BURNABY — Montreal Roses FC jumped out to a 2-0 edge 14 minutes into the contest and never looked back en route to defeating Vancouver Rise FC 3-1 on Sunday in Northern Super League action.

Quinn replied for Vancouver (1-1-0), which suffered its first loss of the season. It was Vancouver's first game at Swangard Stadium after opening the season at B.C. Place Stadium in a 1-0 win over Calgary Wild FC on April 16 in the league's inaugural game.

Ottawa Senators will likely show interest in Brock Boeser in search for scoring help
The weather has heated up in Ottawa and the expectation is that the phone lines at the Canadian Tire Centre will as well. Steve Staios, the Senators president of hockey operations and general manager, will be huddled with his closest advisors in the bowels of the rink as the first round of the virtual National Hockey League draft is set for Friday night and Rounds 2 through 7 are scheduled to begin Saturday at noon. The Senators ranked No. 18 in the league in goals last season with 243. Just 140 of those came at 5-on-5, which ranked Ottawa at No. 30 in the league. If the Senators want to address that need without giving up assets, the most realistic scenario is to scour the market on July 1 at noon. That would require them to overpay and, with only $10.75 million US in cap space, the club doesn't have a lot of wiggle room — or Staios will have to move some money off the roster. A player the Senators will show interest in is Vancouver Canucks winger Brock Boeser. He is ready to test the market after nine years with the Canucks. A proven goal scorer, he had 25 goals and 50 points in 75 games with Vancouver last season. Boeser, 28, who scored 40 goals and 73 points in 2023-24, would be an attractive option for the Senators because he can play on the right side of captain Brady Tkachuk and centre Tim Stutzle. Boeser's cousin, Dan, is well-respected amateur scout on Ottawa's staff. The family ties aside, there will be heavy competition for Boeser and the Senators may not want to get themselves into a long-term contract situation. Teams like the Boston Bruins, Minnesota Wild, Los Angeles Kings, Chicago Blackhawks, Buffalo Sabres and Chicago Blackhawks will make a heavy push. Boeser made $6.05 million in the final season of his deal last year. The expectation is that a new contract on the open market will pay him around $8 million per year. Coach Travis Green likely would back a move to sign Boeser. They spent nearly five seasons together in Vancouver and he was an effective player under Green. The Senators have been linked to speculation regarding Toronto Maple Leafs winger Mitch Marner, but they'd have to pull off some magic to make signing him a reality. The belief in league circles is that the Vegas Golden Knights will be the frontrunner for Marner. There has been speculation that Marner might want to take a short-term deal to see where the cap goes two or three years down the road. There has been talk that the Buffalo Sabres are looking to move winger JJ Peterka. The 23-year-old had 27 goals and 68 points last season, and Staios made a deal with Buffalo general manager Kevyn Adams at the trade deadline in March for centre Dylan Cozens. But the landscape in Buffalo has changed with respected league executive Jarmo Kekalainen hired to be a senior advisor to Adams. A league executive told Postmedia on Monday that he doubts that Peterka, a restricted free agent, will be moved anytime soon. Ottawa likely has kicked the tires on Peterka, however it doesn't sound like there is anything imminent on that front. The Anaheim Ducks traded forward Trevor Zegras to the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday to kick off the draft week. The Ducks received Ryan Poehling along with draft picks in return. He has one year left at $5.75 million and has struggled to stay healthy the last two seasons. He has 67 goals and 186 points in 268 NHL games and, given the fact that Rob DiMaio, Ottawa's director of player personnel, is a former Anaheim assistant GM, the Senators likely would have shown interest. The Montreal Canadiens were also linked to Zegras. Given the uncertainty surrounding the health of defenceman Nick Jensen, the club has also been studying the league for options for a right-shot blueliner. Jensen had hip surgery and won't be ready to start the season. The Senators were one of several teams that kicked the tires during the season with the Calgary Flames on defenceman Rasmus Andersson and his future is to be determined. Andersson, 28, a right-shot blueliner, is heading into the final year of a contract that will pay him $4.55 million next season. The expectation is he'll get somewhere in the $8-million range (or more) on his next deal, which is why the Flames are expected to move him this summer so they can get something in return. If the Senators were to make that move, Andersson would have to be signed to an extension, which means the return would be high. bgarrioch@

PWHL Vancouver names Brian Idalski as 1st-ever coach
PWHL Vancouver named Brian Idalski as the expansion club's first head coach on Monday. Idalski, 54, spent the past three seasons as head coach of the St. Cloud State women's hockey program. "Brian is a proven winner who knows our sport, the players, and has coached at the highest levels," general manager Cara Gardner Morey said. "What stands out in Brian's experience is his ability to build and transform the programs he is a part of, from his work in professional leagues, at the Olympics, and turning collegiate teams into nationally ranked contenders. I'm excited that he will lead our incredible group in Vancouver and can't wait to see his vision and influence shape our foundation." He previously led the collegiate programs at Wisconsin-Stevens Point (2001-06) and North Dakota (2007-17) before serving as head coach of the Chinese professional team Shenzhen KRS Vanke Rays from 2019-22. Idalski also coached the Chinese women's national team at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. "I feel very fortunate to have this opportunity to join an organization and city like Vancouver and want to thank Cara and the league for their trust and belief in me," Idalski said. "The PWHL has had a huge impact on the global game, and to be a part of that — with expansion helping push it even further forward — is an unbelievable feeling."
