
Rogers gets all necessary league approvals to buy Bell's MLSE stake
TORONTO - Rogers Communications has received all necessary league approvals to buy out rival Bell's 37.5 per cent stake in Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, the telecommunications company said Wednesday.
Rogers announced Sept. 18 that it was buying Bell's stake in Toronto-based MLSE, which includes the NHL's Maple Leafs, NBA's Raptors, CFL's Argonauts, Major League Soccer's Toronto FC and the American Hockey League's Marlies, for $4.7 billion.

Maple Leafs hire former Red Wings head coach Derek Lalonde as assistant
The Toronto Maple Leafs have hired former Detroit Red Wings head coach Derek Lalonde as an assistant on Craig Berube's staff, the NHL team announced Friday. The 52-year-old from Brasher Falls, N.Y., had a 89-86-23 record leading the Red Wings bench from the start of the 2022-23 season until he was fired midway through the 2024-25 campaign. He previously spent four seasons with the Tampa Bay Lightning as an assistant coach, winning back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2020 and 2021. Lalonde was an assistant coach with the United States at the 2023 and 2024 world championships. Before joining the NHL, he held head-coaching roles with the American Hockey League's Iowa Wild, the ECHL's Toledo Walleye and the United States Hockey League's Green Bay Gamblers. Mike Van Ryn and Marc Savard are Toronto's other assistants. Associate coach Lane Lambert left the Maple Leafs a week ago to take over as Seattle's head coach.

Canadian, U.S. markets finish week with big gains as investors take in jobs reports

The S&P/TSX composite index was up 86.84 points at 26,429.13. In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 443.13 points at 42,762.87. The S&P 500 index was up 61.06 points at 6,000.36, while the Nasdaq composite was up 231.50 points at 19,529.95. The Canadian dollar traded for 73.05 cents US compared with 73.21 cents US on Thursday. The July crude contract was up US$1.21 to $64.58 a barrel and the July natural gas contract was up 10 cents US at US$3.78 per mmBTU. The August gold contract was down US$28.50 at US$3,346.60 an ounce and the July copper contract was down nine cents US at US$4.85 a pound. LUNENBURG - Frozen seafood company High Liner Foods Inc. has signed a deal to buy the Mrs. Paul's and Van de Kamp's brands of frozen breaded and battered fish from Conagra Brands for US$55 million in cash. High Liner Foods currently co-manufactures products for Mrs. Paul's and Van de Kamp's brands at its U.S-based operations.
