New Brunswick man faces more than 20 charges in Nova Scotia in theft of police car

A Moncton man is facing a long list of criminal charges after allegedly stealing an RCMP car in New Brunswick and driving it across the border into Nova Scotia.
Nova Scotia RCMP say they've charged Kyle Douglas Smith, 37, with more than 20 offences including possession of firearms, theft of a motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime, impaired operation, dangerous operation and mischief.
He's facing additional charges in New Brunswick.
According to Nova Scotia RCMP, Smith was arrested on the afternoon of May 16 just outside Amherst, N.S., less than 20 minutes after New Brunswick RCMP alerted local police that he was entering the province.
Police say Smith stole the vehicle in Sackville, N.B., before heading toward Nova Scotia.
Police say they tracked the vehicle through the car's GPS and stopped it by using a spike belt.
A stretch of Highway 104 was closed for six hours. RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Guillaume Tremblay said the closure was necessary for police to search the area on foot for evidence.
"You want to make sure that nobody in the vehicle would have thrown something out the window, for example," Tremblay said.
He could not say whether any evidence was gathered in that process.
Separate investigations
Tremblay said he did not have information about the theft of the vehicle since it happened in New Brunswick, except that it happened when an officer responded to a report of an "unwanted person" at a hotel.
The two RCMP jurisdictions have separate investigations, Tremblay said, with each one looking at events that happened on their own side of the border.
New Brunswick RCMP have not yet responded to CBC's request for information.
Smith remains in custody and is scheduled to appear again in court next month.
