Pakistan's steel maker activates 6.4MW solar plant at Karachi plant

International Steels Limited (ISL), a subsidiary of International Industries Limited, has completed and activated a 6.4-megawatt (MW) solar power project at its factory in Karachi.
The listed steel maker shared the development in a notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Friday.
'We are pleased to inform you that the 6.4MW solar power project at our Karachi factory has been successfully completed and is now fully operational.
'This initiative aligns with International Steels Limited's long-term sustainability strategy, reinforcing our commitment to energy efficiency, environmental responsibility, and cost optimisation,' read the notice.
Incorporated on 03 September 2007 as a public unlisted company limited, ISL is a subsidiary of International Industries Limited. The company is engaged in the business of manufacturing cold rolled, galvanised and colour-coated steel coils and sheets.

The company added that the successful implementation of the project is expected to contribute to operational savings while reducing the company's carbon footprint.
There has been a growing shift towards alternative energy sources in Pakistan, especially solar, which has become increasingly popular among residential and commercial sectors.
This rising trend has left decision-makers grappling with its implications for the national grid and energy sector, as electricity consumption remains stagnant.
Nonetheless, several projects have been initiated to exploit this relatively cheaper energy source.
In March, Tariq Corporation Limited (TCORP), engaged in the manufacturing of sugar and its by-products, announced plans to set up a 200KW solar power system at its facility.
In February, Olympia Mills Limited announced plans to set up a 500KW off-grid solar power system at its facility.
As per figures presented to the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC), the total installed solar capacity grew from 321MW in 2021 to 4,124MW by December 2024.

Europe's equities ease as US-China trade talks grip markets

FRANKFURT: European shares eased in cautious trade on Monday as investors avoided making big bets pending the outcome of Sino-US trade talks in London. The pan-European STOXX 600 ended slightly lower at 553.24 points, after four straight sessions of gains, its longest consecutive winning streak in three weeks. All other major bourses closed lower. Trading was thin as markets in Switzerland, Denmark and Norway were among those closed due to the Whit Monday holiday. The utilities sector was among the biggest losers. Often tracked as a bond proxy - a slide in Eurozone bonds pressured the index. As a meeting between US and Chinese officials unfolded in London, markets sought any tangible signs of progress that might de-escalate the trade tensions between the world's two largest economies. 'Trade talks can change rapidly, in terms of one minute, you think everything's going fine and the next minute, something else appears and so investors are definitely taking a very cautious approach,' said Daniel Coatsworth, investment analyst at AJ Bell. China said on Friday that it was willing to accelerate the examination and approval of rare earth exports to European Union firms. Automakers – a sector vulnerable to any rare earth supply disruptions – was flat. For the rest of the week, a packed calendar of regional economic indicators includes UK unemployment and GDP figures. In addition, European central bank officials, including board member Isabel Schnabel, are expected to speak. ECB policymaker Peter Kazimir on Monday said the central bank had nearly finished interest rate cuts and should watch data over the coming weeks to determine whether more action was needed.

Iran to submit counter N-proposal to US

Iran said on Monday it will soon present a counter-proposal on a nuclear deal with the United States, after it had described Washington's offer as containing "ambiguities". Tehran and Washington have held five rounds of talks since April to thrash out a new nuclear accord to replace the deal with major powers that US President Donald Trump abandoned during his first term in 2018. Foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei criticised the US proposal as "lacking elements" reflective of the previous rounds of negotiations, without providing further details. "We will soon submit our own proposed plan to the other side through (mediator) Oman once it is finalised," Baqaei told a weekly press briefing. "It is a proposal that is reasonable, logical and balanced, and we strongly recommend that the American side value this opportunity." Also on Monday, Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi told state news agency IRNA that Iran's response "is a framework for agreement". "If we reach an understanding on this framework in principle, further extensive negotiations will begin on its details," he added. Iran currently enriches uranium to 60 percent, far above the 3.67-percent limit set in the 2015 deal and close though still short of the 90 percent needed for a nuclear warhead. Western countries, including the United States, have long accused Iran of seeking to acquire atomic weapons, while Iran insists its nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes. The United Nations nuclear watchdog on Monday began a Board of Governors meeting in Vienna that will last until Friday to discuss Iran's nuclear activities among other topics. "I call upon Iran urgently to cooperate fully and effectively with the International Atomic Energy Agency," said agency chief Rafael Grossi in his opening speech. "Unless and until Iran assists the agency in resolving the outstanding safeguards issues, the agency will not be in a position to provide assurance that Iran's nuclear programme is exclusively peaceful," he added. Britain, France and Germany, the three European countries that are party to the 2015 deal, are currently weighing whether to trigger the sanctions "snapback" mechanism in the accord. The mechanism would reinstate UN sanctions in response to Iranian non-compliance -- an option that expires in October. On Friday, Araghchi warned European powers against backing a draft resolution at the IAEA accusing Tehran of non-compliance, calling it a "strategic mistake". On Monday, Baqaei said Iran has "prepared and formulated a series of steps and measures" if the resolution is passed. "Without a doubt, the response to confrontation will not be more cooperation," he added.

China's exports to Russia fall at quicker pace in May

BEIJING: China's yuan-denominated exports to Russia shrank at a faster pace in May than April, but the decline in imports slowed, Chinese customs data showed on Monday. Outbound shipments to Russia fell 9.6% last month from a year earlier, following a 1.6% decline in April. Imports from Russia fell 9.2% in yuan terms in May, improving from a 14.1% loss in April. The EU announced new sanctions in May against Russia that target some Chinese firms. China opposed strongly the move and lodged a complaint with the EU, urging the bloc to stop applying 'double standards' on economic and trade cooperation with Russia. China's exports likely slowed in May amid trade uncertainties Bloomberg News reported on Friday that US President Donald Trump is holding back from pushing China to halt support for Russia's war machine as he focuses on other issues in the relationship with its biggest geopolitical rival, citing US and European officials familiar with the matter.
