10 key social deficits hindering national unity, says minister
National unity minister Aaron Ago Dagang said investing in social cohesion is an investment in Malaysia's future resilience and prosperity.
PETALING JAYA : National unity minister Aaron Ago Dagang has identified 10 key social deficits undermining social cohesion in Malaysia, warning that a failure to address them could fuel distrust, alienation, and conflict.
The 10 include persistent ethnic divisions, religious tensions, social class disparities, fragmented education systems, insufficient emphasis on the national language, generational gaps, gender inequalities, as well as the politicisation of identity and federalism.
The remaining key social deficits are urban-rural divides, and the influence of traditional and digital media in spreading misinformation.
'By naming these deficits clearly, we commit ourselves to confronting them head-on together, so that Malaysia's diversity becomes our greatest source of strength, not division,' he said.
The minister was speaking at the launch of youth-led NGO Architects of Diversity's report, 'Building a United Malaysia: Investing in Social Cohesion', which he described as insightful, 'bold, rigorous, and necessary'.
Aaron said the 10 social deficits did not exist in isolation but intertwined and compounded one another, creating barriers to trust, mutual understanding, and a shared sense of belonging.
'Recognising these social deficits is essential because only through honest appraisal can we develop focussed, inclusive policies that heal these divides and strengthen the very foundation of our unity.'
He said the question the government must seriously consider is whether its policies are 'truly inclusive'.
'Are we empowering the next generation to build bridges, or to inherit walls? Are we investing in social cohesion with the same urgency and intensity as we invest in infrastructure, economy, and defence?'
Aaron added that investing in social cohesion was an investment in Malaysia's future resilience and prosperity.
'Unity is not the job of one ministry. It is the responsibility of an entire government, and the duty of every Malaysian. If we treat it as a slogan, we will fail. But if we treat it as a shared mission anchored in policy, supported by evidence, and powered by civic partnership, then we can succeed.'
The minister also said he would ensure that the report's key recommendations are tabled before the review committee of the National Unity Policy in the coming weeks.

Malaysia condemns Israeli strike on Iran, PM Anwar calls attack ‘reckless' and warns of threat to global peace
KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has condemned Israel's military strike on Iran, which reportedly killed a senior Iranian leader. Anwar said Malaysia called on Israel's allies, especially those with influence and the power to exert pressure, to use all available means to halt further acts of aggression, according to a report in Berita Harian today. He stressed that the international community must not allow actions that sabotage diplomatic efforts and threaten global peace to continue unchecked. 'This attack is a reckless and serious act that further endangers the stability of an already fragile region. 'The intention is clear — to derail the ongoing negotiations between the United States and Iran,' he said in a social media post today. Anwar added that the attack came at a time when Israel's actions in Gaza are facing increasing scrutiny and political pressure is mounting on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Earlier, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned that Israel would face severe consequences following the deadly attack on the Islamic republic earlier this morning. Iran's military also vowed a strong response to the Israeli strike, with its air defence forces placed on full alert following the early Friday morning assault. According to Iranian state TV, military spokesperson Brigadier General Abolfazl Shekarchi said both Israel and the United States would 'pay a heavy price' for the attack. I condemn, in the strongest possible terms, the Israeli military strikes in Iran, including targeted attacks that have killed senior Iranian is a grave and reckless act, one that threatens to further destabilise a fragile region. Its clear aim is to sabotage the... — Anwar Ibrahim (@anwaribrahim) June 13, 2025

Lawyer wants apex court ruling on validity of Naimah's asset declaration charge
Naimah Khalid, the wife of the late Daim Zainuddin, claimed trial in the sessions court last year to failing to comply with the terms of an asset declaration notice issued by MACC. (Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : Naimah Khalid's lawyer argued in the High Court today that the validity of the provision under which she was charged must be decided by the apex court. Naimah, the wife of the late Daim Zainuddin, claimed trial in the sessions court last year to a charge of failing to comply with the terms of an asset declaration notice issued by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). Naimah was accused, under Section 36(2) of the MACC Act 2009, of failing to declare her ownership of companies, several plots of land here and in Penang, as well as two vehicles. She subsequently filed a reference application, claiming that Section 30(5) of the MACC Act violated her right against self-incrimination, her right not to provide evidence that could be used against her in future proceedings, and her right to a fair trial. Section 30(5) provides that all persons to whom a notice is issued shall be legally bound to state the truth and disclose all information within their knowledge, or available to or capable of being obtained by them. The sessions court dismissed her application earlier this year. Naimah's lawyer Gurdial Singh Nijar today maintained that it was unconstitutional for Naimah to stand trial, saying the charge infringed her fundamental rights. He added that the High Court should refer the matter to the Federal Court for judicial determination. Deputy public prosecutor Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin told the court that the MACC Act made it mandatory for anyone summoned by the anti-graft agency to provide statements to answer questions from the investigating officers. The hearing continues before Justice K Muniandy on July 11.

Don't speculate on Yusoff Rawther's case, says AGC
The Attorney-General's Chambers said it will review the court's decision on Yusoff Rawther before deciding on the next steps. PETALING JAYA : The Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) has urged the public to refrain from making speculative or defamatory statements following the High Court's decision to acquit former research assistant Yusoff Rawther of drug trafficking and weapons-related charges. The AGC said it respected the court's decision and acknowledged the reasons given by the judge, but stressed that the case had garnered public attention. 'The AGC urges the public to refrain from making speculative or defamatory statements about the case's outcome, especially those made outside the scope of the court's stated reasons. 'The administration of justice must not be compromised by trial by media, public insinuations, social status, or perception,' it said in a statement today. Yusoff, who was held in remand for nine months, was acquitted of drug trafficking and the possession of two fake pistols yesterday. His defence was that the drugs and pistols were planted to frame him. The AGC said the prosecution was based on a thorough review of evidence and in accordance with legal principles, free from any external influence. 'Throughout the proceedings, the AGC acted within the bounds of prosecutorial independence and legal processes,' it said. The AGC added that it was studying the judgment in detail and would consider all available options before deciding on further action. 'The AGC remains committed to upholding the rule of law and will continue to discharge its responsibilities under the constitution with integrity, fairness, and respect for the judicial process,' it said.
