmates, who were spared the death penalty in favor of life days before he left office on Jan. 20, Biden pardoned his siblings—James Biden, Frank Biden, and Valerie Biden Owens—as well as their spouses. It comes as Biden's health and mental acuity are increasingly questioned following a cancer diagnosis and revelations in a new book about internal Democratic concerns during his final year in 82-year-old Biden dropped his 2024 reelection bid after a poor debate performance raised fresh doubts about his stamina and decision-making. Diddy trial: 3 new celebrity names come up as ex-assistant Mia makes damning revelations

Three new celebrity names have come up during Sean 'Diddy' Combs' federal sex-trafficking and racketeering trial. The names came up during the testimony of Diddy's ex-assistant Mia, who worked for the rapper from 2009 to 2017. Mia's text messages about A-listers were shown to jurors. Mia, who testified anonymously under the pseudonym, texted the Bad Boy Records founder on March 8, 2019, asking him to watch the Netflix show 'Love' by director Judd Apatow, the New York Post reported. In another text Mia sent Diddy on May 14, 2020, she spoke about the death of record executive and media mogul Andre Harrell, the man who is often credited with discovering the 'I'll Be Missing You' rapper. 'Puff my heart is broken about Dre. I've spent all week crying for you as well," Mia texted Diddy. Mia later also texted Diddy about actor Chad Boseman's death. Diddy replied, "How are you? Yeah, life is crazy." Mia shared various other details about Diddy during the trial. At one point, she said that Diddy placed a tracking device on his on-and-off girlfriend Cassie Ventura's car. "He's stolen my phone many times, he's stolen Cassie's phone many times," Mia told the jury. "He's put tracking devices on her car. I'm not sure what he's capable of. I was terrified.' Mia told the jury that Diddy allegedly sexually assaulted her multiple times. Diddy's defense attorney Brian Steel pressed Mia about why she did not accuse the rapper of sexual assault during settlement talks in 2017 for unpaid wages. Mia claimed that she originally asked for $10 million for bonuses, severance and overtime that Diddy allegedly owed her, and never paid. However, she settled during mediation for $400,000 – an amount that was split with her attorneys in 2017. Mia further claimed that she did not know that sexual assault could be used in settlement negotiations, adding that it was in 2024 that she discussed the sex assault claims with prosecutors for the first time.
