Mclaren should win every race in 2025, says Mercedes' Russell
SHANGHAI, March 20 (Reuters) - Mclaren's 2025 Formula One car should win every race, rival Mercedes driver George Russell said on Thursday, adding that the 2024 champions are further up the road than Red Bull's title winner was in 2023, during which it won all but one race.
"Their car is definitely capable of winning every race, and their car should win every race," the British driver told reporters ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix. "The gap they have on everybody this year is bigger than Red Bull has ever had."
Red Bull's 2023 car was arguably the most dominant in the sport's history, with the RB19 crossing the finishing line first on 21 out of 22 occasions and beating Mercedes to the constructors' championship by a record-breaking 451 points.
Mclaren locked out the front row in qualifying for last weekend's Australian Grand Prix, with Lando Norris nearly four tenths of a second quicker than Red Bull's four-time world champion Max Verstappen in third.
The 25 year-old driver went on to win the race and also set the fastest lap, and the Briton is already established as the title favourite.
Norris is looking for his first hat-trick of wins in China.
"(Mclaren) may struggle when it's cold, but they're clearly better than everyone else at cooling their tyres," Russell said, pointing to Las Vegas, a street track, as one of the "outlier circuits" where the team in papaya "potentially will struggle."
Mclaren's Oscar Piastri shrugged off Russell's remarks.
"George has come up with some funny things in the last couple of weeks," the Australian driver said.
"If he wants to write off his season after the first weekend, then I'll let him do that, but I think we're very aware that Melbourne was an exceptional weekend rather than what we're expecting to be the norm."
Red Bull's Max Verstappen also said he felt his team had work to do if it was to break free from a chasing pack comprising of the Mercedes and Ferrari cars.
"I think the clear picture that you saw was Mclaren was quite far ahead, because I don't think I'm an idiot in the wet," the Dutch driver said, referring to the Melbourne race's tricky conditions.
"I think, in general, (Red Bull) just need to be better as a whole, compared to Mclaren, they're just good everywhere."

Russell aims to take Fife Flyers to new heights
Fife Flyers have named their new coach. He's Canadian Jamie Russell and the instructions from bosses are simple: 'Build a winning team.' The 58-year-old, who has never coached in Britain, has also been told to energise the locker room and take the Kirkcaldy club to new heights. Flyers say the Kamloops-born playcaller has a wealth of coaching experience spread across North American college leagues, the rough-tough East Coast Hockey League and in the Slovak Extraliga. His most recent appointment was in the Alps Hockey League with Rittner Buam who faced off against the Cardiff Devils in the third round group stage of the 2024/25 IIHF Continental Cup. Rittner Buam also won the Italian Supercup Championship last season and Russell said: 'The new ownership group has been outstanding in developing a vision to return the Flyers to a level of pride and excellence. 'Max Birbraer is a legend in the Elite League (EIHL), and his leadership will guide us to new heights.' Russell added: 'We are building a roster that will reflect the values you will find in the community of Kirkcaldy. We will attack games with an unyielding work ethic and passion. 'You will see players that have pride in pulling on the Flyers sweater and we intend to make the Fife Ice Arena one of the most challenging places to play in the league.' The home team will, he declared, be known for its speed, grit and relentless style of hockey. Dozens of Premier League players officially become available for a free transfer on June 30 with plenty set to find new clubs without much trouble as sides search for bargains The released lists have been published, the soon-to-be free agents are searching for new clubs and Premier League sides could find some bargains to fill gaps once July 1 rolls around. And while so much of the focus surrounds the likes of Florian Wirtz's potential arrival at Liverpool in a British record £125m deal or whether Arsenal end up signing Benjamin Sesko or Viktor Gyokeres to finally fulfil the need for a new centre-forward, several familiar names with piles of experience are set to find new destinations. Or maybe they will be able to broker a last-minute deal to remain at their club - such as Thomas Partey and Arsenal. Here is a strong XI of those available without a fee after June 30. Wayne Hennessey - Nottingham Forest Welsh goalkeeper fell out of favour at Nottingham Forest behind Belgium's Matz Sels but there are worse second-choice options. Christian Eriksen - Manchester United Dane wants to keep playing despite mobility issues but his experience would still make him an asset to many dressing rooms. Kevin De Bruyne - Manchester City Premier League legend has made his feelings about departure from the Etihad clear and has no doubt he can continue to be decisive at the very top.
