Sarwar speaks of ‘guilt' of children having to experience attacks against him

'I think what gives me a bit more perspective is there were similar kinds of attacks, not identical, but similar kinds of attacks when I was growing up and my father was trying to be a politician, when he was trying to get elected as the country's first Muslim MP, and there was threats, there was abuse, there was violence at that time.

Million-plus pilgrims to begin hajj under blazing sun

Million-plus pilgrims to begin hajj under blazing sun Muslim worshippers walk at the Grand Mosque complex in the holy city of Mecca, ahead of the annual Hajj pilgrimage. (AFP) More than a million worshippers were set to join Islam's most important rite under a beating sun as the hajj pilgrimage kicked off on Wednesday, with authorities scrambling to avoid last year's 1,000-plus deaths in sweltering heat. In temperatures that are expected to climb to more than 40 degrees Celsius, robed pilgrims will slowly circle the Kaaba, Islam's holiest site, the black cubic structure at the centre of Mecca's Grand Mosque. About 1.4 million pilgrims arrived in Saudi Arabia ahead of the multi-day hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam that must be performed at least once by all Muslims with the means. Authorities have ratcheted up anti-heat measures such as extra shade to avoid a repeat of last year, when 1,301 people died as temperatures hit 51.8C. On Wednesday, pilgrims will perform the tawaf, walking seven times around the Kaaba, which Muslims worldwide pray towards each day. They then head to Mina, the site of a giant tented city, before the hajj's high-point: prayers on Mount Arafat, where the Prophet Mohammed is believed to have delivered his final sermon. Before entering Mecca, pilgrims must first enter a state of purity, called ihram, which requires special dress and behaviour. Men don a seamless shroud-like white garment that emphasises unity among believers, regardless of their social status or nationality. Women, in turn, wear loose dresses, also white, exposing just their faces and hands. Pilgrims arriving on buses were already trickling into Mina on Tuesday afternoon, greeted by staff offering them coffee and dates. "I am so happy, it's such an amazing feeling," said Reem al-Shogre, a 35-year-old Saudi national performing hajj for the first time. Hajj permits are allocated to countries on a quota basis and distributed to individuals by lottery. (AFP)

Foreign man caught with 56-year-old sex worker in mid-day raid

MUAR: A 33-year-old foreign man was caught red-handed with a 56-year-old sex worker during a mid-day raid by the Johor Islamic Religious Department (JAINJ) at a budget lodging house here yesterday. The man, who allegedly paid RM40 for a 30-minute session, was detained during the 12.50pm raid at one of four old premises flagged by the authorities for operating as venues for paid sex. In a statement, JAINJ said the woman was among more than 10 ageing non-Muslim prostitutes found waiting for customers during the sting operation in the heart of Muar. "Several male Muslim clients managed to flee the scene after being tipped off by a caretaker," the department said. The premises, believed to have been operating for years, were said to be frequented by foreign men living apart from their families. The detained suspect is expected to be charged at the Muar Syariah Court under Section 27 of the Johor Syariah Criminal Offences Enactment for engaging in immoral acts. The non-Muslim woman was released. "JAINJ has conducted numerous such operations in the past, leading to the arrest and prosecution of both local and foreign offenders," the department added.

Cop asks gym to bar entry of Muslims, shunted out

Bhopal: A police sub-inspector has been removed from field duty after he allegedly asked a gym owner not to allow entry to Muslims at the facility in Bhopal, officials said on Tuesday. The action against sub-inspector Dinesh Sharma was taken after a video surfaced on social media showing him purportedly making the controversial comments. 'No Muslim will come here to train or take training. I am telling you this clearly,' the cop was seen instructing the gym owner in the clip. According to the police, some Bajrang Dal members had visited the gym, located in the Ayodhya Nagar area of Bhopal, and raised questions over the presence of Muslim trainers at the facility. After this, the police were called to defuse the tension there. Sharma allegedly made the comments at that time, an official said. After a video of his comments went viral on social media, the police started an investigation into the matter.
